kris van cleave has more. >> reporter: hot air is causing soda cans to burst after being loaded ontoome southwest airlines flights. the airline confirms it is aware of a series of incidents where the carbonated drinks have ruptured, often while being opened. it has resulted in reports of about 20 injuries to employees this year, typically with cuts to their hands. southwest says while the injury numbers are similar to past years, the issue is getting additional attention now, because it appears to be happening more often. already, the airline has made changes to how it loads cans, typically soda in several cities like austin, dallas, houston and sacramento, including tracking the temperature of cans to make sure they are not too hot. the carrier is also urging employees not to open soda cans that feel unusually warm to the touch or appear to be deformed due to heat exposure. a southwest spokesperson told cbs news the airline is investigating and looking at changes to ensure the safety of its employees and customers amid extreme temperatures and climate change. the airline is also tes

kris van cleave is tracking the global impact. he is live in phoenix. we heard from our reporter in san francisco and they're getting a little bit back on track here. flights are starting to resume. how is it where you are? >> reporter: well here is what i am hearing from airlines. you have a few of the nation's carriers who seem to be unaffected. alaska has major operation at sfo and southwest has a big presence in oakland, they both say their operations are going fairly normally. united does have planes back in the air. they are gradually getting back to operations. think of this as a crawl, walk, run approach for the airlines that have been impacted. we are talking about most of the big airlines. united, american, delta in particular. one was saying part of the issue is it's not like this is an automated fix that gets pushed to everybody like your car may do an over the air event. they're basically rebooting and rebooting hoping to catch the update hoping that the system fixes itself. then that system goes back online. this is complicating the back o
