kenyan military now have all floors of that shopping center but it's unknown how many hostages and al-shabab members are still inside. >> we hear more gunfire going on behind you. [ gunfire ] [ explosion ] >> you can see she was reporting on several large explosions at that mall which were followed by that gunfire. kenya interior minister saying two more attackers killed during the operation and 62 hostages have died during the two-day siege. dozens of americans, including five americans, were hurt. peter greste has more. >> reporter: from the moment that the gunmen lost their raid at the westgate mall shocking

video of the attack come out. panic families call out to one another as shots are echoed throughout the hall. they dash for the exit as gunfire grew louder and more frequent. elsewhere a mother and her children lie on the floor pretending to be dead, unsure when the othe the man on the ote of the screen wants to kill them or rescue them. eventually he convinces them that he is a police officer and guides them to safety. the police move from shop to shop search forgive others in hiding, constantly watching for attacksers. he guides. attackers out. on day two of the crisis with at least 68 dead kenya's president stood with the former prime minister and told the nation that justice would be done.

involvement. >> outside of the security cordons surrounding the mall a desperate man confronts the police. his wife and child are still inside. he tries to break through to go and find them. before the police drag him back. this crisis may still have a long time to go before it can truly be declared over. even once the kenyon military has caught all the attackers and freed all the survivors it will take a long time to clear the building and confirm that it is, indeed, over. only then can they answer questions about the attack they have long expected. >> tomorrow we're hearing that the first of over 100 speechers by member countries are going to be taking place.

iran's newly elected president hasahassan rouhani is going to e speak and secretary john kerry will discuss the issue of nuclear weapons. joining us now is john terrett. president obama is on his way to new york even as we speak, but we thought he might meet with rouhani, but we now know that kerry is going to be meeting with the foreign minister. >> that may still happen, we'll have to wait to see if president obama meets with the newly elected iranian president or not. but we've learned that the u.n. foreign policy chief that there is to be a high-level meeting here at the u.n. general assembly this week.

the five permanent members plus germany will meet to discuss iran's uranium enrichment program. that tops off a week that could, in fact, be full of breaking because president obama is coming, as you said. we're waiting at arrival of the new iranen president. everyone is looking forward to see what he has to say. and over above that for syria, chemical weapons crisis dominating everything and president obama and secretary john kerry will have their work cut out for them on that issue. and israel and palestine are having negotiations over peace and libya and pakistan making

nice over kashmir. there is to be a high-level meeting between u.s. and iran here this week. >> john, a month ago none of this seemed possible. now you're talking about a meeting between u.s. and iran and the chemical weapons agreement in syria. how might this meeting between secretary state kerry and his counterpart in iran affect that video? >> what's happening is the interests of the united states and iran in the region are aligning. you're absolutely right. it's unthinkable that this could happen, but here we are, the united states with a number of thorny issues in the middle east that it needs help sorting out, and guess who can help sort most of it out: the iranians. why the iranians are lining up with u.s. policy, sanctions. sanctions are now really beginning to bite. the iranians know it will be

easier for them to deal with a democratic administration than a republican one potentially in 2016. they also don't want to risk riots on the streets because people are unhappy with the way their economy is going, so they're acting now. they see a chance, and they're acting now. the answer to your question is one of the things that the iranians might offer the americans behind the scenes and talks that we'll never ever hear about is the chance to sort out the syrian situation, and to do other things in the region that would help u.s. foreign policy. >> thank you very much, john, joining us live from the u.n. while the president is in new york. there is another political showdown that is looming in washington. this is the battle over the budget. once again a government shutdown is on the horror rye done. congress has until october 1st to reach a deal to dodge any interpretation t inten

government services. >> reporter: they linked a defunding of what they term obamacare. even the president uses that term these days, something that is going nowhere in the senate and something that the president said he would veto. where are we? harry reid will take the floor of the senate. he will open for business. he'll say mean things about the republicans in the house of representatives, and mitch mcconnell will d do look wise, this is mind-numbing procedure that we'll go through this week. we may see some old fashioned filibusterers along the way. but the senate led by democrats and harry reid, they're going fund the government but they'll take out the linkage to fund the

affordable care act, send it back to the house and at that point we may have a day or less until next tuesday when the government shuts down unless congress can agree on how to move forward on funding. it will be all up to john bane for decide if he wants to push something through, and sort of rolit through the caucus. >> my mother-in-law wants to know what happens to her social security check if that deal is not reached by october 1st. so what will a shutdown mean? >> take my virtual hand and we'll lead you there what we're doing here. first of all they're talking about congressional spending. the congress has to approve the probations bill or there is a shutdown. they have approved zero. but that is the minority of government spending. the majority of government

spending the congress doesn't have to vote on every year. what is left? social security checks will continue to be cut and send. but if you want to go to a social security office or if you need help at a particular office you could be shut out. high visibility symbols, park services and museum here in washington would likely be shut down. military pay would likely go forth, but remember taxes are still coming in. tax revenues are still coming in to the government. the government just isn't authorized to spend them. military pay would go through, but would defense department civilians be paid? no one wants to walk into that abyss, but can they avert it before next tuesday? >> mike viqueira, joining us live from washington. a ruling in egypt to suspend all activities and associations of the muslim brotherhood. the court decision coming two months after the brotherhood

supported mohamed morsi was ousted and replaced by a military back interim government. it did not ban the muslim brotherhood as an political party, though, and an appeal is expected. the captain of the costa concordia may not be lucky. and as unemployment rates are dropping some workers are still finding it hard to find work.

but it's because a lot of workers have dropped out all together. a lot of them are older workers. here are their stories. >> i'm joy. >> reporter: displaced workers share their resumé. >> i'm a training and development manager. if it lives, breathes walks or talks i drained it. >> i'besides being un unemployed these club members share something else. most have been out of work for over six months. for workers over 50 years ha has-rig gus. last year the unemployment for workers between the ages of 55 and 64 was nearly 55 weeks. for workers in their 20s it was just a little over 30 weeks.

the job search for older workers is taking longer because they have not updated their skills or looked for work for years. there is a third, age bias. >> are they going to stay very long? are they going to have less energy? are they going to have cost too much? healthcare costs are going to be too much? >> the unemployment rate for older worse is a full point higher than the national unemployment rate. part time work at a library is helping barbara stay afloat since she lost her position in the healthcare industry. she's over 55 and says she could retire early but doesn't want to because she would get less from her glen that's a horrible thing

to think of because i'll get two-thirds of what i worked for. that's a hard decision to make. >> we're here to help you get that next job. >> reporter: back at the job club they encourage them to stay positive, update their wardrobe to look younger. >> i'm very optimistic. >> many in the job club think they'll eventually find work again, but they think it will take time and a much stronger economy before they do. >> typhoon usagi has been down graded to a tropical storm but not before having its way with the pacific slamming the philippines and taiwan, and now heads to hong kong and china.

>> it grew as a city because of its port but is vulnerable oh to the storms. it saw the worst flooding from this typhoon, storm surge and rainfall and a day late they were still flooded. this is china's deadliest typhoon of the year, and as the city tries to clean up after it, tens of thousands still don't have power. wind ripped roofs and trees littering the streets. >> this is the worst flood in 30 years. i've never seen such a big flood. >> the government gave us early warning of the typhoon. a lot of people were evacuated and cleared the water very quickly. >> congress the province hundreds of thousands are evacuated to higher ground keeping the death toll down but not the destruction. the massive clean up got under way on monday. there was little sight of relief

organization or the government. the phone company set up a free charge station. the markets are open to those with power, thousands of canceled flights and closed rail lines. but for the people of this city the holiday that left scars that will remain until next year. al jazeera, china. >> by way of perspective this storm was huge. >> meteorologist: 680 miles wide. that's the size of boston down into raleigh, north carolina. that storm has weakened immensely. it has just been categorized as a tropical storm. it will bring heavy rain to mainland china and gusting winds. but luckily within the next couple of days that rain will

subside quite a bit. we're talking about quite a bit of rain across colorado. the rain has pushed to the east and we're looking at snow across the colorado rockies. so that's in the highest elevations about 9,500 feet. now because of the cold front pushing through, temperatures are actually a little bit less then this should be this time of year. 68 degrees in denver. a bit of a chil chilly start toe day and chilly across the northeast where temperatures in the 50's and by the end of the day we expect to climb to 66 degrees. bright sunshine on the way to new york city here today. we have a couple of clouds floating across the skies, across up state new york into pennsylvania but we're not expecting any rainfall because high pressure is in control. it will get warmer in new york tuesday into wednesday and really on into thursday as that area of high pressure continues to build. we have great sunshine on the

way. can't say the same across floor. we have a stalled out frontal boundary that will bring rain all along panama city, right around the miami area, so i really want folks on the roadway there is to use precaution. some of these storms could contain a few damaging winds. torrential rain will cause a bit of a pile up in terms of the wet weather on the roadways. again, use precaution if you're traveling. >> thank you very much. the captain of the costa concordia is in court today. prosecutors say the captain steered the luxury liner into the rocky coast and then
