we're going end up at an economic disadvantage. but if we continue to invest the way we've been investing over the past 40 years, we're also going to be at an economic disadvantage because we simply can't afford to replicate what we've done in the past. >> we have this tweet. she said, i'm willing to pay a higher gas tax if i know that dedicated tax money is used for that purpose. the government finds ways to use new taxes for different purposes. george says, as long as big oil is buying out business, there will be no solution at all. and until the government kit quits buying patents. and i'm going use a quote from former secretary transportation ray lahood. transportation is always about the future. there are no republican roads or

democratic bridges. is there a bipartisan solution moving forward. >> i wish there was a solution that made sense for everybody. i think back 50 years ago when the u.s. was investing tremendously in the national highway system it did seem like there was bipartisan consensus about what transportation was right for the country. today we have a situation where democrats are primarily concentrated in our cities and republicans are concentrated in the suburbs. the cities and suburbs need different needs different types of transportation systems. >> hey don, a lot of tweets that was just read show a lack of trust in the american public in terms of where their tax money is actually going to go. is there an argument to be made if you're going to include government in transportation, and infrastructure building, that maybe it be done at the state or local level where there

is more control? >> absolutely. we're big proponents of that, having it done on the state level. i guarantee you, someone is going to have the best one and the other 49 will begin to replicate that. that's what we need rather than one size fits all. that's what we've got with our healthcare system where we're having one website that doesn't work. if we had 50 different website, i guarantee you most of them would be up by now. >> i have a concern about the one size fits all as well. one size fits all over the last 40 years has been the automobile. the automobile simply doesn't work for a lot of people. senior citizens after a certain age they cannot drive. people who are disabled. >> people in high density areas. >> our wounded veterans, and people under the age of 16. we've decided that vast numbers of our people are going to be excluded.
12:59 pm
and the auto only solution we're simply taxing people saying you must buy a car. you must buy insurance and i consider that to be a tax as well. i think that's why people have fallen out of love with the automobile, and they're moving to the inner cities, and that's where we're seeing a boon in the economic charge in our country. >> it's so great to hear so many different opinions . thanks to all of you. great discussion tonight. until next time, waj and i will see you online. ♪ hello, and welcome to the
