the former president is seat ed two rows behind e. jean carroll. going on while they are sitting feet away from one another. at this moment right now, they are playing part of the deposition. as i mentioned earlier, i talked about how either way we were going to be hearing from the president whether it was live or not. now we're getting the portion of the deposition that is being played. in this deposition, i believe the former president is talking about doral and the assets and the excess of money that he has at doral. at one point he says we have an excess of $400 million in cash, which is a lot for a developer. it has grown substantially other than legal fees, we have a lot of cash, great assets. they are owned by the chinese, and he goes on. and i believe this is likely them trying to establish the amount of assets the former president has. they're likely to play also parts of the deposition in which the former president once again defames e. jean carroll. i want to mention one more thing before i throw it back to you, as i'm standing here on t

jean carroll in the witness box .shook his head from side to side suggesting he was saying, no, no. for most of the time he has been whispering to his lawyer and passing notes. mostly, he seems to be focused straight ahead and reacting in real time to things that e. jean carroll is saying to his attorney. what carroll testified to, she talked about what happened afterwards, including text messages, it included facebook messages, tweets, and other communications for people where she said it was information they were saying to her, insults them like she was too ugly to go on living, and physical threats which terrified her. one of these encounters was after she went public, she was in a hotel room in new york, 11:30 at night, no curtain on the window and she decided to go on twitter and saw mean tweets about her calling her a liar. she checked her mailbox and said she saw a death threat. she said that she didn't describe it, she said in her reaction, i read it and i ducked. i thought i was going to get shot and didn't s

that is how e. jean carroll felt. they painted a picture of a woman who was a highly successful opinion columnist who lost her column essentially because of the threats that were made against her, who lost her way to live essentially and to take care of herself financially, painting her as the victim. and then it was alina habba's turn. she made the argument that whatever former president trump did, it did not result in the threats that e. jean carroll faced. that was a reflect of the people that felt as if he had been wronged and they were, in fact, defending him. they talked a lot about the fact that the former president felt as if he was wrong and he had a right to defend himself in the public arena. as we heard from the former president in his very brief testimony yesterday, he felt as if he was defending the presidency. one more thing i want to mention, which was reiterated multiple times, chris, which was the net worth of donald trump. and e. jean carroll's attorneys brought this up multiple times saying and i q

>> so right now, e. jean carroll and the entire case surrounding e.carroll and donald trump, including the payout, this massive historic payout in this defamation and libel suit, is absolutely helping donald trump. but i want to offer a caveat with that. it's helping because it's part of this larger victim narrative. he says the courts are corrupt. look at this massive payout. of course, he's calling into question, as very much donald, trump calling into question e. jean carroll as a person. so all these pieces, this is an attack on. us this is a reflection of a system that is rigged. so that is helping generate a energy amongst his core base. at the same time though, this is the caveat, at the same time, it is also deeply hurting his campaign and the larger institution of the republican party. and let me tell you why, because it's not just this case, it's not just the defamation case, it's also these other cases where trump is going have to pay out millions in damages. e. jean carroll has also said she is willing to sue him again if necessary. so ult

four years of her life, e. jean carroll.what is your conclusion about how long this takes to get this accountability? >> this case has been very long, but for extraordinary reasons, e. jean sudan trump for something that he did first while he was president, for defaming her while he was president. and because of that, he defended the case for many years, basically saying, first to get the department of justice to intervene on his behalf. that didn't work. then he claimed you can't sue me for something i did well i was president. and then he claimed, well, i made the statement statements but i was acting within the scope of my employment. >> official duties to lie and defame this woman who accused me of sexual assault. >> that took a while. it took a detour for d.c. for a while and came back. the other case actually moved extremely quickly. >> to be clear, and people probably know this. the first is, e. jean carroll publishes the book, president defames. >> that's correct. >> she sues him. says i want to go to court and prove

e. jean carroll sued donald trump twice. her original lawsuit, this is the one that started trial today. the reason why it took so long, even though it was filed in november 2019, is because it went through a very tortured appellate process. why? because at the time that donald trump made those defamatory statements about e. jean carroll, he was the then president of the united states. as you might recall, there was a lot of litigation over the idea that the department of justice could substitute itself in for donald trump, thereby basically removing any of his liability, and pretty much stopping e. jean carroll's lawsuit. but the doj eventually withdrew what it called its certification under a federal statute called the westphal act, saying when donald trump made those defamatory statements about e. jean carroll, he did it in his personal capacity. it wasn't like he was furthering any purpose or duty under the united states government as his role as the president of the united states. while carroll won, as it's been called,
