let's talk about all of this with barbara f walter, the professor of political science at the universitylifornia in san diego, and author of how civil wars start and how to stop them. professor, thank you so much for joining. i really appreciate it. i would love to start with getting your reaction to president biden's speech yesterday. what do you make of it? >>> it was much, much needed speech. one of the surprising things for somebody who has watched american democracy since as early as 2008 and watched a decline, is the fact that americans really don't -- they haven't wanted to hear that message, they want to believe that our democracy is the greatest in the world, they want to believe that it will always be strong and that there is nothing really to worry about. but the reality has been that our democracy has been in decline. it has accelerated since 2021. i think that maria raisa, who is a nobel peace prize winner, she recently wrote that 2024 is going to be a definitive year in terms of american democracy, whether we keep it. and of, course if america's democracy declined significa
