>> divide in the ukraine is growing in the west parliament appointing a new prime anyonester and forming a coalition government. but in the east, the protestor are flying the russian flag. the former president viktor yanukovich is saying he's going to speak out on friday. nick, the tables are turned, the opposition is taking control and they are being opposed. >> yeah, this is a discussion in the south, this is a place that has always opposed kiev and leaning to the west in europe. today we are seeing a new government being formed in the building parliament 500 feet behind me. so is south it is a very different scene and the opposition is taking control in the parliament and raised the

russian flag and there is a big concern about this. it has always been separate and not wanted to be part of the independent ukraine. so to a certain extent this was expected and not representing the rest of the government. but the new government is saying it is a real threat to the unity of the country and that is why people are concerned here and in the west a lot of concern from the u.s. and nato is expressing concerns with russia being involved. >> nick, what can the government in kiev do at this point in time? >> not a whole lot, del, they are four hours old. so what the acting president has said is that, look, this is a threat to the government. we are going to send in the military into the parliament building, and we are not going

to allow that region to separate itself from the ukraine. but really, it is far from here physically and emotionally and mentally and so a lot of the people on the ground there are very much pro russian anding to the east and people the people here looking to the west. everyone is trying to convince russia to step down the military force or presence along the border there as well. >> it is becoming an international controversy and how involved are the western powers at this point? >> well, i this is exactly what we have been talking about in this area, the u.s. and russia talking on the phone, apparently secretary of state john kerry spoke the the russian foreign minister and saying we need to talk about the area together and we have lots of things to talk

about, iran and syria, but we are focussed on this today and the u.s. wants to give a chance to the government in kiev and give a chance to people that just have taken the power and independence square is not burning, the u.s. wants this government to have a chance without the military intervention and without a threat to it and only then can this government focus on the extreme problems that face this country not only this unity that we are talking about politically but economically, they need 15, $20 billion by the sum tore pay the bills or defaulting and they have a lot on their hands without worried about the province to the south. >> they are going to meet with the reporters but where the viktor yanukovich? >> well, apparently the great hunt is over, indeed if it is

true he's giving a press conference in southern russia. we have talked about this and looking for him, apparently according to local reports out of moscow, he escaped a southern town and arrived to moscow and staying at a hotel and this is statement suggesting yes, he's in moscow and asking for the support and protection from the russian government and he's going to speak to the press for the first time tomorrow morning to say he's still the president of this country flarankly the country is moving on without him. >> thousands of documents from the state of the former president, viktor yanukovich, found and dumped in the river and people are hoping that the information will help build a

case against him. >> it is the first time returning since the violent crack down on the protestor. victoria is a member of the self-defense units. >> i won't forget the faces of the friends facing the police. we had no weapons just stones. i didn't think that the police would kill ewe cranians. viktor yanukovich is gone and we are learning more. >> just before leaving the estate, the aides through the documents into the river. there are people diving into the freezing cold trying to retrieve all of the documents they can. >> about 40,000 documents are moved to a guest house by a

group of journalists and sifting through them and making them available online for everyone to see. many more are drying in the sauna. some of the documents reveal a lavish life style and taste for expensive furniture. others detail transactions through a web of shadowed companies and a bank belonging to viktor yanukovich's son. >> we are so excited and then admonished and shocked by the numbers and the names we found in the documents and the company's names in the documents. >> per happens the most shocking is this one, to the extent he was willing to go to crack down on the protestor. deplaying 22,000 police and special forces and electricity, water and telecommunications to

be shutdown in the surrounding areas and protestor engaged into a battle on the edges of the square while the trade building was raided. that's where victoria and the defense unit was stationed and she and others hope that the documents make a solid case against the former leader. >> those well noun knew trags labels are about to get a makeover. today first lady and head of the f.d.a. is putting out updates to the system and this is part of the initiative to help families make better food choices. what are some of the changes going to be announced today? >> they are the food labels of the future. the big change is that the

calorie counts are larger and bold. it is showing much sugar added to the product. now michele obama in announcing this today, right now you need a calculator to read the labels and this is making the changes. here is what she had to say. parents deserve to have the information they need to make healthy choices for their kids. and this isn't a particularly radical idea. in fact, it seems obvious, but it is nearly impossible to get the most basic facts about the food we buy for our families. >> now, another big change would be in the serving size. as you know, if you buy a pack, the serving size is small, and they are going to change the serving sizes to reflect how people actually eat.

these are just proposed rules. there is a 90 day comment period and the f.d.a. takes the comments and issuing a rules and the companies have two years to make the changes to the labels. >> what impacts will the changes have on the people, other than me that eat a little less. >> well, you are in good company, del, it turns out 50% of an aduluths look at the labels and rely on them. the big change is how the food is put together. in 2006, the companies added the transfats to the labels. >> thank you, lisa. >> president obama plans to dive back into the middle east process and meeting with israeli prime minister on monday at the white house and they want a plan in place by april.

mike, what is the current status of the negotiations between the palestinians and the israelis. >> president obama and secretary of state john kerry is pressing ahead and trying to do what has proven to be a bridge too far and stretching back generations and that is a peace agreement in the middle east. secretary of state john kerry 11 times back and forth to the regions and trying to brocker a peace meeting and setting a time line, a debted line, if you will, by the end of april for a frame work of an agreement, and the two state solution that the administration is behind the palestinians and the israelis. president obama said that the 1967 border should be the bay situation for the two state solution and that is a lot of

back and forth between that time. on monday the president is hosting the prime minister from israel and they meet and speak frequently and they are going to push him to the agreement that is set for the end of april and coming to the agreement on the frame work and president obama is immediating with the other side, the leader of the palestinians. time is ticking. this is quite an issue to say the least. there is hope contrary to a lot of expectations to reach an agreement by the end of april. that is very much up in the air. >> thank you. we are following breaking news out of washington, we are receiving reports that attorney general has been taken to the hospital as suffering from shortness of breath.

he felt faint during a meeting with the staff and taken to the hospital as a precaution. he's said to be resting and in good condition according to the statement from the staff. we'll have more on the story as it is developing. >> the former captain of the concordia returning to the ship today. the ship crashed back in 2012. the captain is accused of abandoning the ship and manslaughter. >> when we return, today is a day of action for the al jazeera colleagues that obtained in egypt. one of the journalist sitting in jail is peter and wrote this letter from prison and being held there. here is a portion of it.

world and hank johnson is voicing his support on the floor of the congress this morning. >> i sent a letter signed by 15 members of the congress urging the secretary of state to take immediate action to secure the release of the journalists in egypt. it is important to remind their leadership and all of the world leaders for a need for free press. free those journalists, a free society requires a free press. i yield back. >> in mexico, people are putting down the cameras. in berlin they are demanding the charges be dropped as well n. africa, marching to have their voices heard to have the colleagues released.

>> they come here from different segments of the media. they are all united in the call for the egyptian authorities to release the al jazeera staff. i have the president of the union of the journalists, who is tell us why this rally is necessary. >> well, i think we are organized this rally for the kol colleagues who are detained and the continuing detention is abuse of the freedom of the media and therefore calling on the egyptian authorities to immediately release our colleagues without condition. we felt this is part of punty on port of the authority and journalism and journalist should

and get it out. >> for the past two years taking parted in the after school activities like boxing for the at risk youth. >> boxing is a martial sport and art, and it is a great opportunity to teach people discipline, team work, commitment, and positive anger expression. >> to accomplish that, the counsellors work with 7-12th grateders to work on the skills. skills that help reduce violence and antisocial behavior. a study revealed that a large portion of the homicides are chicago are involved with ir rational behavior. >> it is using group exercises

and role playing and practicing impulse control. we see what violence is like all over the world and the core or root of it it is about people making a decision that their personal promise or believe or situation is just as important as another person to breathe. >> it is working. bam participation reduced the crime arrests. a we followed up in the following year and improved the school engagement and less likely to be in the schools of the juvenile system. >> it is catching the attention of washington. >> these are exceptional young men, i couldn't be proud of them. >> last year a group of the students sat in a counselling circle with president obama. >> it is historical.

building is behind me here and it is the parliament and above it the russian flags are flying. just a few miles to the north, 7 russian carriers are driving through the streets and saying it is just exercises and very inflammatory for the folks in kiev and seeing those pictures coming up in the media. this became independent in 1954 from russia. the city north from here 1978. the russian black sea fleet is anchored here. i spoke to a person here and he's saying that viktor yanukovich doesn't matter any more. >> he's no longer our president. we all know that. because he's a criminal. he's considered throughout the world as a criminal.

there is no excuse for ordering your troops to shoot people dead with the sniper rifles. >> viktor yanukovich is not feeling that way and he's saying he's remaining the president of ukraine and we are going to hear from him tomorrow at a press conference and he's saying what is happening is illegal and he's calling on the people in the east to support him. >> jennifer, what are the residents saying about the protests that are taking place there? >> you know, a lot of people are sympathetic, this is a time to take their own power. the parliament behind me voted to have a rep referendum in may.

what that means, that means we don't know, they have their own parliament and prime minister but the parliament folks behind us, we don't know who is in that building, they have voted to dismiss the entire government. they are trying to take control. we are seeing a mirror of what happened in kiev. they want to take power here and what kiev does is a challenge for the government in kiev. >> jennifer, thank you very much. >> we want to thank you for watching al jazeera america. the stream is next. we leave you these images coming in from around the world.
