. >> joining me is cnn global affairs analyst kim dozier and lieutenant general mark hertling.nk you both for being with me. general hertling, i want to start with you because we heard oren lieberman rattle off the group of targets including underground facilities, missile systems, storage sites. it seems like a broad range of targets, 36 of them in 13 different locations. so to what extent do you think, general, that the u.s. and its coalition partners have been effective at degrading houthi capabilities? because it doesn't seem like they've been effective at deterring them. >> yeah, i believe based on the number of targets and the types of weaponry that was used, based on what the -- over-the-counter intelligence is saying is that it was both an air and cruise missile strike, alex. that's going to strike a lot of targets that are conducive to the houthi's continuing to attack the sea-based platforms, the shipping that's going through the area. they talked about the underground targets. when you are discussing any force that lives and fights in the deserts like the houthis do,

thank you very much joining me now is cnn global affairs analyst, kimberly dozier. kim. good morning to you. so you heard there from camila is reporting more than 500 russian targets sanctioned by the us. this is just the start. sounds like a whole lot. but as we've seen over the years, putin has figured out a way to adapt to these sanctions and still do what he wants to do. i mean, do you see this latest round? impacting the war and russia or putin's actions at all >> look if putin had hopes to come back into the international community and be part of the international financial system. this would be bad news for moscow, but it seems that putin's ultimate goal, as he stated before, is to turn back the clock and separate russia from the west and create a new world order that is focused on trade with china, trade with north korea, trade with iran, and trade with india. so yes, initially these various sanctions are going to hurt specifically, they're probably going to hurt his military industrial complex. but russia has already been making steps to find alternatives for mi

with us now cnn global atears correspondent kim dozier and retired u.s. general james spider marks. we know more strikes could be coming. that's what the house said over the weekend. to what end? what would have accomplish, and what is your view on the idea that this is all about deterrence? >> well, first of all, i think we should talk about what we're going to do and go about the business of doing it. this administration has made it perfectly clear it won't stop these operations until the objective is achieved so there's no time horizon. there will be additional operations that will take place. the desire is to get these primarily tehran to understand that the proxies have now received some really crushing blows. they are going to have to reconstitute there. will probably be a period where they have to get their act back together, figure out what they are capable of doing if they intend to continue the operations. in parallel when we see secretary blinken in the middle east again we hope that there could be an advanced effort of a cease-fire in gaza. if that's the case, then i wou

kim, let me start with you. we were just showing this map a few moments ago. significance of this city falling to russian forces? and what might be in store next >> well, the city is pretty much leveled according to reports from there, so they're not gaining much in terms of a town where they can win the hearts and minds. but it will make it easier for them to supply the donbass region according to ukrainian military officials. but the general who's now in charge of ukraine, he was the guy who took so much criticism, were holding onto bakhmut for so long at such great cost in troops lives. and right now he's gone into conservation mode. both of ammunition and of those precious boots on the ground ukraine is talking about bringing in something like half 1 million new soldiers to replace losses and so he's got to lay it carefully, play it more safely. >> and >> that meant giving up a defka and sending a message to the west that their lack of aid is hurting already >> yeah. i mean, jill, is this the moment putin has been waiting for me for so long as we all have
