we want to start with that deadly avalanche at palisades tahoe. this happened along one of the most famous ski runs in the country, famous and yet very difficult. if you're a long-time skier, you know the deal. kt 22 is for experts. the victim this morning 66-year-old kenneth kidd from marin county. >> we're not sure. >> you can hear them saying three reported missing, one down there, two over here. and the wind whipping. this is shortly after the avalanche. this happened around 9:30 this morning. and you can see dozens of rescue crews swarming the area. in this video, other skiers actually joining the rescuers, desperately trying to dig people out of the snow. they did manage to save three people. here is a look at where it happened now. this is a map of palisadeds tahoe. it's a big mountain, along with alpine too. this is the gs bowl right here along that famed kt 22 lift. that lift just opened today for the first time this season. the size of this avalanche about the size of one and a half football fields and ten feet deep. palisades tahoe says

the last major one at palisades tahoe happened in march of 2018. a wall of snow buried five people, including a bay area couple, near the olympic lady chairlift. now, everyone did survive there. the last deadly avalanche happened at the alpine meadows resort in january of 2020. one skier was killed, another seriously injured. the deadliest avalanche in state history also took place at alpine on march 31st, 1982. seven people were killed when snow buried dozens of skiers and staff. most avalanche deaths happen in the back country, according to the website ski california, 5% of all avalanche fatalities in the u.s. since 2010 have involved guests skiing or snowboarding, in-bounds. our team has been on top of these updates as new information comes in. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is in lake tahoe this morning and we'll have more coverage throughout the day for updates as they happen. be sure that you have the abc seven bay area app and also be sure to turn on those notifications. there this morning. >> it's not clear when the boeing 737 max nine a

but over a foot and a half of snow at palisades tahoe. it's not just the fact it's snow. it's the type of snow that it is. the temperatures up there have been running very close to freezing even as that snow has been falling, which means snow is containing a lot of water. the snow is falling and the denser, the heavier the snow will be. it's not just snow falling, but heavy snow and accumulating on the downwind side of the mountains because of those gusty winds, which have been substantial. right now 40 miles an hour gusts at south lake tahoe. indicating similar speeds. 35 to 40 miles an hour gusts and a widespread basis. some of the peaks of 8,000 feet indicating gusts over 90 miles an hour. so all the weather factors, darren, coming into play to produce such a tragic scenario. but just the terrain itself. this is one of those spots that we worry about for the kind of threat. >> this is probably one of the best known spots in the sierra for skiers, kt-22. i want to show you the picture. if you don't know it well, it's pretty intense when it comes to this particular peak.

now take a look at palisades tahoe where it is. let's talk about what possible factors may have contributed. so the sierra snowpack right now in the central sierra is 38% of average. you've got multiple layers here. typically you have a bed layer a weak layer and a slab layer. now with the snowpack not very built up, any precipitation on top of that wind temperature changes can really impact it. so let's take a look at the factors. those are the factors. and humans can trigger an avalanche. as snowboarders and skiers go down the slopes. at the time there were powerful wind gusts nearby about 100 plus miles an hour. one thing to consider is safety. wearing perhaps an avalanche beacon, especially as we're getting more and more snow up in the mountains. at the time of the accident, it was light snow. as you look at the radar taking you back in time, but it was gusty and the snow has been picking up steadily tonight. winter storm warning until 1 a.m. tomorrow. up to 18in for the peaks with those gusty winds. snow level dropping to 2500

palisades averages 400 inches per year during the winter season. and just last year, our sierra snowpack was over 140% around this time. right now we're seeing that snowpack at less than 40% but we have additional snowfall expected into the weekend as well. and there is actively a winter storm warning. this is going to remain in effect for the areas through 1:00 a.m. that means for anybody planning to travel tonight, the conditions are not safe and it is a friday into saturday. of and we're monitoring a snowstorm that can bring dangerous conditions and rainfall locally. i will talk about the dip in the temperatures here in the bay area and the return of king tides in a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> the rain is good news if you are heading in and out of the east bay for the holiday weekend. caltrans canceled that scheduled closure of 680. caltrans says the rain is putting a wrench in their plans. southbound lanes were set to be closed between the 580 interchange and cooperate man road. caltrans is looking to reschedule the roadwork during president

one company owns both palisades and alpine. most recent deadly avalanche at alpine was in january of 2020. the man died and another was seriously injured. ski resort faced 2 lawsuits in connection to that incident. but they have since been settled. the deadliest in recorded history was in march of 1982, the avalanche there killed 7 people at alpine bury. the resort's parking lot destroyed structures. the resort was close because of heavy snow that day. but up to 13 employees and people vacationing where they're at the resort anyway in harm's way. >> our team coverage of the avalanche continues tonight. kron four's lawrence karnow here with the very latest conditions in tahoe, lawrence. it was still snowing at last check with sarah. yeah, still snowing out there right now, though it's beginning to taper off a bit. but there's more snow to come in as pushing further south and well going to be a whole lot more snow. i think as we head in toward the weekend, of course, avalanche is at ski resorts, very rare, usually are talking abo

the investigation into the deadly avalanche in palisades tahoe continues, as you said, and the resortto assess all of the terrain before they can open up safely. look at the conditions here at palisades tahoe this morning where the gondola between the resort and alpine meadows is the only lift running. the kt-22 lift where the avalanche happened is now closed indefinitely. this is video from yesterday's rescue. the avalanche triggering just a half hour after the kt-22 lift opened for the very first time this season. the avalanche was about the size of a football field and ten feet deep. it swallowed up four skiers. three of them survived, but 66-year-old kenneth kidd who split his time between marin and truckee did not. you see fellow skiers jumping into action while 100 ski patrol and fire made their way to the avalanche field. >> we talked to a skier who was on the lift overhead. >> instantly they had patrol there, i think they have a regular protocol they use. they had their patrol guys from here and they instantly got the folks from over in alpine, got them in here. >> palisades f

a deadly avalanche at palisades tahoe. to tell you about the rush to save those caught up in today's slide. and the avalanche risk was considerable in the area. welcome everyone to the for this afternoon. i'm heather holmes and i'm alex savage. >> four people were caught in that avalanche that happened shortly after palisades opened this morning. and this afternoon . authorities say one person was killed. the avalanche happened on a black diamond run under the ct 22 lift, right as snow and strong winds were moving into the tahoe area. you see the conditions here in this video. more than 100 palisades crew members carried out a search today. the olympic valley fire department also responded today, along with the placer county sheriff's office and the debris field on this avalanche spanned 150ft wide, and it was 450ft long. one man was found dead during that search. his name has not been released, but he was a guest at palisades. another person suffered minor injuries and two other people caught in the slide managed to escap
