joining us now, nbc news correspondent, morgan chesky.california's extreme heat and the dry conditions, that's got to be complicating efforts. are residents following the evacuation orders? >>> alex, great point there, i asked that very question to one of the sheriffs in charge of these evacuations that have grown by the day in northern california where this park fire is burning. and he pointed to an event that took place six years ago that infamous campfire near the town of paradise which left more than 80 people killed and destroyed about wildfires, alex, but the sheriff told me it was that fire in particular that changed the game. everyone started to take the evacuation orders more seriously. authorities for their part became more organized, with evacuation zones in that dry, rural area where this fire is currently burning. and that is why they point to the fact that as large as this fire is, no reports of any injuries or deaths. people have heeded the evacuation calls as now more than 2,000 firefighters have tried to position themselv

nbc's morgan chesky is following this story for us. families saying and do they have the power to stop this deal from going through? >> reporter: yeah, chris that is a good question. we know they have filed an objection to this case, to the federal judge overseeing it. they're doing whatever they can to get the plea deal thrown out. whether they have the power to do so, it's come down to the objection that's been filed. keep in mind they've already called this publicly a sweetheart deal here. they have had staunch opposition to this throughout years of its legal proceedings, and even though it was announced late last night, families already coming out and sharing their thoughts through their attorneys. i want you to hear what one attorney has to say on behalf of the victims' families that were killed in the fatal 737 max crashes. take a listen. >> victim families feel like boeing is getting off easy. 346 people died in those two crashes. therefore, a plea of manslaughter would be more fitting. >> reporter: so the big question is, now t

morgan chesky is live in los angeles for us. how far have these flames spread? >> yeah, chris, it has been a frightening scene here. the park fire has become a historic one because it's almost doubled in size every day since it started last week after authorities say a man pushed a flaming car down into a ravine. what went from that one ravine is now more than 350,000 acres, chris, prompting thousands of people to evacuate and burning at least 130 structures there in that surrounding area. it's now gone from butte county into three surrounded counties there. it's 12% contained, which is far better than the 0% containment we saw on friday, but still a long ago for these fire crews. more than 2,000 firefighters were actually on the lines of this fire, doing their best in very remote areas to cut fire lines, to slow down its spread. they have had an incredibly tough obstacle with cditions here. triple digit temperatures combined with such dry fuel have led these flames to just tear across some remote hillsides in that area. we do know that one of the things that's

joining us now morgan chesky in chico, california, morgan, what is the situation like there this morning grown so rapidly, in fact, doubling in size over the last 24 hours after initially starting wednesday afternoon after authorities say ronny dean stout ii pushed a flaming car into a ravine. he has since been taken into custody. he is awaiting arson charges. there's no word as to why he was motivated to do that, but hard to believe that that one flaming vehicle now the result of more than 150,000 acres that have burned here just north of chico. cal fire crews getting ready to go back to the front lines. we know that there have been hundreds of firefighters cycling in and out of this blaze trying to keep it relatively contained, but the containment just 3% at this hour, and that is absolutely concerning. another concern, ana, is the fact that we have triple digit temperatures that are forecast here through the next several days, and that is why there is not going to be much relief from that standpoint. fire crews have been cutting fire lines by hand or with bulldozers, doing whatever th
