or berry and kris van cleave got exclusive access to show us how those inspections are being done. >> we are on board an alaska airlines boeing 737 max 9 outside of their seattle maintenance facility awaiting an inspection of its door panels. this is our first up close look at those panels and four bolts holding them in place now at the center of the investigation. >> it is a 12 hour process to inspect a door panel. you have to remove two rows of seats plus all of the cabin interior to get to the door panel. you have to adjust the four key bolts that hold this in place but then there is also 20 pages of measurements that have to happen before that plug can be deemed safe and the airplane put back into service. >> i would personally fly next to the door plug and put my kids there myself. >> jason life oversees alaska's engineering team, working around the clock. >> you are checking all of the hardware to make sure they are in safe and make sure the hardware is tight. we have found some loose balls and we need to document those. >> how common is that during your inspection? >> more comm

cbs senior transportation and national correspondent kris van cleave has the latest from portland international. >> reporter: the alaska 737 is behind me at a hanger. you can see the plane with a piece missing. when the plug door blew out. the ntsb said it did so with so much force that it ripped open the locked, fortified cockpit door some 26 rows away. a passenger had the shirt literally ripped off their back. we are also learning that this was not the first sign of potential problems with this airplane. this plane was just weeks old and it was delivered at the end of october. in the month leading up to this incident last friday, palace on three separate occasions received a warning light about the potential pressurization problem on the airplane. the day before this flight took off, that happened. alaska took the action to restrict where the a plane could fly saying they did not want to risk it flying over water for an extended period of time, so they restricted it to mainland flying. not going to hawaii. one question is, if they were going to restrict it one of ground the airplane. alaska h

kris van cleave has the very latest on the investigation from portland. >> reporter: these boeing 737 max 9 jetliners aren't leaving the ground. the faa ordered 171 of the planes pulled from service forcing hundreds of cancellations for alaska airlines and united monday while investigators try to determine what caused a door panel to blown out during an alaska airlines flight friday night. >> alaska, declare emergency. back to portland. >> reporter: it happened at about 16,000 feet shortly after taking off from portland, leaving a gaping hole in the aircraft. the force was so great it pulled off a passenger's shirt and pulled off a cockpit door. >> a loud boom like a mini explosion, happened abruptly. >> reporter: the so-called plug door was recovered in a schoolteacher's backyard. the panel is put in place of an optional emergency exit on some 737s. >> when they install it, it's really not something that becomes an inspection item from the inside of the airplane. you really cannot even tell there is anything different about that location. >> reporter: investigators will spend another

kris van cleave joins us from portland international airport. good morning.the latest information on the investigation? what's been the i am pa account for flyers? we have delays at sfo. >> reporter: two u.s. airlines fly 737 max 9. that's alaska and united. both have big operations at sfo. that's part of why you are seeing the cancellations. we expect hundreds of cancellations today and that will continue as long as planes are grounded. the plane in question, focus of the investigation is behind me at this hangar just off the airport in portland. you see the section of the plane that is missing. investigators will be back out here in the next hours and will continue pouring over that airplane, particularly the area where the plug door failed. they'll also be examining the plug door now that it's been found. what we have learned, when that blew out, it did so with so much force, it blew open the locked fortified cockpit door even though the cockpit door was 26 rows away from where the hole opened up. that's how strong that depressurization experience was. it

our cbs national transportation correspondent joins us, kris van cleave.latest and what's the impact for flyers? >> reporter: good to be with you. two airlines fly 737 max 9, united and alaska. both are big operations at sfo. that's why you see so many cancellations there. between the two, we expect hundreds of cancellations with all their max 9s grounded, about 171 airplanes. you can see the plane where the ntsb is focusing its investigation and the piece that is missing. that plug door that blew out is a 63-pound piece of the airplane. it's about 48 inches tall, two feet wide. it is a substantial piece of airplane, not quite as big as a cabin door but pretty big. at this point, we are learning a lot of details about what happened. when that blew out, it did so with so much force, it ripped open the locked fortified cockpit door 26 rows away. it sucked the head set off the first officer's head, ripped a shirt literally off the back of one of the passengers. we know that phones and personal items were sucked out of the airplane. fortunately, only reports o
