i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. affordable homes go up in flames and intense eight alarm fire has destroyed an affordable housing project that was under construction. and you can see it for miles. all the smoke. this fire started around 10:00 this morning. and as of this hour, the building is still smoldering and crews will be on scene for the next 24 hours to watch for any hot spots. the construction site is located right on middlefield road. this is a big artery in redwood city. it's right next to the caltrain tracks. flames quickly engulfed this 179 unit building. you see multiple stories there, and air quality advisory has also been issued due to the heavy smoke with winds expected to push the smoke it already did down into san jose, across the peninsula and into the south bay wind also blew embers around the surrounding neighborhood here, and many were told to evacuate immediately. they said that they were going to move to the safe zone, one more block down that way. but i told them i'm not leaving because this

hey raj and audrey. yeah. so state legislators just did some significant housekeeping in the state's lodging laws. two new consumer protection laws are going to kick in july. first for bookings made starting july first. and that's why you might want to pause. let's take a look at them. the first one requires hotels and vacation rentals to do something that we have been calling for. for a long time to disclose all fees up front. that means no more surprise resort amenity, cleaning junk, whatever fees that just jack up the price. now, hotel and vacation rentals can still advertise room rates without tax, but all required fees must be part of the price you see up front. also prices on room service menus must include service fees up front. and there's good reason for hotels to comply. the hotel association warned members that if they don't comply, they face government fines, up to $10,000 per violation. okay, the second new law mirrors airline law and it gives you the option to cancel a hotel or vacation rental bo

thanks, raj. thanks, scott. now a fire tore through an apartment complex in pittsburgh just this morning with a father and daughter trapped inside. the flames broke out around 8 a.m. here. cell phone video showing smoke pour out of the complex, while flames grew inside contra costa. firefighters say the fire started on the first floor. then when crews arrived, they found two unconscious people on the second floor. neighbors told us the two were a father and a daughter. rescuers carry the young woman downstairs and helped the man out of a window and down a ladder. first responders performed cpr on the daughter, who they were able to get her pulse back. the fire department says both right now are in critical condition. we trained for this and there's no doubt that it can it can be intense when you get here, but the training helps you work through it. the crews work well together and we have a good response from this area. so we had crews on scene quickly and everyone knew their job. contra costa county fire says i

i'm raj mathai. we are near lake sonoma. those retardant bombers now a common sight in the skies over wine country today. this fire started yesterday afternoon. quickly growing to about 1200 acres. you can see some of the aerial fight here. the good news is, this isn't spreading very much. that's the silver lining. cal fire though attacking this from the air and on the ground. containment has grown just a little bit to 20. now, just a few minutes ago, cal fire confirmed at least two homes have been destroyed. video shows some of the structures on fire. our sky ranger spotted some of the burned out buildings. now evacuation orders are still in effect in dry creek valley. here's a map here. dry creek valley is dotted with some private vineyards, ranches, and farms. the county says 240 people have been told to leave, with another 400 people under evacuation warnings, though some people have decided just to defy all of those orders and stay and protect their homes. one man says he watched two homes burn from his own front yard.

i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. a lot of concern and frustration in richmond after three people were killed. excuse me. two people were killed in less than ten hours. the gunfire started yesterday near the iron triangle for people in. all were shot. two of them died. hours later, a separate shooting. here's nbc's christy smith. well, my work has called me. david rodriguez was alerted by his workers yesterday as gunfire rang out near the intersection of seventh and pennsylvania avenue in richmond's iron triangle neighborhood. he'd have to go to other place, but he cannot leave because they close the street and they both end. rodriguez was not there, but his truck was, he says. it was hit twice by bullets. very quiet area, but the thing is, that incident, you know, it happened. richmond police say one person died at the scene. three other victims arrived at a hospital where one more person was pronounced dead. published reports suggest one of those killed was a pregnant woman, but police have not confirmed that claim.

i'm audrey asistio and i'm raj mathai. happening right now oakland city council members are meeting and discussing how to balance that nearly $200 million deficit. they've been meeting for hours. the tough decisions come as council weighs two options, including one that calls for cutting $63 million. nbc bay area's velena jones is at city hall with the latest. reporter council member called here a packed city council meeting as council members look to balance the budget. oakland is facing a budget deficit. we are needing to address a structural deficit that's years in the making. council member trevor reed argues as the coliseum deal is still being finalized, the mayor's original budget should have never factored in that revenue. it is june 28th, and that is still an option that, regrettably, is still before us to consider. does not honor the integrity and transparency that our workforce, nor our community members deserve. council now has a couple of options. the first includes the mayor's original budget with amendments.
