in fact tonight, just tonight, the detroit news is reporting that trump himself personally called to members of the wayne county board of canvassers, wayne county is detroit, and pressured them not to certify president biden's win in wayne county. a move that would have had huge repercussions according to recordings of november 2020 phone call that were reviewed by the detroit news. quote, trump told monica palmer and william hartman, the two gop wayne county canvassers, they look terrible if they sign the documents after they first voted in opposition and then later in the same meeting voted to approve certification of the counties election results, according to the recordings. quote, we've got to fight for our country, and quote, said trump on the recordings, made with a person who is president for the call with palmer and hartman. we can't let these people take our country away from us. the scary part of this new reporting about trump's pressure campaign is that it worked. later in the recording, according to the detroit news, republican national committee chairwoman ronna daniel,

he then went on to say everybody knows detroit is crooked as hell. newspaper reported what after that call the canvassers refused to come back in to sign the certification. it was ultimately determined their signatures weren't needed in the first place. cnn has not independently listened to the recordings, but we did report at the time that this call between trump and the two canvassers happened, we just didn't know what happened in the conversations. one of those workers named to the detroit news article spoke to reporters a few days after the call. listen. >> i received a call from the president. it was after the meeting. and he thanked me for my service, asked me how i was doing, there was a genuine concern for my safety with what he had heard, the threats that were coming in. >> are you saying the president's call had no influence on you recanting your vote? >> absolutely. >> trump's campaign is now reacting to the report claiming the call was part of his duty as president, not one that you hear any other president saying, let's get straight to c

what do you make of this detroit news reporting? trump's team is saying well, he was just acting in further ince of his duties as president. there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud. what on earth was he doing? >> the allegations that were made in michigan were particularly absurd. allegations, massive vote dumps in the middle of the night, when you look at the results in michigan, trump actually did better in detroit in 2016 than he did, better 2020 the needed 2016. he lost the election in michigan because he did so poorly in the suburbs. but as far as this report from the detroit news, i haven't heard the audiotape. none of us here have heard the audiotape. we are relying on the reporting of the detroit news. we don't know the authenticity, but i can tell you this. it is exactly consistent with how he was behaving throughout that period after the election. this is a replay of the raffensperger tape in georgia. this is a replay of him bringing the michigan state legislators to the white house to pressure them to do their par

i covered what was happening in detroit at the time. i remember there were all sorts of resumes flying around about inaccurate counting, about poll monitors being denied access to witness the vote counting. wayne county, detroit, has always had problems counting its votes. does that mean that there was intentional malfeasance? no. it's human error, as is almost the case always. as we have seen him do, trump will seize on the irregularities, seize on instances of votes being tabulated in a time frame that's longer than usual, and he will say, this is corrupt. we need to be on the lookout for that going into 2024. we know he will do it again. >> susan, this is the first time any of the allegations around 2020's election have involved mcdaniel. i wonder what you make of what you heard her say. is it just legit? she's the head of the rnc. she wants to do everything she can to make sure the election was on the up and up. >> she's trump appointed puppet at the rnc. she has continued to do whatever the former president wants her to do. it will
