this is surveillance footage of the first burglary at grand jewelry repair near oakland's lake merritt, happened thursday morning around 3:45 a.m. two vehicles and five burglars, the store owner's son christopher tran saying they used this van and rope to drag open the metal gate. once inside they used the same rope to try to drag a large safe out. >> but it snapped. they took a heavy metal chain, put that over the safe. >> reporter: the safe was so heavy it took them a while to secure and tie it to the back of the van. >> the safe, they couldn't quite get it into the utility truck. so it was dragging. so you see a bunch of sparks. as they get on the freeway, pd was right behind them. so i think that's why they kind of dropped it because it's heavy. it was weighing down the car. >> reporter: the burglars took off and left behind the safe in the middle of the road. police recovered the safe which contained thousands of dollars in jewelry and watches. the jewelry repair shop also experienced significant damage when the burglars dragged the safe through the store. the owner, mr. tran, was

lake merritt is turning red. racing concerned about algae bloom. they are trying to figure out just what kind of algae is causing this red tide. they are not always harmful but a similar one killed thousands of fish a few years ago. this was august 2022. the lg bloom spread from merits all the way to san francisco bay releasing toxins that took oxygen out of the water and killed everything from fish to clams. >>> put up or we will not pay you. business owners say they are frustrated with criminals threatening their safety and driving customers away. the owner of one restaurant is spearheading an effort to boycott city businesses until oakland provides winning full protection. mr. ortiz has had his business robbed twice in the past year and other businesses have similar stories. he says it is time for the businesses to take a stand and say no to taxes until oakland gets consisted police patrols and response times. >> we are not saying we won't pay the taxes. we say we will defer the taxes until you give us the protection that we deserve. the city is
