francine lacqua standing by. francine: i am delighted to be joined by the swiss finance minister.hank you so much for joining us. it has been a momentous year for the world economy in switzerland and for baking in general. of course, there is climate change. of course, there are bonds and everything happening with inflation and how do you see 2024 unfolding? >> what worries me is the high debt level around the world. there are many countries that have high debt. when interest rates were down below zero, they did not do the restructuring. they had to do in fact now interest rates are up and i think they will remain even if inflation comes down. there will be a certain level of interest rates and the servicing of debts will be very costly. i think this is an overall risk for financial stability and also for the global economy. francine: do you see that happening in the u.s.? at what point do you think it will become a problem? karin: i think the u.s. has a very high debt level and is the leading economy in the world, but we also witnessed that in the european countries we see that g

francine: it is crisp and cold. -13 celsius, so i let the imagination wonder in how many layers we're wearing right now. this is our first interview at bloomberg house. we're excited for having a great lineup. to kick this off, i'm delighted to be joined by the south african finance minister. he is enoch godongwana. minister, thank you so much for joining us. there is a number of challenges the world is facing. kriti was talking about trade. how difficult will it be for you and south africa to balance your budget? enoch: it is already difficult. at the beginning of the year, we presented a budget in february. first quarter of that budget, we had to revise it downwards because of revenue shortfalls. we're in a tight fiscal space at the moment. both as a result of the global challenges and domestic challenges. francine: what does that mean for taxes? enoch: that's also a challenge. raising taxes in an environment like that becomes difficult. in 2022, we reduced company tax by 1%. is going to be difficult to go back an

francine: are we talking weeks? months? worried that oil companies are divesting onshore asset yeah -- assets? >> -- an opportunity for nigerian companies if it was not done well. for me, it is an opportunity for companies. they have gotten sufficient capacity to be able to not only by these assets but profitably, professionally. francine: this is still a challenge. how do you ensure this does not affect nonproductive assets? >> it is not going to affect us. -- about the commission -- i have told them that we have a global bank in nigeria. they should feel safe wringing their money here. -- bringing their money here. then they go back to sleep. without necessarily jeopardizing businesses. francine: some other pending assets -- exxon, when will we have more of a decision on those assets? >> none of these have been brought to the level of the government. francine: why? >> it is between the companies. they are selling their onshore, a local company. shell is selling assets to the companies. it is a responsibility to bring the

francine: where are the opportunities?e a lot of things coming out of private equity. the amount of capital that has been locked up. it has been two years really that the market has been going through this on rates. i think you will have a bunch of port folios that want to liquefy. also strategic's have their plans. what is amazing especially in the united states is how active and how aggressive strategic's want to be on fulfilling their plans and their five, 10 year desires. francine: regionally, or sectors? ken: sectors. i mean, the energy in the health care sector is stoning. the technology sector continues to create opportunities. during the year we took advantage of a situation and doubled size of our technology team. when silicon valley bank went down, we hired the whole team. when we went to the coverage universe, there were literally hundreds of companies that i probably never heard of that have been created and are sizable and have addressing markets that are very interesting. francine: you have hired 27, right, i

chancellor of the exchequer jeremy hunt speaking to francine lacqua in davos earlier this week. was also speaking to christian lindner, the german finance minister, who defended the ruling coalition's handling of the budget. take a listen. >> there is no government crisis, there is no budget crisis in germany. but in fact to the constitutional court has made for the first time a decision about the debt break of our constitution. this is quite new. switzerland has more experience with their debt break. this is the first decision. we had to decide for the consequences. this ruling of the constitutional court, it was so unexpected, and some princip les have been shifted by the constitutional court. now we have made the necessary decisions. now we are compliant. with the constitution. now we can work further on the turnaround in our fiscal policies. >> we say the government is not in crisis but you can't tell me the three parties are getting along. how would you describe the three parties? >> three very different parties, two left-wing parties, and one more or less centristic, socia
