paul heggen is tracking the evening rain. where is it right now?>> it is pushing further to the east. following that up, there is some gusty winds that are trying to get some coast. the map just updated and erased some gusty conditions but you can see outlines in the background where the strongest winds are. along the coast, that will push its way further and further inland as we head to the rest of this evening. you are making your way out and about on the wet roads. the first batch of it pushing further and further inland through the santa cruz mountains and across the peninsula into the santa clara valley. another band of rain is about to hit the coast. these waves of rain are not going to continue through the evening. it will be a wet, sloppy commute with some breaks in between. they don't last very long. the roads don't get a chance to dry out before the next band of rain moves in. later tonight, we see more and more of a break in between those showers and they become even fewer and far between. by early afternoon, we should be largely drying

. >>> for a check on when the next round of rain is coming, let's go to paul heggen, hi, paul. >> hi, it is further down-the-line. getting into a drier stretch of weather as the showers that have been dotting the radar this afternoon transitioned to lingering mist and drizzle that barely shows up on the radar loop here. let's reset things, going back 12 hours for when the widespread rain is going across the bay area. as that moved out we have been generally damp across the entire region throughout the day. things should dry out heading through the rest of tonight. let's take a look at how much rain we managed to accumulate. it was evenly distributed. just short of half an inch of rain in san jose, just a third of an inch from morgan hill. 6/10th of an inch from fremont. lesser amounts inland in the east bay, around a quarter of an inch of rainfall. exactly half an inch of rainfall for oakland and just over that for downtown san francisco and the north bay, the amounts variable, again, in the quarter of an inch to half an inch. a quarter of an inch for napa, closer to half an inch arou

first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen is tracking the temperatures and another chance of rain. that sunset is a gift at the end of the week. >> temperatures today were well above average for early january, we had abundant sunshine throughout the day and things are going to shift as we head into the weekend, a cold front is going to sweep across the bay area tomorrow, as it moves through, not only is it going to bring cool and breezy conditions but also a chance of rain. the first showers aren't going to move in until over 12 hours from now, we will start with the north bay, santa rosa, your rain chance is going to peek by the morning. it is not going to mount to much more than 3/10 of an inch of rain. the time is going to be a little bit later for san francisco, things are moving from his -- north to south. then for the south bay and santa clara valley, a little bit later, 3:00 in the afternoon . but the showers should be moving out as the sun goes down tomorrow evening. the second half of the weekend looks dry but still cool, we will take a look at how long the cool weather wi

let's go to paul heggen with more on this. >> yes. generally wet day around the bay area.t raining all of the time everywhere. but the rain continues just after midnight for all of the areas shaded in red. total snowfall accumulation will be 1-2 feet. a lot of that is already on the ground. another 4-8 inches looks likely over the next six hours or so. gusty winds, gusts over 60 miles an hour making travel that much more complicated on u.s. 50 and on i-80, once again, travel is strongly discouraged in that direction as we head through the rest of tonight until the road crews have a chance to catch up. bay area complicated by the rain coming down. zooming in for a closer look at where the heavier downpours are adding up at the moment. we are seeing showers that are heavier. around redwood city and across the bay coming at a good clip along 580 at the moment. showers through the try valley, heavier rain. around the santa clara valley, dry in the valley. the rain coming down at a good clip there as well. it will wind down, north to south. left over showers for the north bay h

heggen joining us now. visibility might be an issue this week. >> yes. we, of course, have a big eye on saturday's game and what the weather will be like. >> things are looking a bit damp saturday. i think that's the day of the weekend where we have the lightest shower activity, just a wet stretch of weather settling in. short term we're concerned about fog spilling in from the central valley through the delta into the inland valleys of the east bay and trying to make its way into some of the inland valleys of the north bay. the only county in the bay area under this dense fog advisory is solano county. i think there will be impacts on the morning commute for the valleys in the north bay and east bay to begin the day tuesday. later in the day tuesday we'll be tracking the arrival of our next rainmaker, which is going to be fairly brief, shouldn't have too much impact. i think the bulk of it arrives after the tuesday rush hour, but it's going to be another quarter inch to half inch of rainfall. the dry break

first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen joins us with a look at what to expect for the rest of the week. hopefully we get a little bit of a break, paul? >> for the most part, we'll get that needed break from the widespread rain chances at least as we head through the next several days. but it was a wet start to the day. a look at the radar loop going past the 12 hours or so. this will reset as we get towards the end of it at 5:05 in the evening. we will look back to 12 hours when the heaviest rain was falling. that marched across the region during the morning commute. made a mess. but then we were down to lingering on and off showers and patches of mist and drizzle, showing up during the afternoon. even that is going to dry up as we head through the rest of the evening and tonight. how much rain did we add up? let's take a look at the numbers on our map. for a change, we did not have that rain shadow effect because of the trajectory that's moving in from the northwest. traveling along the bay, close to half an inch of rain for san jose. not much or above a quarter inch of rainfall.

first alert meteorologist paul heggen is tracking that next round of rain headed our way. >> a couple back-to-back systems bringing us rain systems for today and off and on during the day tomorrow. let's add up the rain that accumulated today and the amounts were pretty modest, but mill valley added up almost 2/3 of an inch of total rainfall, about a 1/4 inch for downtown san francisco, 0.2 for santa cruz and barely more than a trace of san jose. the system ran out of steam as it moved farther south. tomorrow looks like it has a better chance to bring more evenly distributed rainfall to the bay area. you see the showers fading off once we get to midafternoon and we've seen clearing skies since then which means chilly temperatures tomorrow. rain chances ramp back up. it won't be as organized, so more of a scatter shot pattern, better than a 50/50 chance of rain into the afternoon and around this time wednesday with evening, the amounts not overly impressive, but enough to put puddles on the road. that means you'll probably have a slow commute both in the morning and evening. we'll look

let's get to paul heggen in our virtual view studio, paul it is just the start of a series of storms, right? >> yes. this one is falling on the ground that is capable of absorbing the rain that we are going to see. it is the others. this is just enough to make a mess of the afternoon and evening commute. the first wave of widespread rain pushing deeper into the bay area. a closer look with the north bay, moderate to heavy rainfall over much of sonoma county inlewding santa rosa as we speak and napa county, the rain is about to intensify around napa. panning farther to the south heavier downpours along the western facing hills and plenty more of the heavier rain off shore. some of the heaviest rain is falling farther down to the peninsula. higher elevations but climbing down in elevation and towards redwood city and that is going to cross the bay and move into the east bay over the next 30 to 45 minutes or so. the rain climbed over the santa cruz mountains and did survive that trip. we see the rain. let's zoom out and put everything in motion, you can see this band of rain with plenty

paul heggen will let us know when that rain will arrive. >>> clouds are moving in over the last couple of hours. just a leading edge of the system that is an atmospheric river associated with the pineapple express pattern. you can see the moisture on future cast headed toward the west coast. and that moisture will be directed at the bay area as we go through the day. rain chances will go up quickly. splash and dash hours for the morning but the heaviest rain hitting the coast by morning and continuing through the afternoon and well into the evening. 1 to 2 inches on a widespread basis and some two or three inches. more than that in the high elevations of the coastal ranges of sonoma and marin county's. a flood watch is in effect from 4:00 tomorrow through 4:00 friday morning. even though the heaviest rain will wrap up by sunrise on thursday. plus there is a trickle-down effect of rain making its way through the watersheds potentially resulting in stream and river flooding. watch out for standing water. there is also a wind advisory in effect. it is a high wind warning. anticipating 35

let's go to chief meteorologist paul heggen. a good amount of powder out there? >> yes, they are seeing more snow through the rest of the weekend into the weekend especially. let's take a look at the big picture and satellite radar. and to bring us the rain and the sierra, the snow is moving out. the snow showers over the past couple of hours coming to a halt. the last of the rain showers winding down as well. there is one little narrow stripe of showers trying to make their way through the foothills of the santa cruz mountains from the east side. that's the very last of the moisture. we are still going to have a high surf advisory. let's add up how much rain that we did accumulate out of this latest system. generally falling within the range of what we expected about half an inch of rain on the widespread basis. some of the lowest amounts. .3 inches of rain, half an inch for san jose and a little under for antioch and for concord. san francisco only added up a third of an inch of rain. one of the lower totals. the highest amounts, worth further to the north wher

paul heggen is tracking where the heaviest rain is falling right now. >> the heaviest downpours are over the north bay at the moment but there is plenty of rain across the entire bay area this evening, the heaviest rain about one hour ago but we still have oakley heavy downpours. let's zoom in for a closer look at the north bay, sonoma and napa county getting the heaviest rain, especially in the higher elevations along the border between sonoma and napa county. there's more rain falling on the east side, san pablo bay, a little bit of a break in the action but still moderate shower activity that will continue making its way through. the rain continues for the east bay, into the oakland hills and parts of the tri-valley and a little break in the action in san jose, but more rain making its way to the santa cruz mountains and towards the peninsula as well. we are not done, we are certainly not done with the pattern overall, it is going to last for the next several days. the futurecast shows the shower activity gradually becoming a bit more scattered for the rest of this evening but it does

chief meteorologist paul heggen has a closer look at the conditions that led to the avalanche. paul? >> reporter: yeah, julie, it is not just the amount of snow, but a number of factors that go into any scenario like this and everything has to come together exactly wrong for such a tragedy to occur. some of the main ingredients, it's fresh snowfall. not just snowfall, but the type of snow. we'll get into that in just a moment. strong winds as well, gusting over 40 miles per hour in the sierra and some places up to 90 miles per hour. you have layers of snow and ice that that new snow is falling onto. the snow that has melted and then refroze, it's not as grabby, which will make it more likely to slide off and lead to an avalanche. and theine the factor of human activity where the kt-22 area, disturbing the new snow has been really kind of just adding the trigger that it was necessary to get everything started in the first place. it's the storm system that's bringing showers to the bay area. those will continue to move through. we'll track those momentarily. but the snow that wil

chief meteorologist paul heggen for a closer look at the conditions that led to this deadly avalanche. it is always amazing to me how fast these avalanches can happen and just how powerful they are, paul? >> how quickly they start and how fast they accelerate downhill. a number of factors that will play into a scenario like this and what made it likely and to occur. so let's start with kind of the overview of those factors in why this happened in the first place. well, you need heavy snowfall on the steep slope. the most obvious ingredient. but you also need strong winds to help pile up even more snow, especially on the downwind side of any mountain range. you need layers of snow and ice. darren will talk more about that momentarily and human activity. this is the first time that kt-22 area was open, so numerous. skiers trying to take advantage of the expert slopes. just some of the factors that play into this. it's the same storm system that will continue to dutch copious amounts of snow. let's zoom in and take a look at the snow that will continue to fly right now just all along the

let's check in with chief meteorologist paul heggen. it was cold last night. it was cold this morning. >> you could see the frost on the car windows. >> we did manage to warm up to pretty much normal high temperatures. at least it didn't stay cold all day. let's look at some of the numbers from the morning, below average, but not record setting or even close. 32 degrees in santa rosa, 1 degree above freezing in concord and a few degrees above freezing, not just san jose, but along the coast. half moon bay got down to 35 degrees degrees. san francisco temperatures bottomed out in the mid-40s. we'll see mostly 40s on the map by early tomorrow morning. we'll have more cloud cover rolling in. showers tape take us up to our north. the chance of rain will drop north to south across the bay area. it's going to be light activity and should be wrapping up even in the santa clara valley by early afternoon, first of the few rain chances we have in the seven-day forecast. i'll outline it all in the full forecast in a few minutes. >>> california is experiencing a disturbin

. >>> we do have to send it over to paul heggen with a look at the weather.l has been talking about more rain in the forecast heading our way and the time of all of it. >> not exactly convenient for the morning commute, but some extra time on the road, allow some extra stopping distance. let's look at the rain. moving into the north bay. we mentioned this earlier, it looks really impressive on the first alert doppler. a lot of this moisture elevated in the atmosphere, not falling all the way to the ground level. the total rainfall in the north bay has generally been less than a 10th of an inch but eventually there will be more substantial moisture. let's take a look at the future cast more widespread rain making its way and as we head towards the peak of rush hour tomorrow morning, so the timing can be a lot better and the good news is, this isn't going to be the heavy sustained rain that we had sunday night into early monday morning. and it's going to be pretty short-lived. it will get out of here by mid-to-late morning, we don't entirely dry out. still a fe

let's check in with chief meteorologist paul heggen. >> the next round will move in about 12 hours from now, so back-to-back systems giving us a decent chance of mostly light rainfall accumulation. let's look how much we managed to add up today. the outlier on the high end, mill valley, 2/3 of an inch, everybody else a quarter inch or less, exactly a quarter inch for san francisco. barely more than a trace of rainfall in san jose. you've got another chance through the day tomorrow. let's look at the first alert doppler loop over the past six hours. you can see the last of those showers moving out this afternoon, pretty light activity becoming lighter and eventually fading away. it won't be as organized tomorrow. instead of one band of rain, it's going to be waves of rainfall that will be light to moderate, not any heavy downpours, but a day that it's hard to plan anything outdoors because we'll see intermittent rain chances throughout the morning into the afternoon and the rain is going to be picking up. we'll look at futurecast in a few minutes. >>> let's talk about travel in the sierr

heggen. everyone wants to know the saturday game forecast. it's only monday. >> we'll keep you updated. right now the best guess is showers transitioning to maybe steadier rain by the second half and end of the game. there's a lot of time for that to change. it's just generally a wet forecast looming. here's a beautiful look outside now. we saw plenty of sunshine on this holiday, the last rays of monday's daylight fading from the horizon. we are going to see changes through the next 24 hours. locally dense fog will develop tonight, especially in the inland valleys in the north and east bay, some of that spilling in from the delta. really dense fog will be through the central valley. rain moves in tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening and early overnight. then we dry out wednesday and thursday before a longer stretch of wet weather begins on friday and continues saturday including the playoff game in santa clara and sunday and again monday. we'll track all that. let's talk about the first b

let's get over to chief meteorologist paul heggen, tracking when the first showers will arrive. >> the first sprinkles will hit the ground this evening and overnight, but the bulk of the rain is going to fall during the day on saturday. in the north bay, we are focusing on santa rosa as a representative, it is going to be a wet day overall, widespread light to moderate rain will give way to a band of heavy rainfall by the early evening. around san francisco and oakland, the rain chance is going to be a little bit lower for the bulk of the day. the band of heavy rain will be the main event and that drops down towards the central bay about mid evening and it'll take even longer to make its way to the south bay and santa clara valley. the further south you go, the intermittent showers aren't going to be as much of a factor during the daylight hours on saturday, the heavy rain will impact you as well. let's take a look at the range of possibilities, we have all the official forecast numbers highlighted on the map, but for a few communities, i want to highlight the range. in san jose, expec

first alert meteorologist paul heggen tracking several storms headed our way. it was nice to have a little break, paul. >> beautiful weather to start the new year and this year starting off different than last year. last year in january we had the parade of atmospheric rivers. we'll have several rain chances the next several days, the first arriving tomorrow, some of the heaviest rain coming down around rush hour tomorrow afternoon and evening. this is not going to be a repeat of the same scenario starting 2023. we'll have a few dry days in between before the next chance of showers arrives friday, especially into saturday. let's talk about the first chance of rain. generally a half inch to an inch, want to focus on a few communities and talk about the low end of what's possible with this system and the high end. san jose is expecting a half inch, maybe close to an inch in the santa clara valley if we hit the jackpot. we don't, maybe less than a quarter inch. the east bay generally a half to three-quarters of an inch is the expectation. concord, the possibility

as paul heggen has been promising. >> that is right. it is going to move through tomorrow. late in the day. the first showers hitting the ground north bay early afternoon. this will be a quick moving system. it will be replaced by dry weather for a couple of days, wednesday, thursday, then, things will shift on a longer term basis, getting into a wet pattern by the end of the workweek and the weekend. let's talk about the first chance of rain heading our way. clouds, a fair amount of fog starting the day, tuesday, the east bay, the north bay, future cast showing showers running through the north bay already through sunrise. a lot of the moisture will evaporate on the way down. there might be a little splash and dash heading through the afternoon. future cast shows more activity developing by late afternoon. the bulk of the heaviest rain should hold off until after the evening commute is over. just barely. if it speeds up by an hour or so there will be an impact. the heaviest downpours do not last more than thrive-40 minutes in any spot. moving quickly. it will be soggy out

let's send it over to paul heggen with a check on the current conditions. >> we expected the evening commute to bms and mother nature has delivered on that, on the first alert doppler, with the latest band of heavy rain making its way around the coast. the rain is about to taper off over downtown san francisco. the band of heavy rain is about to cross the bay over towards oakland and san leandro, there is more rain that extends down to the peninsula. same thing for sonoma and napa county, plenty of heavy rainfall over marin county as well. that activity will continue pushing further to the east, the spots that are rain free for the moment, parts of the tri-valley, fremont, the rain will return in short order, the rain is climbing over the santa cruz mountains and making its way into the santa clara valley. there's more rain offshore, not quite as intense as this band moving through right now but it's still enough to keep the roads wet for the evening, there is plenty more rain in the forecast tomorrow and sunday, and monday. we will track that coming up. >>> richmond was once dubbed

let's get to our chief meteorologist paul heggen with more. >>> still a couple sprinkles out there. the bulk of the activity is quiets down now that the sun has been down for two hours, we will get a 36 hour stretch of dry weather ahead of us to let the rain soak in for a couple of days. let's take a look at how much the rain added up to. the santa clara valley, you overachieved. san jose, an inch and a half of rain, you picked up 2 inches of rainfall. over 2 inches for livermore, east bay it went community to community basis, half an inch in concord but 1 1/2 inches in walnut creek. san francisco picked up an inch and a half of rainfall approaching 2 inches of rain over the past two days and the heaviestiest amounts as expected were the golden gate. santa rosa picked up 3.5 inches of rain total since the first wave of showers moved in on friday. so, all of this, really, helped put a dent in the deficit that we have been running in here for the water here. a couple spots, santa rosa, running a slight surplus that is average to the 22nd day of january. we have another chance of showe
