lebanon fighters to flee to lebanon. >> what russia has done is wrong. a heated exchange at the u.n. russia and the u.s. trade insults in relation to the at the end of the daying over of crimea. -- the take over of describingia. >> australia is investigating two objects found in the indian ocean, that could be the debris, of the missing malaysia airlines flight. these are the satellite images according to the maritime safety authority. additional planes and ships have been deployed to search the air, 2,500km south-west of perth. flight mh370 went missing on 8 march after departing to beijing. >> the australian maritime safety authority received information based on satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search.
5:02 am
following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two objects related to the search have been identified. we must keep this in mind, the ask of locating the object will be difficult, and it may turp out that they are not related to the ascertain for flight mh370. >> nicole johnston is live in malaysia in kuala lumpur. first to sydney australia and to andrew thomas. a big day in australia, andrew, the prime minister saying potentially important benefits, and the maritime authorityies saying credible sightings here. >> that's right. it was about six hours ago now that tony abbott stood up in parliament and announced this potentially major development in the search for the plane.
5:03 am
the fact that he stood up was in itself significant. he used the word credible when he talked about the objects. they had been spotted by satellite of the indian ocean area where the malaysian maritime authority has been searching. all the bits of the puzzle came together to make him think it was potentially an important development. two hours after the prime minister spoke, a press conference was given by the australian maritime search authority, and this is a little of what they said there. >> the object are relatively ipp distinct on the imagery. i don't profess to be an expert, bout those who are, indicate they are credible sightings. the indication to me is of objects that are a reasonable size, and are probably awash with water bobbing up and down
5:04 am
out of the surface. >> can you give us any idea of the size, like the size of a basketball or a seat kushon or much larger. >> much larger than that. the largest image i have seen is assessed as being 24 metres. there's another that's smaller than that, and is a number of images in the general area of the biggest one. >> that's a credible sighting of a large object, but in a massive ascertain area that we are talking about. what will the search now involve? >> well, when the objects were spotted, and it's unclear at the moment when the photographs were taken. there's a date on the photographs that says march the 16th, so four days ago now. if that's the case and they had the photos and they've analysed them, that may not be right, they may have been more recent. when the photo was taken, they knew where the objects were.
5:05 am
the trouble ishat the sea is a moving item. the water moves around. the wave moves things. what they are doing at the moment is sending the search planes, one that has been searching in the narrow area. three more will take is it in terms on a ship pattern to go to the area and search. whether the objects are still where they were when the photo was taken is hard to say, that's what will be playing out in the next few hours. this is a distance of 2,500 from the australian coast. it takes four hours for the search planes to get there and they have fuel for two hours before turning back to shore. a lodgistical nightmare when it comes to searching the area. ships on the way, there's a commercial vessel close to the area. that has been diverted and will be around the area now, and an australian naval vessel has been
5:06 am
redirected to the area, but it will take days before that boat arrives. if there are objects to be found, if they are in connection with the missing airliner, it's that naval vessel that will bring them on board and back to shore. i must add, we don't know yet whether it is debris from the missing plane. >> that's andrew thomas joining us from sydney, australia. >> while malaysian authorities are meeting australian counterparts, here is what the acting transport minister in malaysia said earlier. >> aircraft and vessels are there, you know how huge the area is >> reporter: how long will it take? >> every lead is a hope, we are conscious and want to verify, corroborate it. >> reporter: have you seen the image yet? >> let me meet the australians. >> crossing live to nicole johns ston, a brief statement.
5:07 am
this is a lot of information to digest for malaysian authorities. >> yes, that's the only thing we've had on the record. in the next 30 minutes the daily press briefing at the media center in kuala lumpur will be held and we'll hear an official response from authorities about the participation sighting. the malaysian prime minister spoke to australia's prime minister. they have been well and truly informed as to what was going on. the statement about the phone call was reserved and measured. highlighting that they don't know whether the two objects belong to the missing plane. malaysia is playing it safe. >> and, nicole, malaysia has come under so much criticism,
5:08 am
haven't they, for the handling of the investigation. will the australian findings, do you think, take pressure off them? >> no doubt today is really taking some of the heat off the malaysian authorities. they had a difficult day on wednesday, with two chinese women coming to the press center. they were very upset, they tried to protest. the security guards didn't handle it well, bundling them into a room, and they received criticism for that. there was a media scrum, so it was a tough day for them. in the end the malaysian authorities had to come out saying that they regretted what happened in they'll investigate it. all the interpretation is on az, which is leading the search along with indonesia and it eased some of the pressure of the malaysian authorities. no doubt they are continuing their own investigation and search. they've been saying that they
