was originally related to the better market street plan, but as we all know, market street is the city's primary transit artery. there's 13 bus lines that run up and down market, in addition to the f train that bring thousands of people downtown every day. and since private vehicles were removed, those busses are running up to four minutes faster. so this was primarily about making our transit system run faster, and also about safety for people walking and biking on market street. so >> so do you think that this has achieved the goal, the safety and also the better, smoother transit? >> yeah. if you look at the city's data, busses are now running up to four minutes faster in each direction, which is just a huge amount of time saved for commuters, you don't get gains like that in public transit efficiency very easily. so this is a huge win for muni and our transit system, especially as people are coming back to work. and we don't want all those people driving downtown and causing more congestion. as far as safety goes, there's been a 40% reduction in collisions since private cars were rem

what we found on streets like valencia or south bend this, or -- south van nass, is a street with one each direction plus a term pocket can move just as much traffic as a street with two lanes in each direction. left turning vehicles mean the two lanes of traffic are never really available for through traffic. these road diets that we do have been tremendously effective for improving safety outcomes for all road users, without exacerbating traffic. they do make all cars slow down to the speed of the most prudent driver. this week we are getting started in partnership with the department of public works on work to restripe all of evans between third and cesar chavez, and as part of this work will be collecting a lot of data, talking to industrial users in the industrial district and talking to folks in the bayview commercial district and in the mission about how it is working. we will make some adjustments along the way and if it is successful, then we will start another project that is more capital-intensive to make it permanent. if it is not successful, we will turn it back the way t

we don't families sleeping on the streets ever. we are hearing from communities and city staff those working on the ground about what's happening and we have been developing solutions. we currently provide 337 units of family shelter and transitional housing and over 2300 units of family housing and the homeless response system. but clearly there is more that needs to be done. while it is critical to respond to newcomers, we also must balance the existing demand for shelter. this includes people and families experiencing homelessness, including those fleeing violent and gender based violent situations. as we confront the city's challenges, we have a opportunity to work on solutions together. i made it clear that when people work with me that i will work with them. and i want to thank supervisors melgar and supervisor ronan for their partnership on this new proposal and i hope it will earn significant support at the board of supervisors. our plan is to increase the city's capacity for family shelter system, hsh will speed up the rat
