council in washington. live pictures of that. he's likely to touch on are fight to symptom the government from shutting down, the debate could be complicated by efforts to derail the president's health care reform law. randall pinkston joins us live. how will the republicans try to derail health care law. talk a blibled that. >> the first stage of this showdown at the okay corral. the fiscal year ends september 30th and if the congress does not pass a continuing resolution to keep things flowing then there will be a government shut down. so the republicans say they are willing to pass a continuing resolution but only if it strips funding from the affordable care

act, house resolution 59. just moments ago, the president's office of management and budget has released a statement saying that if in fact the house passes joint resolution 59 he will veto about bill. that is to say, he will accept a shut down. of course, the republicans are going to blame it on president obama, president obama is counting on the fact that the voters will be looking at the republicans who have tried repeatedly to block obamacare for the past four years, five years. none of those efforts have succeeded not even at the supreme court. it is possible that at the last minute house speaker joan boehner will introduce -- john boehner will introduce a bill that doesn't include obamacare. if he joins the two issues the president says he will veto about the bill and that's why we will have a shut down. >> okay randall the president says he will veto it and it will

almost certainly die in a democrat controlled senate. do the republicans have a backup plan? >> let me just say that when i say the president will veto it he's talking about presuming that the senate passes it too. because he can't -- he won't veto a house measure, it will be a measure passed by both chambers of congress. if both sides agree and send it to the president then he will veto the legislate. so--legislation. so now we're going to back up. it has to get through the senate. senate republicans are quite upset with their fellow republicans some of them in the house of representatives and they don't want to see a government shut down and they are saying don't have obamacare in part of a continuing resolution. let's just vote on a measure that will keep the government operating until at least the middle of october where we will

hit the debt sealing. senator ted cruz who has been leading the rk, encouraging us to put our necks on the line when you're saying you're not going to be able to do the same thing in the senate. it would be a comical side show but for the fact that so many lives and so much is on the line here. if there is a government shut down even for a few days, we're talking about stopped payments of checks, social security benefits, applications being delayed, government -- workers perhaps being furloughed, a whole long list of really, really bad action he that will have to be taken because the money stops flowing. so most people don't want to see that happen but there are some that are in our congress who are saying that's what's needed to control government spending.

are expected to present arguments aimed at presenting from pensions and health care benefits. vc tell us what's going on today. >> right now richelle it is an opportunity for city workers retirees and residents. they are opposed to this chapter 9 filing because they have so much to lose. for example retirees. they risk losing their pensions, part of their pension as well as health care and really they're at a point right now where they're not going to let this happen without a fight. >> together, linda peltier and her husband ken served 59 years on the police force. they've dodged bullets, saved lives and done everything you would think about police officers doing in the second most dangerous city. when they retired they thought they were set. >> the joke was how many years

you could live to get your pension. nobody thought about losing it. >> that all changed in july, when detroit became the largest city in history to declare bankruptcy. drowning in debt, if a federal court judge approves the city's bankruptcy retirees health care benefits and pensions will likely be cut. >> never once in my entire life, did i think at the opposite end when i retired that someone would tell me i've not got pension or health care. >> now they are prepared for the worst. >> it would change all our life plans, everything would change. >> and they would be dealt a big blow if there are any changes to their benefits. >> ken is takes 1,000 of drugs a month.

we would be thinking about two or $3,000 out of pockets and it would be devastating. >> michigan's toarnl general says the public employees pensions whether the city is bankrupt or not it must keep its promises to employees. >> i was just waiting to find out. we have in control over everything. >> with so much to lose creditors and employees alike are pleading their case before justice steven roasd rhodes whol decide whether the city is eligible for bankruptcy. in the meantime retired or near retired workers like the peltiers are left hanging hoping not to become casualties of a bankrupt detroit. and 110 people will have the opportunity today to speak before the judge. each will be given three minutes to make their case and with so much on the line, this is expected to be very emotional.

richelle. >> i would imagine so. has the city offered to pay any of their debts? >> as it stands right now no, that's not the case. i am aware that there are negotiations going on between the emergency manager and some of these unions but nothing has been put on the pr line yet. are the washington navy base opens today, suspected gunman aaron alexis supposedly sought hem last month for hearing voices. addressing holes in security and what secretary of defense chuck hagel calls red flags in alexis's past that were missed. president obama will attend a memorial for the victims this weekend. now to syria. the fighting goes on. activists said al qaeda-linked

we expect that he may make a comment about the though down that appears to be coming between the president and republicans, we'll continue to listen to that. in the meantime it was a week ago when russian president vladimir putin made headlines with an op ed, now it's senator john mccain's turn. he's not enhancing russia's global reputation, he is destroying it. he has made a friend of tirants and an enemy to oppressed. he is saying putin rules for himself not you. the new cash crop for tobacco growers, reaching out to hemp making it easy to make revenue off this new source.

mitchell. i hope you're off to a wonderful day so far. watching the country, first i want to mention the next player, northern california in order ward could see some rain. enjoy it if you have these outdoor plants. our big player is right through the midsection of the country, very easy to pick out where we have the frontal boundary, two stories with it: one is the temperature changes as you see this goes through and two the moisture including the risk for strong storms. some of which we're already seeing right now. so you can see in the last couple of frames, minnesota into wisconsin we have a thunderstorm watch box up, that means the potential for strong storms and on the northern side of the twin cities right now, warnings, big threat is wind 60 miles per hour or so and hail about pea size is what we've been seeing. you can see the moisture

extending well down tot southern plains with it. not only have we had that but a real temperature contrast. right now easily 77 into kansas city, where the front has gone through 50s? 54 in rapid city right now. the temperatures ahead are above average but when the front comes through it will bring us back to reality for this time year but you'll really see the change because we've been mild. ahead of the front 72 to start the day in memphis versus denver at 49. as we continue down the line some of that moisture moving into texas we're also getting from that topical system, as i mentioned earlier a little bit of moisture from that plume. texas is in drought stage so we can use anything we can get here. you can look at pretty wide coverage of places that could see decent rainfall over the next day or two as this system moves through. so that is some great news. in the meantime another dry day

for northeast. those temperatures have rebounded a little bit. a lot of these in the 70s. but be on the lookout because the system that i mentioned in the midwest, more ohio river valley and southward into the day tomorrow and then unfortunately just into the weekend, more of that moisture is going to be hitting the east coast, you might think about that just a little bit as you are starting to get those weekend plans firmed up. >> all right, nicole, thank you. two of the world's largest indictments are on display at sotheby's auction house, the small egg sized diamond mind in south africa in 2011 is expected to be sold for as much as $28 million. it will be auctioned off in sofheby's in october.
