good morning, garrett. >> good morning to you. a lot of suburbs are growing frustrated with the fallout they're having to deal with thanks to chicago's sanctuary status and due to mayor brandon johnson's crackdown on migrant buses. one example is in this county 60 miles southwest of the city. officials put up the sign along the highway saying no migrant buses and directing the buses to keep heading to chicago. the sheriff there says mayor brandon johnson is creating chaos for the suburbs with his crack doufrn on busing that fines or im pounds buses that don't comply with new rules the city put in place when and where migrants can be dropped off. in response, buses have started dropping off migrants in the suburbs where they then get on trains to come into the city since this is where they say they want to come. at least ten suburbs have taken steps to try to prevent buses from coming to their towns including the village of el burn 50 miles west of chicago. >> when they show up at our station, fine, let's get them on the train. let

our senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake joins us now from the hill.ett, at the beginning of the week, democrats criticized republicans' border proposals calling them cruel. has there been any compromise? >> reporter: talks appear to be making progress. but the idea that the talks could get to a compromise before the end of the year seems farfetched. this small group of senators who have been working on this issue continue to work on it even now. the dhs secretary, alejandro mayorkas has been spotted in the capitol today. the senators have welcomed the involvement of the white house, which they feel like has been a pivotal step in moving closer to a deal, and kyrsten sinema, the former democrat, now independent who's trying to peel off the most amenable members on both sides of the aisle to form a coalition to get this done struck a slightly more conciliatory tone about how she hopes democrats are looking at this question of border policies going forward. here's what she told my colleague julie tsirkin yesterday. >> what's unimaginably cruel are the fo

joining us now, nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. garrett, good morning.zelenskyy's visit going to move the needle at all for him? >> jose, it may be too little too late for zelenskyy's presence here to change anything. his previous visits to the capital capitol were received quite powerfully by lawmakers. at this point the argument here isn't really about ukraine aid. it's about trying to tie it to some kind of enhanced border security measure, and so even lawmakers who are, you know, on the fence or perhaps even leaning no on this broader package aren't really doing so because of anything to do with this situation on the ground in russia. we've heard as much from some of those republican lawmakers late last week. the domestic side of this bigger deal, not the ukraine aid side of it. zelenskyy can raise awareness and he can raise kind of the threshold of people understanding how dire and urgent the need is. but whether that actively leans on, lobby, pressures lawmakers in this circumstance, i think it's unlikely. >> and so meanwhile, and speaking of the d

let's get to nbc's garrett haake on capitol hill.-seat majority here. if the full house takes a vote, where will this go? >> reporter: well, ana, as of right now, it looks like republicans will have the votes to pass this inquiry and get it started formally. but by a very narrow margin. we heard from one house republican, a retiring member, it should be noted, who has come out publicly and said they shouldn't take this step. what i'm watching are a lot of the folks in biden-leaning districts, are they ready to essentially walk the plank on an impeachment inquiry they will argue on the front end is just them authorizing their ability to ask questions. house republicans have said they don't think they're getting all the evidence that they need from the white house, from hunter biden and his attorneys and so forth. they need this backup to go ask better questions. my question to them is, what happens if you don't find anything? would you really be willing to acquit president biden or shut down an impeachment inquiry in a presidential el

garrett. dodi was accused of an april 5th attack in the city's marina district. that x fire commissioner don carman yanni kron four's grant lotus is here in the studio with us now to help us understand what happened in this case. grant ken vicki, since this attack happened back in the spring, garrett od's defense has argued that. >> this was not a senseless attack but self the fence from dodi and today the jury agreed with that argument. you can see from the video here this april 5th altercation between dodi who is a 25 year-old unhoused man and carmen yanni. the 53 year-old former fire commissioner. we'll coming out of there in the black and here he is at a ballgame. dodi used a metal rod in hit carmen it cutting his face open, breaking his jaw, but apparently that doesn't tell the whole story. the san francisco public defender's office provided evidence and testimony that revealed carmen first went after dodi with bear spray and allegedly threatened to stab dodi if he didn't move his belongings as this case continued. other allegations came out accusing carmen

hi, garrett. >> good morning to you.xpects this holiday season to be the second busiest they have ever seen and today is expected to be the busiest at airports. the faa is predicting 49,000 flights today and nearly 44,000 tomorrow. that uptick in flights has a lot of people nervous given what happened last christmas with thousands of flights getting canceled. airlines have taken a lot of steps to keep it from happening again. hiring workers, redoing flight schedules and upgrading equipment. faa has opened military airspace over the holidays to keep air traffic moving. the weather can throw a wrench into travel. so far things like mostly good for today. just a few dozen cancellations. next week, though, they could get more tricky. fox weather is tracking a storm system that could complicate things for folks heading home after christmas and something we'll keep an eye on. >> dana: okay, garrett, keep it calm out there for us. >> bill: keep it smooth. we're relying on you. hemp candy is setting kids to hospitals every month

good morning, garrett. >> good morning. chicago is spending around $40 million a month on the migrant crisis that could go for any number of things across the city. a lot of folks are really upset the mayor continues to say chicago will welcome anyone who wants to come. because the migrants are taking him at his word and they are coming. this month mayor brandon johnson and city council approved tougher penalties for buses if they don't give the city a heads-up if they're coming. if they drop off migrants outside of working hours. that has led to 96 citations so far and at least one bus being impounded. texas started sending buses to the suburbs where migrants make their way into chicago. but now suburbs like aurora are passing their own regulations the try to not get caught up in the fallout of chicago's sanctuary city status. >> aurora is not in the position to be long-term care for anyone coming into this city. i'm the mayor here. my job is to take care and provide for the residents of aurora. >> chicago owes crackdown o
