amna: miles o'brien. there was a lot of talk about clouds or cloud cover potentially obstructing some of the view and the big show even where you are, but how did it actually turn out? tell us about what you saw. miles: all morning long, here we were with thousands of young people enjoying an awesome field trip, and it was kind of grim. we were thinking at least we have the excitement of them being here to get dark. and then we had a patch and it was just at the right place and at the right time. it was a thrill. i think the fact that we didn't know if we were going to see it kind of them have the whole enjoyment. it was fabulous. amna: depending on where people were, because people traveled all over the country to see this, who do you think had the best view? miles: the weather got better as it went to the northeast and we did have touch and go clouds. i have seen in eclipse in 2017 on a perfectly clear day. part of what i realized today is the company you keep as you watch it. being here in this stadium

cnn's aerospace analysts, miles o'brien joins us now. miles great to have you with us. let's just start with the basics for everyone. what happens during a total solar eclipse? >> well, jessica, we're taking advantage of a coincidence that we don't know of any other planet and moon combination has, which is the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun. and yet the sun is 400 times the distance away. so that cancels each other out. and so from where we sit on the surface of earth they appear to be the same diameter. now, the moon is on a tilton orbit, so this doesn't happen every month, whatever there's a new moon. but on occasion, relatively frequently, we get this occurrence where the moon passes right in front of the sun eclipsing the sun and many times this happens over the oceans, so we don't know about it in this case, what makes it extraordinary is it's just going to rip across a huge population center, which is to say north america, from mexico's with the continental united states exiting newfoundland, probably 30 to 40 million people just living under the so-calle

i want to bring in cnn analyst miles o'brien right now. as you know, he's a veteran of covering space and aviation is over the cotton bowl stadium in dallas, texas where he watch the eclipse you're in the path of totality to the eclipse. >> miles. you watched it from that historic location, the cotton boll. what was the most memorable part? of this experience >> what do you, it's funny, kristen mentioned somebody getting married right next to a camera that i set up on the center of the 50 yard line right at the cotton bowl logo. >> a >> man proposed to his now fiance. she did say yes so it's interesting, i was talking to neil degrasse tyson the other day and he said it's very it's worthwhile noting what happens to animals, to the animal kingdom during an eclipse, all kinds of weird things happen. but he said perhaps the most unusual things or the human beings and watching human behavior that eclipse is an extraordinary thing. what if we were here with thousands of young people and the energy was just palpable. it was an amazing experience.
