we want to start with that deadly avalanche at palisades tahoe. this happened along one of the most famous ski runs in the country, famous and yet very difficult. if you're a long-time skier, you know the deal. kt 22 is for experts. the victim this morning 66-year-old kenneth kidd from marin county. >> we're not sure. >> you can hear them saying three reported missing, one down there, two over here. and the wind whipping. this is shortly after the avalanche. this happened around 9:30 this morning. and you can see dozens of rescue crews swarming the area. in this video, other skiers actually joining the rescuers, desperately trying to dig people out of the snow. they did manage to save three people. here is a look at where it happened now. this is a map of palisadeds tahoe. it's a big mountain, along with alpine too. this is the gs bowl right here along that famed kt 22 lift. that lift just opened today for the first time this season. the size of this avalanche about the size of one and a half football fields and ten feet deep. palisades tahoe says

but over a foot and a half of snow at palisades tahoe. it's not just the fact it's snow. it's the type of snow that it is. the temperatures up there have been running very close to freezing even as that snow has been falling, which means snow is containing a lot of water. the snow is falling and the denser, the heavier the snow will be. it's not just snow falling, but heavy snow and accumulating on the downwind side of the mountains because of those gusty winds, which have been substantial. right now 40 miles an hour gusts at south lake tahoe. indicating similar speeds. 35 to 40 miles an hour gusts and a widespread basis. some of the peaks of 8,000 feet indicating gusts over 90 miles an hour. so all the weather factors, darren, coming into play to produce such a tragic scenario. but just the terrain itself. this is one of those spots that we worry about for the kind of threat. >> this is probably one of the best known spots in the sierra for skiers, kt-22. i want to show you the picture. if you don't know it well, it's pretty intense when it comes to this particular peak.
