libyan government demands an explanation after the u.s. raid today was another bloody day in egypt. street battles left 51 people

dead. most of the fighting is between security force and people supporting ousted president home morsi. people were stopped by police. they used tear gas and guns. people were celebrating the 40th anniversary of egypt's war with israel. a report comes from cairo. we can't name our correspondent because of security concerns. >> reporter: downtown cairo on oh sunday. a day for sel for celebrating tl military. this is north of tahrir square. across cairo, protestors took to the streets. some tried to march on the square. a symbol of resistance from january 2011. on the the surrounding streets, security was tight. in places, police used tear gas to tkrol crowds.

contributor for "time" magazine and author of liberation square inside the egyptian revolution and a rebirth of a nation. you're in cairo. you were outside at some of these clashes, what was it like today? >> well, it was very intense. the areas that i visited. inside tahrir square was different mood it was pro-military party. when you got to the edgeing of tahrir square, that's where the violence took place. you have the muslim brotherhood coming in from multiple directions. in most places a distance away from tahrir. the team they saw mostly were interesting because you had the army and the police not only working together but those two working with civilians. young guys who hate -- [ inaudible ] they were between

these young angry guys and security forces. i wasn't expecting that level of coordination between those groups and they were all working to repel the brotherhood. >> why you think we continue to see this violence in egypt? is there any movement between these two sides? >> reporter: well, i think there's not any desire on earth side to comdesire on eitherside. you find on those voices who try to seek reconciliation or bring them together are ignored or shouted down. there was one very clear example of this in late september. a very prominent member of the muslim brotherhood. issued an arabic language apology to oh the nation. some of the mistakes they made

when mohammed morsi was in power. he was rejected from both sides. brotherhood distanceed him from making that statement. the military arrested him. no one is listening to the people who are trying to find middle ground here. >> -p the violence continues. i wanted to get your thout yourn this concern. since today was obviously a day to mark the anniversary of the 40-year war with israel and a day supposed to pay tribute to the armed the forces. do you feel that there is this sense that is basically running the country that he might actually make a run for president? well, there's been a lot of debate about that. and he's not the only military name that's being mentioned a -z special candidate. general ahmad who is retired and

in afghanistan, about 20 candidates are in the running for president. this will be the first independent vote without direct foreign assistance. >> candidates also face serious threats from the taliban. both say they know they will be attack. their elections will go ahead.
