zoe mintz joins us with what we need to know out the door. blake snell will be looking at a wonderful day. nothing can rain on his parade. >> not even a little bit of rain that we might be seeing tomorrow morning on the coast. for most of us today it will be sunshine and it will be heat that we have to deal with. one of my favorite things to do is show you the clouds, the rain and the fog. it's not nearly as farther inland as what we were seeing a couple of days ago when the entire bay area was socked in by the fog. there is a little bit in places like the santa clara valley but warm this afternoon. plenty of sunshine. you can see that on the time lapse. it's nice to see the sunshine and beautiful sunrise to kick off the morning. the colors are gorgeous. red, yellow, pinks. the sun is revealing fog at the ground but not nearly as thick or dense as what we have been seeing. it reminds you that the atmosphere moves like a river, a wave because it's fluid. it's made out of water vapor. we will see that fog continuing to pull back from the inland

zoe mintz joining us live this morning from our virtual reality weather set., this was incredibly significant considering august is one of the driest, if not the driest month in the bay area typically. >> the second driest behind july but either way it was so nice to see the rain yesterday. as you can see behind me, barely any clouds in the sky and the clouds in this sky are lit up. if you are awake and you want to check out a beautiful sunrise, enjoy it this morning. open your windows. yesterday it was so cloudy and gloomy. this morning, is quite the opposite. it is beautiful , after a day filled with rain. i want to show you we picked up .1 inches. it does not seem like much but the fact that we normally for this time of year, only see about .03 inches, we are already above average from that one day of rainfall. we are not expecting any more rain this afternoon but i cannot rule out an isolated drizzle along the coastal communities. the second driest month of the year, in august we see 0.6 inches throughout the entire month. thing one tenth of an inch and on

i'm max darrow. >>> zoe mintz, we are starting off with a little bit of fog.ld be a nice one? >> it should be nice. fog is what you expect. it's a welcome sight. nice to watch. someone not here originally, this is not a normal weather pattern. this is specific and unique to the bay area because we live on the west coast and we are the first place that feels the winds across the pacific ocean. that's why we normally have an onshore flow this year. first of all, the sunrise is spectacular. if you are awake, you will see it continuing to bring in more of that fog. what it's doing is keeping out the wildfire smoke which is really great news for this time of year. we don't want it in our hair. many people are having to deal with it from the park fire across northern california. look at the wind direction. it's taking the upper level slope that may be in the air and maybe bringing us a beautiful sunrise this morning. it will carry it away from the bay area. we are not going to tampa bay dealing with any of the thick wildfire smoke, any of the bad air quality which i

meteorologist zoe mintz is here. zoe how long before these temps back off?>well luckily, as soon as tomorrow. it's a really one day heat wave with a gradual cooldown through the rest of the week. as this area of high pressure also known as the heat dome, we've dealt with a couple of them so far this summer, but the couple of them that we did see last month were a lot more impressive. this one today, yes, it's definitely bringing our temperatures anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees above average but it's nothing unbearable. there is that heat advisory in effect it is going to be hotter. heat safety is going to be a priority, especially for those who are sensitive to slightly higher heat here in san francisco. like ann said, it's a beautiful day. plenty of sunshine. finally seeing a little bit more of that sky, especially if you live closer to the coast. but we're still seeing that marine layer holding on strong temperatures in concord 95 degrees livermore. it only gets hotter 101. it's not going to get any hotter from here, though. it's only going to get cooler as

meteorologist zoe mintz shows us where and where you can get a break from it. zoe. >darren>well as usual this time of year, it's the coast. it's here in san francisco that we're seeing that fog. it's been sticking around all afternoon long, especially on the west side of the city where salesforce tower just barely snuck its head out of the clouds for a couple minutes early this afternoon. but you are still seeing those clouds sticking around for a lot of us, especially in those higher elevations lower elevations, though, it's mostly clear it's not seeing that mist that we saw early this morning temperatures right now again here in san francisco. and closer to the bay, that's comfortable. places like oakland, 65 degrees right now. that's not too shabby. places like san jose, though you're in the mid to upper 70s santa rosa, mid 80s. then you get up to places like concord or inland east bay, communities that are rising into the upper 80s and 90s this afternoon, and it's only going to get hotter into tomorrow. so if you have any outdoor plans, maybe do so today where y

. >> zoe, i feel like we have seen that this year. the storms develop far offshore, deep in the tropics and they moved to hurricane status, downgrade but can build right back up again. why is that? >>> it is all about the temperature of the water. if it comes into contact with more favorable ocean temperatures there is less wind shear and that allows the hurricane to gain strength. as long as it is over water of some sort and it is warm, that hurricane can reform and restrengthen. it is really far offshore and that is good news. it will not impact necessarily directly the east coast. let's look at that. yes, it is impacting bermuda, that tiny island that is sitting in the middle of the atlantic. the east coast of the united states, other than the rip currents, should be in the clear when it comes to direct impacts from the hurricane. indirect, yes. you will be dealing with a lot of churned-up ocean waters, but at least you don't get a direct landfall. for us in california, we don't worry about connectivity. there is a little storm sys

we will talk to zoe mintz in just a bit.g you to the coastline because there is troubling news, hundreds of sick sea lions are washing up on the coast due to an outbreak of toxicology, experts are saying these more intense algae blooms could be the result of climate change. >> reporter: stress has always been a part of the job for dr. field, but lately it has been bordering on frantic. >> we start taking a look at our patients and assess their neurologic responses. >> reporter: for the last three weeks, the medical director at the marine mammal center in sausalito has been racing against the clock treating dozens of sea lions that have washed up along the california coastline. >> when we get our patients in the hospital, one of the most important things is to figure out what is going on with them. >> reporter: since july 19th, the center has taken in nearly 150 sea lions, exhibiting symptoms of poisoning, a neurotoxin that gets into the fish the animals eat. almost every single pen is filled with different patients in differ

zoe fires an impactor at a target at likm a second. so this is what we get from the gun. yes.. do we know how much of an extra kick the asteroid got from this momentum? we know that it gave a significant extra kick. dart mission was an incredible success because it did... its first objective was to demonstrate that you can target a spacecraft onto an asteroid, hit it in the place you intended to, and deflect the asteroid. the impact produced a change in the orbital period by 33 minutes. that's quite a lot. now, if there were no momentum enhancement, that would have given you a seven—minute change in the period. but though momentum enhancement is useful, accurately calculating it is hard, as you need to know the composition of the asteroid. it's good because any momentum enhancement you get means you get a bigger deflection for the size and speed of the spacecraft you hit. it's bad because you don't know how much it's going to be. when we find an asteroid that's going to hit us, we have to send a reconnaissance mission to measure its properties, so we can then adjust those mode
