this is today in the bay. good friday morning i'm chris camera sitting in for laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. a lot to get to this morning. but first setting sail i want to give you a live look this morning over in san francisco. this is where sailgp competition will soon get underway. our cinthia pimentel. she's going to be joining us live in about 15 minutes with live interviews and a look at those conditions sailors will be facing. first, let's start with a look at the forecast. how hot is it going to be, kari. still very hot. and i don't know if you'll be able to tell the difference between 105 and 103, but it will be a little bit cooler today in some spots. this is where we've had the relief all throughout the heat wave this week. and you can see the fog rolling across the bay and the very tips of the top of the golden gate bridge there. it's going to be nice and cool in the city. and also that marine layer stretches over toward oakland, where we are going to see temperatures going from mid 60s at

that includes a lot of our hills from the north to bay the east bay and coming down into the south bay. now, when we look at the relative humidity, the fire danger, as well as the wind, we are starting out with some high humidity. and this is a look at our relative humidity and percentage. the color contours show you the fire danger and it will be moderate for today for the inland east bay parts of the north bay. but then look at tomorrow. that increases as our temperatures go up and the relative humidity may be as low as 5% in parts of the bay area. so if you get any kind of sparks in those conditions, fires can spread very quickly. it's going to be warming up today, ranging from the 70s near the coast to the highs over 100 degrees. but we'll talk about even hotter heat coming our way for the next few days. mike you are seeing that the commute seems slower this morning. yeah, not so much heat on the traffic sensors, but we're looking over here toward the bay bridge, where we do finally have it filled in all the way back past the end of the parking lot. took a while. just happened over

bay today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she is live for us this morning. okay, so ginger, a lot of folks are saying that things really could have been a lot worse. in that case, but i guess everyone's okay. fortunately, everyone is okay. everything is much better than it could have been. marcus and kris firefighters got to work quickly and they were able to keep things under control. but it does show you just how fast things can change, especially under our current conditions. now, talking about that professional fireworks show, it started in san jose around 920 at lake cunningham park. people were enjoying the show, but then just a few minutes in, their attention turned to a small brush fire on the hill. crews got that out quickly, but then more flames popped up in a few other spots. council member domingo candelas was there at the show and says they were prepared with firefighters standing by. that's why we do these events with the firefighters on hand so they can be able to respond to, to, you know, small little fires, l

, 90s for the north bay and share valley, 70s and 80s around the bay with 90s down the peninsula and still 60s right along the coast. even with the hot weather lingering tomorrow we're unlikely to set records, especially in san francisco and oakland, way off record territory. even farther inland we'll be a good 5 to 10 degrees below the daily records for the 12th of july. let's look at the seven-day forecast. we'll start with inland parts of the bay area where temperatures are going to retreat closer to normal territory by sunday, right around 90 degrees which means a mix of upper 80s and low 90s. yeah, it's warm to hot in some spots, but normally hot for mid-july. temperatures around the bay will cool off a little bit faster, influence of the onshore breeze. bayside temperatures back to the 70s by saturday and lower half of the 70s sunday through the middle of next week. along the coast while you have seen more sunshine today, you'll see more sunshine again tomorrow and then the fog with low cloud cover will be back in abundance as we head through next week with temperatures hoverin

the north bay and along the bay shore. but that does have that cooling effect for us. suppressing temperatures and keeping today, the coolest of the forecast as we move into tomorrow and thursday, we trade in that cool coastal breeze for this high-pressure ridges, southwesterly, wind pushing on in from the south and west on into the bay area. and with that comes a spike in temperatures, especially come thursday. that's why so much of us still do have these heat advisories. go back into effect on wednesday and last through 08:00pm on friday for almost all of the bay area except for the immediate coastline. excessive heat warnings for much of the rest of the state. a sign that we get a break from the heat today in the bay area. but much of the rest of the california still in the midst of this gripping heat 60's to 70's for san francisco today, 60's at the coast. these are some of our cooler spots but not so bad along the bay shore. definitely warm but a lot more comfortable. 80's in san carlos as well as palo alto and san jo

the bay towards the bay bridge. there is a spare the air alert in effect today and tomorrow for high levels of ozone in the air. air quality managers are asking people to help out our air quality by driving less. in developing news now, a wicked wildfire in butte county has forced thousands of people to evacuate, and it is destroyed homes and injured firefighters. it's called the thompson fire. and governor newsom has declared a state of emergency. that fire is burning near oroville. fire teams from san francisco, san jose and the entire bay area are helping out on the fire lines. abc7 news reporter j.r stone joins us now and j.r. the state says it is using every available tool to tackle this fire. that is how serious it is. >> yeah, they certainly are dionne. that's why there are more than a thousand firefighters fighting these flames right now. the fire acreage here has increased more than 3500 acres of burned. and i learned in the last hour that seven firefighters have been injured fighting these flames. reporter

bay and the east bay, and then into the south bay up to 106, in morgan hill. as we look ahead in livermore, friday is also very hot. but if you're making plans for the weekend, it looks a little bit better for saturday. still, 96 degrees is hot, but it's going to be much better on sunday and we are going to keep those temperatures into much of next week. but we may be replacing the extreme heat with some humidity going into the weekend. this green here shows a surge of some mid-level moisture, and when we get that, we get sometimes clouds, higher humidity. it kind of feels more muggy, but also the possibility that that could help spark some thunderstorms. thunderstorms this time of year is not a good thing, because we could see lightning strikes that could start some new fires. so watching out for that saturday and sunday. but meanwhile our focus is the heat for the next three days. that may become dangerous during the middle of the day. make sure you're staying hydrated and trying to stay in the ac as much as possible. mike, we've got a crowd now in oakland.

northbay, inland to the east bay, everyone east of the oakland hills and most of the south bay. the santa clara valley has a small craft advisory for some dangerous swells, but we are going to be seeing temperatures heating up even more than today. let's look at our temperatures as they stand right now , well into the 90s inland in the east bay, otherwise, inland temperatures are mostly in the 80s but a step upward from yesterday, but not that far yet above average today. 60s and 70s around the bay, only upper 50s along the coast half of the bay. 10 to 15 degrees normal across the board which puts us into the 70s and 80s around the bay. 90s and low 100s of further inland, but again, temperatures are going down pretty quickly into the weekend. the same feature in the atmosphere resulting in hot temperatures, the heat dome, also traps pollution at ground-level and the wind will direct some of that smoke towards us from wildfires burning in northern california. a lot of it will remain elevated in the atmosphere. ground-level air quality is not inspected to get worse than moderate,

spots across the entire bay area.n east of mount diablo, high temperatures only hitting the upper 70s. 70s down the peninsula, around 60 degrees in half moon bay but you will struggle to even hit 60 with temperatures in the north bay maxing out in the 70s except farther north, hillsboro , temperatures around or just above 80 degrees during the afternoon tomorrow. let's take a look at some event or casts around the bay area, the cooler air is going to be evident around sacramento, they will have a break from the 90s and 100s. the last weekend of the california state fair, that is a big change. for the san francisco marathon on sunday, it is going be pleasant for running, temperatures only in the upper 50s, plenty of cloud cover overhead so the weather should be helping you out. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast and eventually we return to typical summertime weather, upper 80s and low 90s for inland parts of the bay area, beginning on tuesday and continuing through the rest of next week. which will carry us in

for most of the east bay into the north bay. we're still hitting 99 in napa tomorrow, and 101 in los gatos tomorrow afternoon. but then on saturday, as more people are out and about, it's going to be much more comfortable. but we are also going to add in some humidity. we're going to see a surge of some mid-level moisture in the darker green indicates where we are going to see more clouds, and the possibility that this could also develop some thunderstorms and possibly some lightning. looks like the highest risk is to our south, but we'll continue to monitor that as it moves in a little bit closer. so we're trading the dry heat for humid heat this weekend. it's still going to feel hot, but at least those numbers are coming down. and on sunday we'll be in the low 90s. the dry air returns early next week with highs in the low 90s, which is still above normal, but a break from the triple digits. and i don't see any more of this excessive heat in the extended forecast. so that's the good news as after we make it through this, and we

the bay area. let's go now to kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow look maybe some sort of changes tomorrow. yeah, i think we may cool down slightly. i mean, not by much, though. the heat is going to be on some of the valleys. we're talking maybe 106 degrees in some spots inland. so >> maybe those temperatures back off ever so slightly. but it's only going to be along the coastline and just inside the bay. right now, we are awaiting a couple patches of fall look like they're going to form along the coastline, not seen anything yet toward the golden gate bridge. today, another day of some record breaking temperatures. can you believe it was 110 in livermore today, 100 degrees. that was also a record in samara fell and all around the bay area. 110 in antioch, 101 in san jose. 107 in concord 103 in santa rosa. 104 in the bottom. then you head out toward the coastline, a very comfortable 68 degrees in half moon bay. but advisories and warnings for he continuing around most of the bay area ex

, taking a look at the bay bridge and to the city of the bay, san francisco. meteorologist kari hall tracking the weather for us and this morning, very pleasant outside. very nice there. especially in san francisco, where we're starting out at 55 degrees. and we know that it's going to be much cooler compared to the inland areas. walnut creek starts out the morning at 67 degrees, and we're seeing upper 60s for a lot of cities around the bay area, but it will also be hazy today as we get some near surface smoke coming in once again, very much like yesterday. a look at the wider view shows that we do have quite a few fires burning, and one of the bigger ones is farther off towards the south and east over parts of the sequoia national forest. so we're watching that as our temperatures once again heat up and head for the mid to upper 90s in the north bay. napa today, 97 degrees 102 today in livermore and in fairfield. but this is the peak of the heat before our temperatures gradually come back down. so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike's been showing us

the bay area bracing for the longest heat wave of the year so far in some cases, the bay area cities are expecting temperatures that truly could be life threatening. volunteers with the community homeless alliance ministry, or cham are handing out cold water to the unhoused, and san jose doctors say they have already started to see an increase in people coming into emergency rooms with heat related illness. they're warning that the unsheltered, the elderly and the young children are among the most vulnerable. it's hard for them to know when they're getting too much heat, and it's hard for them to keep well hydrated because the body surface area is different in small children than in adults. all right. to reduce your risk of heatstroke or exhaustion, doctors recommend staying indoors as much as possible. wear a hat and sunscreen if you have to go out. most importantly , stay hydrated, limit alcohol and caffeine because they can dehydrate you. some good words of advice. and for some people in the bay area this heat wave is going to be an incredible one. and even bayside locations, some

this to the north bay parts of the east bay and the santa clara valley, southern california, going to get very, very hot. if you're headed in that direction, he warnings are posted there. some of those temperatures as high as 110 degrees in the deserts. thank you, lawrence. the man accused of killing his 5 family members in alameda. >> now facing a 5 murder charges following the death of his one year-old son earlier this week, investigators arrested shane kelly and last week after they say he shot his wife 2 children and in-laws at their home. the youngest victim in the case was the lone survivor until he passed away at the hospital on monday with this 5th, the murder charge, the potential prison sentence for kelly and has now increased to just under 250 years to life in prison. he is scheduled to be formally charged on july 22nd. meantime, a vigil is growing outside that home honoring those 5 family members. one of the people killed was 6 year-old william andrew kilian. his little league coach says the team is now trying to come to terms with the massive loss. >> our team will not be

the bay.re is a theme here for tomorrow, which is that in general, everybody gets 85 degrees drop. sometimes a little more or less but in general it is a five or six degree cooldown. we are getting everybody in. i will sweeten the numbers now, we lose the set that shows us tomorrow's daytime highs because of these are 5 to 6 degrees cooler than today, the real story is what is coming on saturday. so we will just pick out some representative spots from that, to help tell that story. look at the inland valley's. for saturday, 22 degrees cooler than you were today. concord is 20 degrees cooler. san jose, near 20 degrees cooler. san francisco in the mid-70s by the time we get there, santa rosa getting in on the act, to. what does that mean for daytime highs on saturday? i will bring in the actual numbers for what saturday's daytime highs will look like. again, we will just kind of stick to these representative spots, just because it helps tell the story in january in general for what the trend is.

we continue to head off in the east bay. and up into the north bay.s on a day like today. especially as many americans are traveling around for the fourth of july holiday. wanting to do outdoor activities and get some pool time in. do anything outside. right? well, just continue to wear sunscreen as we head into dh afternoon hours today. continue to hydrate and check in on your loved ones and make sure they're doing the exact same thing too. there's plenty of pools that are open for us right now that are free throughout our communities and there's cooling centers too. especially down into the santa clara valley. where daytime highs today are expected to hit around 105 degrees in areas like los gatos and san jose. we'll continue to keep you updated with this heat here in the bay area. and i'll let you know how long this is going to last coming up in just a bit. luckily for our friends along the coast we're holding on tight to 70s this afternoon. the apartments i'm sure are full in areas like half-moon bay and pacifica. speaking of g. the roads? you sai

we've got the same here in the bay.ur hottest spots will be the inland east bay in pink where you do see those excessive heat warnings all the way until 11:00pm tomorrow night, 60's and 70's for sf today. as i mentioned, getting close, if not to 80 degrees in a few neighborhoods, 70's at the coastline. nice day to be heading out that direction. well, 80's 90's to triple digits for the rest of us woodside at 95 today, cupertino, los gatos saratoga close to triple digits. well, actually in the triple digits for pleasanton livermore, walnut creek conquered in danville, oakland and san leandro. you'll be in the 80's this afternoon. berkeley and richmond in the 70's, antioch, in vacaville among or hotter spots at 102 today. tomorrow we will still have a few triple digits but most inland areas will begin to fall into the 90's and will fall a little bit further into thursday. after that temperatures plummet. and by friday, we're going to be the 80's at the very warmest 60's and 70's for most of us. >> right. all right, john, t

this heat advisory for parts of the north bay, the east bay hills, and down in through the south bay. as we look at that heat advisory today and tomorrow, 90s to some low one hundreds very high fire danger. please take caution of that and take caution with yourselves. drink lots of water. stay in the shade, maybe indoors with the ac on 91. in los gatos, 95 morgan hill. and we're going to do the mid 80s in san jose, 77 in oakland. so we're going to get a little bit of that help from the sea breeze. but 97 in concord with 93 out in livermore 60s and 70s along the peninsula to some 80s there. and we'll do upper 60s in the city with more of those warm temperatures of out there towards the marin county coastline, even in through parts of the interior. so we'll continue to watch as the heat builds. look at livermore tomorrow, even hotter. a break through the weekend, but then those triple digits return next week. out there in the tri valley. mike, what are we looking at? and the roads this morning? still looking at the slower drive here for westbound 24. it extends. it starts just after the

over 100 degrees for much of the north bay into the east bay. and unfortunately, on saturday, as we were hoping to see those temperatures coming down in some spots, we're back up to 110 degrees. so watching out for this prolonged risk of heat that we see extending into the weekend and the next week, it's in the upper 90s, it looks a little bit better, but still quite dangerous as we are dealing with days on end of all of this heat and looking at san francisco, we're in the mid 80s today and we'll see more of those 80s in the forecast through the weekend, and then we'll bring it back to the mid 70s for the start of next week. mike, you're hearing about a crash in lanes block. yeah, we actually were able to see a glimpse of it. there we go longer. look this is eastbound 80 the east shore freeway going away from the bay bridge. chp had word that all lanes were blocked. now notice because we have this live camera, even though all lanes of the freeway getting away from the bay bridge and past university here, they're blocked. it looks like folks are

temperatures around the bay just fine.night temperatures are going to even out, and the fog is going to try to push across the bay. it's just not going to have very much success. the fog shows up in bright white on futurecast. there's very little of it. that duller shade of gray is that monsoonal cloud cover rolling through. it'll back away from the coast as we head towards late morning. sunshine along the coast, even if you're not going to warm up a whole lot. temperatures tonight falling to the 60s, a little above average. closer to the bay and around the coast, bitter chance of getting into the 50s. our temperatures tomorrow heat up quickly. that means we are having a higher jumping off point for temperatures to take off once the sun comes up. temperatures up into the mid-90s in san jose. 100 degrees for a high in los fwa toes and mor fwan hill and at or above 100 degrees east of the hills. into the 90s for fremont and redwood city. only 60s at half moon bay. that nearly 40-degree temperature difference across the bay.

area counties, the majority in the east bay and in the south bay. so that's what we're experiencing right now. we really want our customers to be prepared. this is not only a very severe, but also a very rare incident. we started tracking these kinds of conditions back in the 1970s, and since then we have only seen 18 incidents that compared to this one. >> okay. well, we will talk about preparations in just a moment. but getting back to the customers that are affected, can you tell us what are some of the factors that help you all determine how long the psps will last? >> we're really monitoring the weather. we have our meteorology department and they're constantly tracking the weather. what has to happen before those customers can be restored is that we have to be the weather has to subside, and as soon as that happens, we patrol our lines to make sure that there is no debris or branches on the lines. and then we begin the process of turning those customers back on. so we really have to wait for the extreme heat. and it's not just heat, it's many

to the bay area.that causes the clear skies, the air kind of sinks down under high pressure, exerting a high amount of pressure on the earth. so what happens when the air is sinking? it warms up. and so we're going to have some warmer temperatures by the end of the week. taking a look at san jose. not triple digits, not upper 90s but 90. and that's our warm up that we are going to see this week. and then coming down a few degrees. and it may be a warm start to early next week, but of course we're focused on the start to this week. that's going to be great for us with some mild temperatures and heating up by the end of the week into saturday. but once again, it's not really extreme and we're still keeping it cool in san francisco with 60s and 70s here. mike, you're tracking two problems on our commute. yeah, the first one is here, the bay bridge. i'm going to get out of your way so you can see this, but you can see the flashing lights as i step to the side. those flashing lights are three vehicles. two

the bay area. some of their equipment just can't handle this extreme heat, and with this, heat comes with concerns about fire danger. just in the past hour, we've heard about a new fire that's popping up in lake county. it's causing evacuations in the city of lower lake. that's just south of clear lake. crews say it started as a commercial structure fire. it quickly spread to nearby brush. as of last check, it's burned five acres, but it is growing. structures are threatened. of course, we'll keep an eye on this fire throughout this evening. and north of that, this orange haze hanging above oroville after a fire exploded in the area yesterday morning. it's in butte county, just outside of oroville city limits. it's called the thompson fire. it has now grown to 3500 acres. it is 0% contained, 28,000 people have been told to evacuate at least four buildings destroyed already. so i packed my mother, my child, my grandfather, my step grandmother and seven dogs and a cat into a four door car and off we

down here towards the rest of the bay. this helped a little bit, but it didn't help enough. let's look at today's daytime highs. we'll get the wide view. we'll take everybody in for the daytime highs for today, kind of pick out your part of the bay, but the part that really matters most in terms of comparison with tomorrow is the inland east bay because even if most of these numbers are cooler than you were yesterday by a couple degrees, we are going back up again tomorrow. so if it was 103 today for concord, 103 in livermore, i've got to clear the board. tomorrow they go back up. now we're looking at 107 for concord and livermore. let's check out san jose to get the south bay in here at 98. if we've got time, i want the north bay to see their numbers, too. you've got a great drop in numbers today in santa rosa. it was in the low to mid-90s today. it was like 10 degrees cooler in the north bay today because cooler air was filtering in through the petaluma gap. i think you'll still get a little bit of that help tomorrow alo

fire danger in the north bay, the east bay hills and in the santa cruz mountains.imes during the afternoon bone dry down to about 10. we'll keep you updated if anything changes underneath that red flag. warning here's future weather. hour by hour we are warming up pretty fast once again. 90 inland by lunchtime, 70s and 80s along the bay shoreline. and later on this afternoon, intense heat again inland. but the coast stays pretty cool. so highs today above 100 degrees inland once again with that excessive heat warning in effect 80s and 90s around the bay shoreline will keep the beaches cool in the 60s for daytime highs. the three day forecast this heat wave rolls on through the upcoming weekend with full sunshine, but next week we do have some cooler weather finally moving in. we'll show you that coming burning just outside yosemite national park. in the last 30 minutes, cal fire put out an update. they say the fire is now 5% contained. they also revised the number of acres burned down slightly to 843 acres. this is near the town of mariposa, which is a popular area

the east bay. he says the da is not using extra resources airlines flight was forced to abort takeoff. this was yesterday in tampa. a tire caught on fire as the plane was accelerating down the runway. 174 passengers and six crew members were on board. thankfully, everybody was okay. oh, goodness. american airlines is saying that they were able to put everyone on another flight. happening today, governor gavin newsom will reveal a new effort to boost public safety in the east bay. he'll be holding a press conference with chp officials in just a few hours. and, amanda, that announcement is coming as there's new reports about some challenges. the governor's office is facing. apparently working with the alameda county da and kumasi politico reports the governor's office is accusing the office of alameda county da pamela price, of ignoring offers to send attorneys to help prosecute crimes. >> the governor's offer was first made back in february. politico got ahold of a letter sent by the governor's cabi

the south bay is feeling the heat, also. there's also growing concern over the health of san jose's unhoused population. a homeless man recently died from severe heat. san jose is expected to be under a heat advisory through midweek. at the same time the santa clara valley water district board of directors is going to vote on a first of its kind proposal to sweep homeless camp from the waterways. that vote happens tomorrow at district headquarters. as len ramirez reports, the board could take action on a situation that's been building for years. >> reporter: people living and camping along the creek in san jose has been an issue for decades, but tomorrow will be the first time there is a plan to remove the camps to keep them from coming back. pastor scott wages is loading cases of bottled water into his homeless ministry van to hand out to people living on the streets and in the creeks of san jose. he says it's a life and death situation for them this summer. >> last week one man expired on the street. we've got to get this

to the south bay.ut right now we're starting out at 61. in livermore, and it's 58 in oakland. mid 50s for san francisco as well as mostly mid 50s for the north bay. so a nice cool start to the day. but then take a look at our highs up to 94 in napa and santa rosa in san francisco. it's in the mid 70s and 60s near the coast. so you can see the range and temperatures that we'll have as our high temperatures hit the triple digits in fairfield and concord and in the south bay were mostly in the mid 90s, san jose in the upper 80s for today and about a degree or two hotter for tomorrow. this will be the peak of the heat, where we're starting to see a lot more red on the map here. that's a major heat risk as this with prolonged exposure may have an impact to your health. as our temperatures head for the upper 90s in napa, it will be 106 in ukiah, so we'll just have to plan our day around the heat, make sure we're staying hydrated and taking breaks in the shade. if you have to work outside, we're going to see
