case for not just residents in the east bay. in california district 12, but across our major metropolitan cities across the country and what would you advocate for on the federal level to improve public safety and reduce crime? >> something else that your district is struggling with? >> absolutely. i mean, as a as a as a small business leader, i experience a lot of stories day and night with small businesses experiencing robbery, assaults and including my own, my own family members. last year, three of my uncles and aunts experienced a home invasion. and so this issue is very deep to my heart. and everyone who really just wants to stay here and stay rooted. the second part of the modern cities act that i just mentioned right now is going to address public safety by nationalizing and standardizing police departments so that we can be able to meet the ratio that's necessary to ensure that there is a quick response time and so within that, we will again set a national standard for our police departments per 1000 residents currently

now today's pickett's again happening across the east bay and they're all being hosted by the east bay coalition for student success. and that's made up of about 21 chapters. all part of the california teachers association. these pickett's will take place at different locations and it will all be outside of school hours. and later this evening, essentially they're all advocating for smaller class sizes, more resources to retain and attract teachers, supportive environments and better tools for students to grow in the classrooms. now pleasanton in dublin teachers association are rallying together as both prepare for a fact-finding session, which is the last step that the group goes through before they can actually strike and walk out of the classroom. and this is because they have not been able to meet an agreement at the bargaining table with district's now, many east bay schools, as we mentioned, are not far behind in this process. and the association says if an actual strike does occur, then that means that this could impact thousands of students back out here live. we are in dublin

interior east bay close to the sacramento valley.would include antioch, livermore, concord, even solano county. napa county. i think the best chance of finding a tornado is likely around sacramento later today, but we still have that chance with that rotation in the atmosphere. that's why we've raised the storm impact scale to a level three today for severe storms possible. now not everybody's going to see one, but the chance is there and we do find those storms popping up. we could see pockets of heavy rain, some gusty winds, future weather showing you this morning the best chance for those showers and storms in the north bay. then later on this afternoon, here's 230. we could see some of those cells developing in parts of the east bay as we get that sunshine and that daytime heating, a flood watch in effect for the entire region. as we watch more downpours later today, could see some more isolated areas of flooding and that wind advisory through tonight were winds even right now are gusting close to 45mph. we'll take a closer look

crime in the east bay. they are. yeah. they say the california department of justice will be the point state attorneys to help prosecute suspected criminals. kron four's will tran on the story for us part of the one-tw punch. now, as you mentioned, he will send out state attorneys to help. >> local districts like the alameda county district attorney's office. this is in partnership with pamela price. once you catch them, you have to prosecute them and they are basically adding the man power and their resources and their expertise. 2 local jurisdictions like oakland throughout the east bay to help prosecute violent offenders. other offenders, including retail theft, burglaries, car theft, property crimes, catch them, make sure that they stay in jail as opposed to walking free because they don't have the resources or the will to prosecute them. so this is being in conjunction with state attorney general rob bonta. take a look at your screen. he also made a statement earlier this morning. he says the east bay

he was taken into the martinez detention facility. >> from the east bay to the south bay. now we have new data from the silicon valley group aiming to end homelessness. and it shows that santa clara county is housing more homeless people than ever before. but at the same time, the unhoused population is also growing. destination home says that nearly 4500 unhoused people were housed in 2023, however, the rate of homeless people in santa clara county also jumped 24%. that's more than 800 households in the county. a representative from destination home says the cost of rent is a major factor. we know we have guy rocketing rents in our community. >> and people aren't making enough money. and the combination of those 2 coupled with the fact that we don't have affordable, truly affordable housing options of the scale that we really need means that so many people in our community are just one page missed paycheck, one financial emergency away from ending up on the streets. destination home says 96% of the unhoused. >> people that get into affordable housing actually stay permane

the new chief is no stranger to the east bay law enforcement. he served as the pittsburgh police chief. his first day is on monday.>>> one of the biggest names in silicon valley history is facing a legal battle. sergey brin is being sued for wrongful death. this is from a plane crash near half moon bay last year. the widow of the pilot said he and others are preventing her from recovering her husband's body. ian cole has the exclusive interviews. >> reporter: on may 20th, 2023, a twin-engine plane crashed trying to get back to half moon bay. it turns out it was sergey brin's plane. the people on board, both pilots, died. in this month a wrongful death suit was filed.>> we've been together for everything. >> reporter: she said she's devastated by the death of her husband. she said he was a navy pilot with experience flying all over the world and was one of sergey brin's pilots for years. they were flying the plane to hawaii and then to fiji. the complaint said the airplane did not have the fuel capacity for the trip so they had a mechanic put in

and let's go to the east bay now or recall petition for tucson. oakland school board members was approved by the alameda county registrar voters. yeah, this recall comes after the board members made a decision to ban pride flags on school property. we've got. >> will tran live in snow with got here that upset a lot of people in the community to the point where they started the recall effort. they collected 246 signatures. now, you might say that's a lot of signatures, but so not only has a little bit more than 800 people. so that's more than one-fourth of their population. they turned in those signatures to the alameda county elections. officials. we're talking the 2 board members, ryan jorgensen and linda hurley. now the board of elections. they have 30 days to certify the signatures to verify that they are, in fact who they are. but the supporters say trust us, they are legitimate, no problems there. and they believe they probably have even more than the required 246 signatures to get in on the ballot. now what's going to happen is after they ce

neighboring communities here in the east bay. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> all right. joining me now is abc seven news. insid phil matier. phil, this is a huge injection of personnel, 120 chp officers in oakland and are in the east bay. let's begin with what that means exactly. out on the street. >> well, it's unpressed dan, you usually don't see this side of increase in highway patrol officers in the city unless there's some huge super bowl or apec type or a disaster or a riot or something like that. going on, or massive demonstrations to deploy them to a city simply to try to assist the police in dealing with daily crime is unheard of in these numbers. now, there were chp officers assigned to san francisco, and they still are to help curb the fentanyl crisis and state intelligence officers from the national guard are cooperating in that effort. and they've made several arrests and made some sizable seizures of drugs in the east bay. they've already had six chp officers there. they have resulted in over 100 arrests, a
