>> welcome to al jazeera america, i'm thomas drayton, good to have you with us. >> we begin with a school shooting. police in ros wall say a seventh grader walked into a gym and opened fire. hundreds attended a vigil in roswell. an 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were surrounded at the bereneder middle school. the victims were airlifted to hospital. the 11-year-old boy is in critical condition. the 13-year-old girl is stable. the suspect, a 12-year-old boy, is under arrest. his identity has not been released because of his age. a stupid who witnessed the shooting said the suspect snuck the shotgun into school in a musical instrument case. we'll have more on that shooting throughout the morning. >> the obama administration is responding to critical comments

from a top israeli official aimed at secretary of state john kerry. it began 2010 the israeli defence minister described john kerry of being oscessive and messionic. the state department is calling the comments offensive and inappropriate. >> there's no sign of a breakthrough in the latest round of israeli palestine peace talks. the israeli defense minister says the rose is a west of time, blaming the u.s. secretary of state. according to israel's largest newspaper, moshe yaalon said during a private conversation: >> as for the talks, moshe yaalon was just as dismissive:

carolina where he expect to announce an initiative to spur the manufacturing initiative. the way it was phrased raised is lot of eyebrows. >> i have a pen and a phone. i can use the pen to sign executive orders and stake executive actions and administrative actions to move the vault forward in helping make sure our kids get the best education, and that our businesses get support they need to make sure that people are getting the skills to get the jobs. >> as you might expect republicans reacted in may saying they can't go around congress when they feel the need. the president says he will use the pen to sign executive orders to get some of what he wants. >> the congress will have additional work in the course of the next few weeks.

it's important they do something about unemployment insurance. >> last week there was hope. this week a quagmire, stuck in the senate sandbox. stuck over procedure to move forward, over amendments, how they should be paid for. the upshot is 1.3 million americans put off long-term unemployment insurance benefits at the end of last year - the number is growing, increasing each day 1.5 million off of long-term unemployment benefits and the senate is bogged down in the usual gridlock. there were a couple of votes - how long should the extension last. should it be paid for. this is the senate. the house has not tackled that. it looks like it will be a long slog. two votes failed in the senate. the white house had this reaction:

of flooding over the last couple of weeks. 32 are dead. 46,000 have been evacuated in this area. up towards the philippines, this is the same island that was affected by the typhoon in butar city. 20,000 people have been evacuated. the death toll has been less, at about 23. unfortunately the monsoon season is still in effect and will continue all the way through parts of february. that will be a big problem there. >> across the united states we are watching the next winter outbreak across the central and northern plains, bringing cold air for many. across the north-west we are getting a break and we have a lot of avalanche warnings. over the next day for seattle we will see a high of 51 degrees. over the next couple of days the rain will be out of the picture. we'll see temperatures sustained. overnight lows reaching to 35.
