4:01 pm
>> at least 18 people are missing after a massive land slide outside of seattle. they are trying to dig out the survivors that are heard under the debris. we are downstream with more on all of this, have the res kies reached the trapped people? >> no, they have not. that is the bad news here today. complete devastation to the east, upstream on the north fork of the river, jonathan, what we are hearing from the first responders if they have not heard the voices of the people they were hearing last night. so far today they are not hearing the voices crying for help. take a look at what happened, this is a square mile of what
4:02 pm
came down aross the hills and on to the highway, a state highway, blocked a half mile, a quarter mile, half mile of it and at least six homes were destroyed and the building debris mixd with the trees and the mud and rock, a complete mess. a square mile of mud coming down the hill. the governor was here and viewing the area from the air and here is what he had to say at the briefing. >> there is not a vertical stick standing within a square mile or a million cubic yards of slurry at the moment. it is just that fact that everything within that path has been levelled and that is something i have never seen before. >> so the rescue efforts are continuing and nobody is brought out to safety today and the
4:03 pm
crews are continuing to do what they can from the land and from the air at this point. >> allen, how concerned are the rescuers about the victims? >> well, very concerned. with every hour, of course, the urgency gets greater. they are not able to get in there physically to the heart of the slide area and hearing the voices, and what the governor and what local responders say it is fluid and shifting and it is dangerous for those going on foot. >> is this xhorn in this part of the country, those landslides? >> we have had a lot of rain, just two inches shy of what we get for the entire month of march and the rainfall to the
4:04 pm
steep slopes. there have been a couple similar to this in the past ten or 15 years here. very dangerous and they are worried about sending the human resources into the area. >> the number one priority is responder safety. we have a huge square mile of mud flow and it is like quick sand and extremely fluid and it is moving. we suspect there's people out there, but it is far too dangerous to get responders out there on that mud flow. >> there's not a vertical stick standing within a square mile and perhaps a million cubic yards of slurry at the moment and just that fact that everything within that path is levelled and that is something i have certainly never seen before. >> there's also concern right
4:05 pm
now about minor flooding upstream from the blockage of the river and the possibility of flooding downstream when that thing breaks lose. upstream of the blockage and downstream people are told to be weary of where they are and where the river is. >> allen, live for us in washington, thank you. >> and now turning with more on the weather, as mentioned a lot of rain out there in the pa sich civic northwest. >> yes, it is over a month's worth of rain in the last couple weeks alone. they certainly don't need more rainfall right now. today is dry, on into monday it is dry and tuesday cloudy and bringing in a storm and 2-3 inches of rainfall. this was a gradual event that
4:06 pm
occurred. the rain certainly contributed to the landslide. we have to deal with the rain throughout this month and next month as well. now elsewhere across the country heavy rainfall across the southeast, most of that rain is pushing across the i-10 corridor to eastern georgia and it is pushing off a shore and ushering in the chilly air to the north and portions of the midwest into the northeast and temperatures are going to fall as well. 15-20 degrees below normal and cold across the midwest today and east coast tomorrow. >> thank you. texas is trying to maintain the oil spill, a barge carrying nearly a million gallons of oil collided with a ship. 160,000 gallons of oil could have leaked into the bay. now to brandon who is in texas and watching the story there,
4:07 pm
and brandon, what is the latest? >> people responsible for cleaning up the oil is calling it a true mess. it is 50 miles from houston, outside toward the gulf of mexico. 90,000 feet of booms are deployed into the water to protect the coastline. at this time, you have state, federal, and nonprofits working together to clean up spilled oil and protect the wild life. this area is a popular bird habitat and fearing the impact on the birds nesting in the area. u.s. coast guard is monitoring the area. at this time, the coast guard is saying that concentrations are dete detected. we are working on getting more information. >> this particular oil is a thick gooey marine fuel and how
4:08 pm
is that complicating the efforts to clean up the mess. >> well, the fuel leaked were gas, i am told in that situation it evaporates on the water, in this instance it needed to be cleaned up and further complicating the clean up of the mess. o thank you. >> states along the gulf of mexico seeing a number of oil spills and this is just the latest. in 1990 in the bay the energy room of a tanker caught on fire and leaked $4 million of light crude and taking 8 days to put out the fire. 6 million gallons spill during hurricane katrina and the explosion that killed 11 workers and created the worst oil spill
4:09 pm
in history and oil continued to leak from the sunken rig for two months and 4 million barrels of oil. >> now to crisis in ukraine, the russian's ambitions may be extending beyond the borders. there is a near that putin may try to take over the entire country, that is something that russia is denying. phil, a lot of speculations on what rush is what to, and what is left for ukraine to do but to respond? >> well, jonathan, there's not much they can do when it comes to crimea but veering up on the mainland ukraine and there is a growing concern that russian has designs beyond the crimea

peninsula and following the meetings with the ukrainian government here, they held the press conference in which strong language was used, including from republican senator from ne hampshire and the armed services committee and when returning to washington she's carrying the recommendation that u.s. beef up the support for the ukrainian armed forces. >> the ukrainian people will be the ones to decide their future but we can provide million taxpayer assistance, not only humanitarian assistance but assistance that can involve small arms, communications equipment, basic fuel, issues that we need uniform issues,
4:11 pm
things that the ukrainian military needs as it is rebuilding the damage that was done by president viktor yanukovich. >> now, also adding no intention or desire to be boots on the ground by the u.s. but language is coming on the very same day that a u.s. four star general with nato command in europe saying that they are deeply concerned and are monitoring a massing of russian troops along the ukrainian border and saying that the readiness and the scale and the size of the russian troops is so significant if they wanted to they could roll through this country all the way out of the western border and reconnect with a pro russian sliver of land where there is a russian territory and that is causing a great concern around
4:12 pm
the continent and back in the states, now the russians are saying they don't want to do that and they have no intentions to come to the mainland ukraine but tonight here in kiev they are monitoring the situation on the border and are beefing up the military and they have put their armed forces on high alert and right now, there is a sense within the government here that this is getting more and more serious and that this is an escalating situation and that crimea might be only the start of the crisis. >> a lot unfolding there. thank you, phil. >> going back to the oil spill in texas, we have on the phone with us right now first class petty officer randy kendrik from the coast guard and thank you for being with us. how far have you gotten on the clean up? >> we are making progress and
4:13 pm
today we removed all of the product that was on the damaged barge so the barge that was carrying 924,000 gallons of product, you know, we had one of the holes in the barge that was compromised and responding that the entire contents leaked. we have been able to remove all of the remaining product off that of that barge. >> so how much oil though actually leaked into the bay? >> it would be, we are responding as if it is the entire hold, 168,000 gallons and we were able to pump some of the oil out of the hold, and so lesdz than that amount, but the response is focussed as if the entire thing. that's the focus, as if the entire thing spilled and that is how we are responding and bringing in the assets to clean it up. >> o how long do you think it
4:14 pm
takes to clean up the oil that actually spilled into the water? >> well, it is definitely a significant spill. it's significant amount of oil in the water and we have tides coming in and out so as it moves around the focus is on finding that recoverable oil, oil as it is getting into the water there are different amounts of it and some is thicker and some a little sheen and unable to recover it. we are looking at the recoverable oil and protecting the environmental areas and areas nearby and trying to make sure everybody is staying safe. >> have you actually contained the oil that spilled into the water or still posing a threat to some of the wild life areas nearby? >> right, we have put boom, kind of a barrier around sensitive areas because it has not been
4:15 pm
contained. once it is that large of a spill and in the water, it is about recovering. >> if you can clarify for us how this even happened how did the ship and the barge collide with each other? >> that is a good question. it is under investigation. the coast guard and the national transportation safety board is investigating that. the unified command is protecting the environment and keeping the people safe, keeping the public safe and recovering this oil. >> okay, first class petty officer with the u.s. coast guard and thank you for your time today. >> no problem, thank you. >> now to the missing jet liner from malaysia, 8 planes flying over the indian ocean and covering ten thousand nautical miles and satellite photos, including new ones show objects

floating in the water and an approaching storm could interrupt the search this week. we are going to a pilot and expert on airplane security and todd, nice to see you. first to the thoughts on the new photo released by france and showing possible debris in the water, is this hopeful news for searchers? >> it is hopeful news for two reasons, first, the most thing you have another set of satellites out there and looking for this and other satellites that could chime in later and having a number of satellites is good. they are all in differentorbits and the hopeful sign it is finding something. not as good as having a ship looking at this. it is more likely this the ships and planes will actually get a sample of this or in the case of the aircraft a close photograph
4:17 pm
of it and that's going to be absolutely necessary to determine whether or not this is indeed part of the aircraft of sea trash. >> yesterday when we spoke about this you expressed concern that the chinese satellite picked up debris from the plane and there is a concern still now with another photo showing this? >> i have a concern, but again, this is why it is important to get more close up photographs or actual ships going up to next to it. it could be a variety of debris in close proximity. as i stated before, the individual object, or rather if the object is the entire object, it is too large to be from the aircraft, even an entire wing is not as large as the object
4:18 pm
sighted. should they get better data and detailed data it will resolve the issue. >> what happens if we don't get the answers, the crews cannot find more items in the water, what happens next with the efforts? >> well, we have to make the people involve going back to the drawing board and more efficient ways to search. the satellites are picking up things but as was pointed out earlier the satellites have a couple of days or in the case of the first photograph a four day lag between the time that the photograph is taken and released to the searchers, if they canlessen that time period, much better chance that the aircraft or the ships could find these objects. >> it is a huge search area and so far no firm clear signs of the missing airliner. todd curtis, thank you for the time. >> thank you for having me. >> we have more on the
