it is for the south bay. and this is because temperatures will be above average by about 10 to 15 degrees in spots. it will be a warm, if not hot afternoon away from the coast. so today inland, lots of sunshine. look at these temperatures up to about 100 degrees later on this afternoon around the bay shoreline. we do have cloud cover this morning, but we see sunshine a lot faster compared to yesterday. i think most of us underneath the clouds see that sun around 9 a.m. this morning. upper 70s, lower 80s for daytime highs along the coast. it's brighter than yesterday. it's actually a very nice day along the coast. partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid 60s. so today in our microclimates starting in the south bay heat advisory in effect 80s and 90s here 85 cupertino but 98 in morgan hill. we'll hit about 85 in milpitas up along the peninsula, 87 in redwood city, 79 in san mateo, partly cloudy along the coast, 62 for half moon bay across san francisco. we'll get that sunshine closer to about 10 a.m. this morni

pride fills the streets in the south bay.housands gathered in downtown san jose for yesterday's silicon valley pride parade. the weather couldn't have been better. all sorts of organizations and community groups took part. that included a big turnout from the folks here at nbc bay area and telemundo 48. while walking the route, we caught up with san jose mayor matt mahan, who agreed it was an all around great day. pride today in downtown san jose celebrating the values of inclusion and just empowerment for our entire community. san jose is a beautifully diverse city and we're so happy to be out here just celebrating everybody for who they are and rocking a feather boa. san jose first held a pride parade back in 1977, and in 2014 the name was changed to silicon valley pride to include nearby cities. it is now the largest pride celebration in the south bay. well trending this morning, we know chris hemsworth is used to handling a big hammer, but how does he do with a pair of drumsticks? he's been on stage playing with us for th

we also did some upper 80s for the north bay, santa rosa, currently at 89, also for the south bay, mid 80s for morgan hill up into the city, san jose 82 degrees. it's breezy and we're in those upper 60s for san francisco as we go on into the morning. hours are typical summer pattern. we go through and begin with a morning with what we call fog mist mixing fog and august there together. and as we go on into the middle part of the day, we peel it back to the coast. so you know what we do in the summertime here in the bay area. we leave the house with a light jacket and then just completely put it aside into the afternoon. and here is a prime example of that. first day of school for the cotati-rohnert park school district. up there we start the morning with some patchy fog. just remember, the drivers out there really pay attention to the roads and the change in visibility as the kids return to school into the afternoon. look at those temperatures slightly warmer into the upper 80s. lots of sunshine. so that sweater will be at the bottom of the backpack as you pick the kids up from school

in the south bay. we have learned the identity of a san jose community service officer who was killed on the job. the santa clara medical examiner is confirming 34 year-old long pham family lost his life and he was struck by an alleged drunk driver on saturday night. he was conducting a traffic stop with another cso in the area of palm avenue and monterey road in south san jose when they were both hit. ppolice are saying that people in the area say drivers treat this roadway like a freeway. if someone is paying attention on their iphone if they're drunk because i drive by one day and it looks fine. >> and you drive by the next day and naral, the war, you know, remnants from an accident. >> the other community service officer was taken to the hospital with major injuries. she is expected to survive. police did arrest the driver that allegedly hit them for driving under the influence for expecting an update on the story. by 4 o'clock this afternoon. in a statement, san jose mayor matt mahan is saying the

looking at our highs for the south bay will be in the mid 80s. once again. even some upper 80s for gilroy and then as we move over toward the east bay, temperatures will range from mid 70s in oakland to low 80s for martinez to upper 80s from concord to pleasanton, 87 there today and 78 degrees in redwood city, half moon bay in the mid 60s. and in san francisco, we're in the low 70s for downtown, while in the outer sunset, upper 60s and low 80s for napa, as well as novato. but then we're in the upper 80s from santa rosa on up to clear lake. so looking ahead, we've been talking a lot about this chance of showers coming in late on friday into saturday, and it looks like for areas just to our north, there will be some wet weather coming in, while the bay area will have a chance of some spotty showers, mainly early saturday morning and then looking ahead to some hotter temperatures. unfortunately, that little taste of fall only lasts a day or two. and then we're back to the high heat with the inland areas close to 100 degrees for the middle of next week. i know w

biotech company genentech is now laying off nearly 100 employees at its south bay or south san francisco headquarters. a notice filed with the employment development department says these layoffs will be effective. october 8th. it doesn't specify which jobs will be cut. but this is the second round of layoffs for genentech this year following a reduction of more than 400 jobs back in april. in the south bay, the santa clara county board of supervisors officially voted to move forward with its plans to buy regional medical center. the county announced last week that 175 million dollar deal to buy the facility and restore full service to that trauma center. supporters of the idea we're calling on the board to make it happen. >> already having cuts in our community, we cannot wait months. we cannot wait for a long process. we need hca in the county of santa clara to move swiftly and ensure our lives are protected. >> the board of supervisors will be holding a public hearing and then making a final decision on the sale on september 24th. if all goes well, the county could take over the hospi

the south bay.n a car struck a man around nine last night. this is near automation parkway and hostetter road. police have now reopened all of the westbound lanes of hostetter road and the driver is cooperating with investigators. firefighters are still trying to determine what caused an early morning fire that heavily damaged an empty building in oakland. the first calls went out a little after 1 a.m. the oakland fire department posted this video from dennison and cotton streets near interstate 880. this is the same building where a buttercup cafe recently shut down. firefighters say no one was injured. well, police in oakland are investigating a shooting that left one person dead near the parker community resource center. it happened last night around seven on naeher avenue. now, officers say multiple people arrived at local hospitals on their own. no word this morning on their conditions in response to crime crisis in the city. oakland mayor sheng thao will host a town hall tonight to let residen

and that does include the south bay. now, i'm going to be honest with you. think the east bay east bay should be in. this is well today. technically it is not. but i am telling you it is going to be very warm in spots today. you can tell that by the fact that we've had such sunshine so early in the day and you see that here in downtown san francisco and you'll also see what's happening here on the map as we're expected to get up to about 99 degrees in antioch. 98 in livermore. so once again, we're seeing well above average temperatures 80's around parts of the bay and even san francisco looking out for 70 degrees today. so it's going to be a warm one. so just make sure you're taking good care and making plans to be out of the side and out of the heat when that kind of middle of the day between about 1 o'clock and 4 o'clock occurs. so let's talk temperatures for the next couple of days. this will be our last hot day tomorrow. we'll start to see things rolled out for those inland folks. and we continue on that trajectory as we get towards the weekend. in fact,

in the south bay. an arson investigation is underway now in san jose after this garbage fire spread to nearby grass. this was on east taylor street near watson park. in fact, it was our own jack moment who was in the area working on a story when he saw a man set a pile of garbage on fire. he called 9-1-1. fire crews came out, had it extinguished in about 10 minutes. san jose police say the investigation into the cause. the arson investigation is now being handled by san jose's fire department. >> and san jose mayor matt mahan is looking at maybe ideas from other california cities on how to deal with homelessness. yeah, this as he's facing pressure to clean up growing encampments kron four's jacmel but has the story. >> soon the city of san jose's unhoused population could be cycling through something like this tent sites row by row. it's just 4 walls. but san jose mayor matt mahan says it may be their best bet to finding permanent housing for the unsheltered. we are now looking to experiment with that
