notice the heavy pockets over santa cruz.highway 17, be extremely cautious tomorrow. it does look like some of those rain totals ramp up. then it kind of seems to stall out over a large portion of the south bay, primarily over the santa cruz mountains, morgan hill. notice in rain-shadowed san jose, that's because the santa cruz mountains are taking the majority of the rain. but even san francisco, we have heavier pockets through santa rosa is. this is at about 9:00 a.m., a bit of a bull's-eye over the santa cruz mountains. we have to be careful through there because, even though there are no flood advisories in effect, the outlook reveals some of the streams and rivers will be rapid rising. they'll be on alert. here are the rain totals we can expect. this is on top of the 2 inches we've already seen for the north bay. could see an additional 2 inches through santa cruz mountains, maybe even higher, 2.5 inches. notice the south bay, we're talking anywhere from a quarter to a half inch. not much in the way of sierra snow, unfor

what are you seeing on santa cruz right now? >> yeah, we're seeing significant coastal impacts up and down our coastline from the city of santa cruz. that have their mean beach in westcliffe areas and closed to our capital. total asplen odd area is in being impacted by ways and then our real delmar beach drive area and up toss are also being impacted as well. how unusual is it to see high surf at this level at this time of year? >> well, unfortunately, seems to be now. this is the second time this january 5th. earlier this year, we had. >> the significant wave impacts. this is very similar or slightly less impactful but still quite impactful as your visuals are showing the around some of these we're seeing this more the alignment of very high tides and very big surf how many people are affected by these warnings at this time. how many homes are at risk? >> right now between the unincorporated and incorporated areas that are in a warning we've probably got about. >> 3 to 400 homes. many of those homes in our rio delmar and beach

kyl the capitola wharf is badly damaged from high surf over in santa cruz most of the wharf came back open friday after suffering extensive damage from monster waves. but the sandbar in capitola won't be ale to reopen as quickly. the floors was lifted by thursday's crushing waves. >> the waves have been the problem. the waves come in, and they end right on the edge here. soon as they hit the edge, shoot upwards and shoot the floor upwards. so -- going to keep happening. it's just hopefully we'll not see something like we saw last january. >> reporter: after last january, the sandbar and surrounding restaurants underwent significant and costly repairs. friday marks the second time in a year he is replacing the restaurant's floor boards. >> put the floor in twice is tough. what are you going to do? >> reporter: working quickly to reopen he's unsure what damage will results from saturday morning's high tide. >> the swell is not supposed to be nearly as big as on the day of the damage but there will be high tides. so i would be silly to not be concerned, but i'm going to, my friends are l

over the santa cruz mountains at the moment. put everything in motion the past couple hours and you can see the movement, southwest to northeast. a little gap from the most widespread rain, but off and on showers are possible at any point the next several days. futurecast shows the off and on nature of the activity tonight and early tomorrow. that's typical of what we'll see throughout the day tomorrow. there will be pockets of rain, locally heavy downpours and more widespread rain in the forecast tomorrow night into early wednesday morning. here's how much rain has added up so far, just over a half inch of rain total from san jose since yesterday, about two-third inch at morgan hill, under an inch in los gatos. in the east bay over a half inch of rain, oakland more than 1 inch, not that much for downtown san francisco, it's been an inch since the rain first moved in. in the higher elevations around san rafael you've added up more with over an inch of rain accumulating thus far in santa rosa. one more check of first alert dopple

the highest amounts anticipated are in the santa cruz mountains.in and clouds, temperatures were well above average. the cool spot in santa rosa made it to 60 degrees and up to the upper 60s in livermore. temperatures later tonight aren't going to fall a lot. we'll end up mostly in the 50s by early tuesday morning. it's the combination of the blanket of clouds holding warmth near ground level and the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. forecast highs tomorrow, about 6 or 7 degrees above normal on a widespread basis into the middle portion of the 60s in the santa clara valley and inland in the east bay, low to mid-60s around the south end of the bay and down the peninsula, along 60 degrees along the coast and a few degrees warmer in san francisco. temperatures inland in the north bay might be a little cooler, struggling up to around 60 degrees, but average highs are in the upper 50s and everybody should at least reach that level tomorrow afternoon. quick check of the seven-day forecast and we are going to see temperatures running pretty steady as

south bay from san jose to the santa cruz mountains. it is steady rain, but more areas are now under urban and small stream flood advisories as we are experiencing flooding, minor roadway flooding and will continue to see it in these areas shaded in green as the rainfall continues to fall. as rain continues to fall. it's a level three on our storm impact scale. a strong storm. we do have a number of warnings to pass along coastal flood warning until 2 p.m. tomorrow. as the wave heights and the high tides combined to bring significant flooding at the coast. high surf warning until 2 p.m. breakers 28 to 33ft. isolate up to 40ft. dangerous swimming and surfing. stay out of the waters right now. gusts to 30 on diablo and also ben lomond wind advisory until 7 p.m. tonight. gusts could reach as high as 60 miles an hour. it's a level three through tonight. strong storm, heavy rain, strong winds, gusty winds at times. rough surf, thunder chance, flooding on the roadways and along the coast. i'll be back with the timeline coming right up. >> oka

but take a look at a live picture right now from our santa cruz camera. it is so mesmerizing to want to go closer, but stay out of the water and never turn your back to the ocean, off the rocks, off the jetties. because the wave heights are still up there. earlier point sur had a wave height of about 28ft. the heights have come down, but still rough and dangerous. 17 footers right now. bodega bay that high surf warning until 3 a.m. tomorrow. large breakers 28 to 33ft, up to 40ft for favored areas. and that means dangerous swimming, surfing and still a risk of rip currents as we go. hour by hour, those wave heights will slowly come down as we're seeing. and by tomorrow at 6 a.m, they have come down considerably. but it is still not completely subsiding. we have a storm that's a level two that is coming in tomorrow. you can see it's already getting wound up. that's what's bringing us the rough surf as well. it's a level two, as i mentioned for tomorrow. rain heavy at times, strong winds and rough surf. still with us. a slight possible of thunder. i'll be ba

big waves triggered a high surf advisory for motion beach to santa cruz. people came out to see the force of the ocean on full display. first responders urged people to be aware of the dangerous conditions. >> that force can break over the rocks, over the sidewalks, and come into areas that it usually doesn't. we have seen an increase in people coming down to the waterfront and we are trying to remind them to never turn your back on the waves and watch out for rogue waves, sneaker waves that can come in sideways and remove very, very quickly and knock you down, requiring a rescue. >> it did cause damage in pacifica, pete crews are fixing the seawall. capitol is underway again. oceanfront restaurants over the last few days. nbc bay area's marianne bobrow has a look at what businesses are doing to try to reopen as quick as possible. >>> here at the sandbar, the storm caused significant damage to their flooring, but they were able to work quickly today to make repairs and reopen tonight. >> the sound of repairs, following the sound. 15 foot waves pummeled bea

it's right off lead road near the main entrance of uc santa cruz. according to officials that bus with the university bus that continuously through the campus, carry students and faculty to where they need to go. it was heading downhill along college road when it did not make that quick curve to the left, ended up going off the road, taking up that fence and hitting this old rock structure at the time. it was carrying a total 6 passengers that 5 who were riding the bus. and then that driver that driver did have to be taken to the hospital by helicopter and the other passengers also were taken to a hospital. again, ranging from severe to moderate injuries. the crash remains under investigation this morning. back out live. you can see that need to fix this fence. and police actually jusa came over near to us telling us that they're not only going to fix that fence are still trying to get an update on what condition of those are that are in the hospitals. as we get more information, we'll keep you updated live this morning in santa michael thomas send

right now we've got rain moving through san jose, notice santa cruz, we just had a decent amount of rain push through san francisco. this is going to continue pretty much through the 10:00 hour. we'll catch a break and then we did see another band pick up in the model that did show some heavier rain at around 1:00. i want to show you, this is the last 24 hours. this is sunday's rain. it doesn't include the rain we're seeing now or the rain we're going to see in the upcoming days. but notice on sunday we did get a couple hundredths of an inch, some of the heavier pockets were in santa rosa. keep in mind, this wasn't the main band of the rain and we are expecting to see some heavier rain and higher rain totals in the next couple of days. coming up in a few minutes, wind south, 15 to 30 miles per hour, especially higher elevation areas. the second storm is expected to move in tuesday into wednesday, so you definitely want to keep an eye out for that. i hope you got a chance to check your tires and also those very important windshield wipers. i know it's been a weekend split by sunshine and

santa cruz county shared this video of the coast this morning. you can see water rushing at rio del mar. we have a crew in santa cruz now. they'll be live for us in the next half hour. we were in pacific earlier on mornings on two. our crew saw waves as large as 30 to 40ft. in some places. a pair of crab fishers went to pacifica this morning and realized they'd better turn around. >> i came to grab fish, but apparently that's not going to happen because the pier's closed. because the waves are just outrageous. we're going to pack up and eat the bait and go home. >> the high surf attracted plenty of serious surfers looking to hit the waves, but authorities are warning to use extreme caution near the ocean and are recommending people stay away from piers and other coast side locations. >> well, as we've been telling you, the rain has moved through the bay area, but as roberta gonzalez just told us, we have more rain headed our way in the next day or so. the umbrellas were definitely out last night and lots and lots of puddles out there on the stree
