♪ theme >> welcome to aljazeera. i'm del walters. we are bringing you live special coverage from washington, d.c. flags there and around the country are at half staff in honor of the 12 victims killed yesterday at the washington navy yard. also today, defense secretary chuck hagel will be laying a wreath in honor of those who lost their lives. randall, what is the mood there today? >> we've seen the navy yard staff entering, most stayed home. they have been told not to speak to the press about the details,

but clearly there's a sense of relief and obviously still a deep sense of shock and sadness about the tragedy that occurred here in the navy yard. the wreath laying ceremony will begin in moments with secretary of defense chuck hagel laying a wreath in honor of the victims at the navy memorial. later today, the senate will go into session. we are expecting comments from there along with the house this afternoon. the nation pauses to remember those who died as everyone tries to figure out exactly what triggers the gunman to take the action that he did. it is said by local officials that the navy yard is one of the most secure facilities in the city and that's saying a lot in a city that since 9/11 has seen tightened security in so many locations around the city. there are guards, there are cameras, there are -- we presume checks made of everyone who

enters. of course, the accused gunman had a valid pass to enter the facility, because he was working for a subcontractor for the defense department. the subcontractor was installing a communications commitment, i.t. equipment used by the navy and marines. what we don't know is whether there is a routine requirement for people entering the navy yard to be screened by metal detectors. >> this is the scene in washington at the navy memorial on pennsylvania avenue, a salutory sailor standing guard over the world as we now mourn the loss of 12 members of the navy family. stay tuned to aljazeera. much more at the top of the
