>> data security is a hot button issue in washington. millions of americans having their information stolen over the holidays. today congress set to hear from the secret service and other consumer protection agencies on recent security breaches at target, neiman marcus john terrett is on hand. >> they are also charged with going after financial crime, and that dovetails very nicely with the secret service. william noonan has done a lot of work on cyber-crime in the past and he's going to testify that a lot of these recent brake ins that you were talking about del are really just a piece of

decade long piece of cybercriminals breaking into retail. she's going to make the point in her testimony to the senate banking committee that what you really need, she's going to reiterate the point that what you really need is congressional support for legislation that will strengthen cybe cyber-secu. this whole event is expected to last a couple of hours, gets underway at about 3:00 in the afternoon. >> what are lawmakers hopeful about accomplishing with these hearings? >> there are other committee meetings coming up later in the week. i think what they're going to do is getting bank being, judiciary and commerce on the same page, realize how important this cyber-crime if is and how possible it is to actually stop some of this stuff from

happening. now eric holder is the attorney general. last week he gave evidence to the senate judiciary committee and in that hearing he was asked about this latest charge, the neiman marcus and the michael's and here is what he had to say. >> i can confirm that the department is investigating the breach involving the united states retailer target. and we are working to find not only the perpetrators of these sorts of data breaches but also any individuals and groups who exploit those retailers via credit card fraud. >> reporter: smart cards, the technology exist major u.s. companies like visa and american express have set a target date of 2015 to import that kind of

data here. >> thank you john. are 25 organizations close to governor chris christie have until today to reply to subpoenas. although some have received an extension members of christie's staff ordered several lanes of the george washington bridge to be closed, those lanes leading to the town of fort lee, new jersey. in georgia, a case close to that of trayvon martin. michael dunn must prove he acted in self-defense when he opened fire over loud music. natasha guinane is there. >> thanks to letters he sent to

relatives from jail, i have a better case of self defense than george zimmerman and if george zimmerman were acquitted in his trial it would bode well for him. now keep in mind with a stand your ground defense a weapon need not be present. the defendant must only prove he or she had a reasonable fear that his or her life was in danger. dunn shot 52 a van in 2012. he told his lawyer, i have never been so scared in my life. they were threatening to kill me. >> do we know what the response of the parents were? >> jordan's mother joined trayvon martin's mother last yore on capitol hill.

they testified before a senate judiciary committee on the impact stand your ground laws had on the nation. actually prevailed in a civil suit against dunn. they sued him because of defamatory comments he made against their sop. they are committed no matter what comes out in this trial to safeguarding the reputation of jordan davis. >> natasha as we learned in the trayvon martin case, jury collection can mean everything. what do we know about the jury selection so far? >> not much. it's very slow-going but the jurors have been told they are going to be sequestered. keep in mind, locally there has been an inordinate amount of coverage on this case already. they were told the trial will take about two weeks. you talk about strategy and jury selection, i talked to a,

housewife or mother on that jury who has never touched a gun, let alone played eyes on a gun. if i'm on the defense i want a juror who owns a gun and is very committed to the idea of self-defense. >> natasha guinane, joining us from jacksonville, florida. thank you very much. an inmate who escaped from a michigan prison last night, michael elliot serving term for manslaughter. bisi onile-ere, joining us. do we know how he escaped? >> we do know he maneuvered over a fence outside that prison and dug a hole and that's how he got out. i am told he was wearing a white kitchen outfit, that's how he was able to blend in with the

snow and get can outside security. soon after he got out of prison he car jacked and abducted a woman by using a box cutter as well as scissors. and -- or i'm sorry a hammer and from there they drove to a town that was right there on the michigan-indiana border. and from there, when they got there the woman she managed to break free unharmed. and she also called 911. but when that happened, police arrived, but by the time that they got there the suspect had fled and we just learned that within the last hour that the vehicle that this man was in, it was a red jeep ford liberty 2004, that was found in a town in indiana, there is no sign of a suspect. i'm told the school district in that area has been put on lock down. del. >> so with that information is it safe to assume that authorities are looking for him in indiana or that he might be

someplace else? >> right now it seems like they're focusing on that area, that town in northern indiana where that vehicle was found. right now, in michigan in the prison facility where he was staying, investigators are interviewing some of his inmates as well as going through some of his letters and other things in his cell to try to figure out exactly where he plans to head now. >> bisi onile-ere, bisi, thank you very much. tough new regulations in louisiana are soon to take effect, this in a state that already has some of the toughest abortion laws anymore. ben lemoine has the story. >> an ob-gyn clinic for 25 years, with services for women including abortions. >> it's the patient's choice not

vitaly klitschko. >> northern syrian city of aleppo, shows syrian government helicopters dropping barrel bombs. more than 150 people dead in just three days of attacks. those barrel bombs are crude devices usually a container packed with scrap metal. president bashar al-assad's forces and rebel groups. meanwhile millions are fleeing the fighting in syria. waning up in neighboring lebanon, education for the children who are force ed to live there. reporting from lebanon. >> here in one of the scattered refugee communities, in northern lebanon children are struggling oget to school, to get access to education. that's because there are hundreds of thousands of syrian

children who cannot attend school that is run by the lebanese government. the government cannot accommodate hundreds of thousands of new students, it would have to build new schools to allow syrian children to go to school while they are waiting to return to their country. here a private charity has built a school for the students. this school runs two shifts and around 500 students get to go to school and get an education here. they are among the luckier children in lebanon, the syrian refugee children who get to go to school. but the government says, the funding is very little and very inconsistent. they often don't find the money to buy fuel to heat the classrooms. that's why you see the children wearing their winter clothes and hats and as well they don't have enough textbooks. sometimes they photocopy the textbooks and sometimes there isn't enough money to give all

overlaid by incongruously dramatic music. microphones, a printer, laptops, other tools of the trade. al jazeera english's director of news, has condemned the video, saying, if it came out by mistake, the professionalism of the prosecution process is called into question. they were also not operating in cairo secretly. the team openly filed several packages and live reports prior to their arrest. this is not an issue of accreditation. them not having full paperwork from the authorities in no way justifies their ongoing incarceration and treatment. they should be let go forthwith. especially since the 2011 revolution that saw president hosne mobarak ousted from power.

fugitive murderer michael elliot. police are still looking for elliot who is considered armed and descrel dangerous. an autopsy planned for oscar winner philip seymour hoffman. found inside his new york city apartment. officials say he died of a drug overdose. the dow down 264 points this following triple digit losses on friday. the blue chips are now down more than a thousand points in the new year. and first new yorkers were exciteabout the super bowl now they're worried about the snow. this is snow falling in new york. it actually is starting to taper off but i think a lot of people are saying, that wasn't yesterday. >> that wasn't yesterday, that's today, that could be two days from now. >> although denver says too bad it wasn't yesterday.

another snow falling on the northeast, one after the other and this is another one possibly next weekend. let's focus on this though, very intense snow and rain coming down that rain-snow line right along new york. this is a little warmer storm here. the snow's a little heavier wet and slushy on the roadways. it is clearing out by after 4:00, 5:00, it's done. we'll look at the visibility and the two temperatures coming down. down to a half miel in new york, climbing in philadelphia. heaviest snow from new york to boston, these numbers will start to climb as that snow intensity gets a little bit lighter. temperatures at the freezing mark so a lot of slush on the roadways. a lot of the treated surfaces are doing okay with this temperature right about freezing, but still slushy. temperatures are dropping overnight. watch for some slick spots on
