you're watching al jazeera where we're tracking breaking news at this hour out of washington, d.c. d.c. police are searching for an active shooter on the grounds of the washington navy yard. that is in southeast washington, d.c. it all started shortly after 8:20 this morning. that is when shots were reported fired nctsed the naval sea command system building on the grounds of the washington navy yard. a police spokesman said there are four victims including one that's a police officer. there are by way of numbers about 3,000 people that work at the naval sea system commands headquarters. emergency teams are there working to provide shelter for

all personnel. we're joined right now by phone with manuel gomez. he is an fbi agent. mr. gomez, can you hear me? do we have mr. gomez? >> this is the building where the shooting took place this morning. >> we are listening to sporadic live coverage. the image is a helicopter from the united states park police. a man is air lifted from the top of the building by . by way of history the building you're looking at, the situation there is a fortress. it was built in the late 1700s and looks like a port at the sea. it sits on the bank of the river, which is considered the east part of the potomac river. we understand there have been four people including a police officer who was shot. we also understand that the gunman, according to the washington post -- i'm quoting

the washington post at this time may be holed up inside one of the rooms in that fortress. we're joined by phone right now with our white house correspondent mike viqueira. by my estimates there are about five police agencies that serve that area. it is a thick wicket in washington, d.c. >> this historic facility is more than 200 years old there. it holds the navy sea system's command which has 3,000 people employed there that work there every day. that is command staff head "s to the navy and it's the beating heart of the navy. a lot of people in the d.c. area are unfamiliar with the yard. regan national airport, a flight stop there as well. extra security is a few blocks

north at the u.s. capitol. >> an active shooter is said to be still at large within the navy yard. obviously, a lockdown situation now in southeast washington and in the surrounding area. >> mike, as you know, the capitol is not that far from there. we're sure of the security measures put in place, but where from your ran taj point what about the white house? anytime it happens in washington, d.c., it's safe to say they go into lockdown. there's a massive metro station there with a bunch of people headed out for lunch. this looks like a virtual fortress beyond the fortress that is the washington navy

yard. >> ten years ago if you walked through the neighborhood, it was a series of difficult lap at a timed warehouses. >> it was a crack neighborhood. >> reporter: yeah, it was. much like the rest of washington, this area has experienced a resurgence. the housing and urban development is -- the department of transportation has moved its headquarters down there.
