sharon chin has more . >> this is a great one. we introduced you to gary maxwell 14 years ago. since then, the program he started has transformed how california fights food insecurity. their mac >> families received free fruits and vegetables from food banks all over calvin he thinks to a program that gary maxworthy began. he started working at a food bank after spending three decades in the food distribution business. >> my first wife passed away. i thought, now, what am i going to do? >> he introduced a novel idea. instead of feeding animals or throwing out produce that wasn't marketable because of shape, size, or overproduction, gary reached out to distributors to donate the fruit and vegetables to food banks. >> you just have to take that off. you have perfectly edible corn. >> gary started the program , from to family in 1998. today, it has tripled in size. >> it generated more than 250 pounds of fresh produce for 7 million kelvins in need. the vegetables and fruits account for more than half of the food that second harvest gives away in san mateo and santa clara counties.

sharon set up of the fundraiser that is very close to her heart because sharon's daughter megan was diagnosed with leukemia at age 23. in october of last year megan passed away. that is when the community and students took action to rally around the family. the students made bracelets, they went to the night the light event put on by the charity and helped fundraisers all in honor of megan. today they cheered as they learned because of those efforts they raised more than $28,000. >> it reaffirms your belief in the goodness of people with so much negativity going on in the world. it really has given me hope for the future. >> where does all that money go? >> it will help fund research to find cures for leukemia and other types of blood cancer as well. on top of those $28,000 raised by the students, megan's former soccer club in morgan hill also raised another $21,000. those are numbers that even surprised representatives from the charity. >> these kids are raising more money than some corporate executives do and if anything just seeing their investment in their community and their investment t
