macy's business has been under pressure.riday's close before this news came out, their shares were down about 16% year to date. you're facing competition from online upstarts and you have amazon and schein and the brans that have long sold at macy's are pursuing their own drive to consumer models and they're competing with the brands, and why would they go to macy's when they can go to coach, calvin klein or the retailer. what the value is here is what will be interesting. >> okay. so what is the value proposition for someone who would want to take over somewhat struggling laggard operation like macy's at least indicated by the stock price? >> absolutely. so it's important to point out here that this is two investment firms that are interested in buying and our capital management and arkhouse seems to be the one leading and they're interested in the boxes that they have and that seems to be the case with macy's. so j.p. morgan put out a note and macy's real estate is valued at 8.5 billion and their market cap on friday was a

but wait -- what do you think macy's should do? >> look, i think that this is part of the overall retail complex, that you can make an argument post-pandemic, to a degree, is undervalued. we have laid out near term, we think holiday is on solid footing. i think you have a return to normalized demand trends, but as you look at macy's, i mean, before today's announcement, i mean, it was trading at 40% below the multiple that it was trading at from 2017 to 2019. so, this implied deal is actually 3.8 times -- that is nearly the pre-pandemic multiple. if you look at what it was trading at from 2017 three 2019, call it roughly five times, that is a $30 stock. so, as i look at the different components in terms of real estate, digital, and the nameplates, but then more so, i think here, you have evaluation disconnect, and they are not alone. there are other companies that we cover, more on the global brand side, that i think are undervalued in this backdrop. >> i guess the natural follow- up, and i mean disrespectfully, would be, yeah, but

share prices of macy's and cigna . let's start with the macy's story.ou now have a suitor interested and an investment deal possibly coming together. we'll see what happens. shares are up more than 20% on that news. and then cigna, we have been watching that one closely as well. we thought there might be this pursuit of humana. they are backing away from that. investors like the news because it comes with the plan to focus on stock buybacks. a very busy developing day on the deal front. sonali: we will discuss this more with our bloomberg guest who has been following both stories. let's start with macy's. art-house. is an interesting activist investor. what it does their pursuit of macy's say about the market? >> is not the first time someone has made an approach to macy's, it happens many times. we have also seen a bunch of retail bankruptcy filings coming in and restructurings. it's a tough business. for anyone to come in especially around a time where bed, bath & beyond had just gone through bankruptcy, it is interesting timing. and arkhouse has a ba
