paul: the russell is up 1% so that's been a nice story in the last seven or eight weeks, the broadeningt eight months, it was this magnificent seven that was driving everything but now the equal weighted s&p 500, you get a better 12% return. market technicians tell me that's a good thing to have in this market. she writes stuff over the weekend. if you pay attention to the bloomberg terminal, you see some good content talking about the markets. what are you looking at? >> you did mention the russell 2000 so we are looking at small caps because it's up around 1%. if you look back to late october when we saw the russell up for the last six weeks, it's up more than 20% since then. when you look at the russell 2000 relative to the s&p 500 over the past three years, it's still on pace for his worst three-year stretch since the late 1990's. but it's been a hard-hit corner of the market. the small-cap stocks have been kind of mediocre. paul: i've done small caps for 30 years but it's always been tough to make money. >> also, the way the index and the russell 2000 and the percentage for particu

paul: tom has been a solid bull. let's look at the small caps. robert peter. the performance we have had in equities and the bond market since the end of october feels, to some, maybe me, that the market has gotten a little ahead of itself here. maybe pulling some 2024 performance into the last quarter of 23. what do you think? robert: we are on the edge of having come too far. we have pulled a lot of next year's potential performance gains into this year. when you look over the last two years, just regaining close to the highs on the s&p. not a lot has changed. we still have rights higher than what they were previously. from a multiple perspective and an earnings perspective we have not made a lot of progress over those two you -- years but rates are a bit higher. the path ahead looks solid in inflation continuing to come down, rights coming down. there could be more room to go. i think we will have a lighter year next year on the basis of how quickly we moved the past two months. that has been on the basis of the f

, whether the spw equal weighted s&p or the russell 2000. last nine weeks. is there more room to grow do you think? callie: this is one of the most encouraging parts of the move as we have seen so many stocks participate in a rally that was unloved at the beginning. thinking if we did bottom and october 2022, then most of the ride up has been carried by bigger large-cap stocks and tech stocks. it is not a problem. that is usually how bull market start but you want to see more participation some thinking about the fed and thinking about how the market is factoring in great cuts next year there could be disappointment especially because the move we have seen and more cyclically sensitive stocks has been strong. we are not sure the economy is fine yet even though things look at right now. caroline: i mean there is great analysis, so-called bad breadth and these euphoric stocks that have led us higher even though they have not been beating as much of the second half of the year, but if we are going to go broader and looking, i mean people are as
