that is warner bros. stock when this deal was announced, of course, to merge the warner brothers assets with discovery. it was a $25 stock when the deal closed. it's now below $7. it's not surprising that you would write down the value of the assets of the linear tv assets given that decline in your stock price as well. it's sort of -- people would be wondering, what are you doing? where do you have those things marked? on the call, the cfo discussed the fact that the nba rights may have been a triggering event. you know, you have a certain cushion, and then when you make assumptions based on the fact that, all right, tnt may not have the nba, what are our sub fees going to be? what is it worth? and you then -- they would have had an impairment charge regardless but he did indicate on the call, perhaps, that was the triggering event. he said, this is clearly where a discussion comes into play and compels us to re-evaluate our business case and strategic planning process with the latest assumptions and the

warner is a bit obscure, because what is in the warner streaming numbers is cable hbo. so, it's not a pure look at their -- at streaming per se, when they talk about direct to consumer. and that clouds the picture. obviously propping up revenue, to some extent. now, when they say they only had 3 million plus subs, i think that probably lost a bunch of cable subs, and so, their actual streaming subs may have increased more than that. i don't know why they don't give a clear picture, but that is a company that is nowhere near being able to get to the point that it's streaming revenues are e give lebt to its linear revenues, and in that company, linear represents 80% of revenue and profits of the business. >> you gave tom a bunch of accolades as you invited him in. you could have just basically said it in one word, dan, you know what that word is? >> stud. >> stud. and he is. so, here you go, tom. you know, since we're on the hemingway thing. the sun also rises, and it rises in the form of netflix, which, by the way, has given you a bit of a pull back over the last couple

i want to move ahead because you mentioned hbo and warner bros.g earnings after the close today. the big story is whatever it says about losing the nba media rights after next season. talk a little bit about the damage from using -- from losing the nba games that extends to other parts of her brother discovery portfolio. i read it is other networks lose leverage over the other rights that they charge. porter: i think david is probably thanking his lucky stars he did lose those sports rights because it is helping deliver the the huge still significant debt burden warner bros. discovery is working under. they are now part of this new bizarre company called venue which is espn, wonder brothers discovery and fox where they are combining their resources to buy sports rights and sharing them and broadcasting them. i cannot figure out how that is going to work. i'm not sure the public is going to pay the 40 or $45 a month fee that they are asking. scarlet: i'm glad you bring that up because it is not just wondering if the public is going to pay for it. y

paramount, like warner brothers discovery is dragged down by its linear business. 17% in declines s in licensing and ad revenue. the ceo said it was business as usual until the deal with sky dance closes, which is said to happen in the first half of next year. melissa? >> is it premature to think that based on paramount, based on warner brothers, based on disney and the streaming results specifically that the streaming business is improving or, at least, they're able to cut enough to make it look better? >> look, across the board, we are seeing progress in the streaming space. all four of those companies that you just mentioned, nbc universal, our parent company, as well as disney, warner brothers discovery, and paramount, all showed some growth in streaming. i have to point out that of those, warner brothers discovery is the one that showed more subscriber additions than expected, though it did lose more money than anticipated. so, it's not always a sort of a linear line here, but what we are seeing is they're managing to make more money. we did have that surprise
