a step closer to confrontation as the new prime minister says he won't step down. ♪ and we start the news hour with reports that boka haram set out conditions for the release of nearly 300 school girls the nigeria armed group kidnapped them and we go there and we are hearing about a video and hearing about demands, what do you know? >> reporter: well the news agency first has obtained the video. we have not been able to view it for ourselves yet. we understand it's a 17-minute video in which girls are shown some of the abducted girls are shown on the video in seoul, veil, praying in an undisclosed
6:02 am
location and a man from the north viewed the video and said in the video the leader poses with some 100 girls from those abducted and says a couple of the girls are interviewed in the video and show clear signs of being afraid and the exact words are shay are shaking like leaves. and he made a clear demand and said some of the girls converted to islam. those who have not converted he said she willing to willing to trade-in exchange for the release of some of boko haram people who are in prisoners. >> reporter: do we have any idea of what numbers he is suggesting and when these prisoners were taken and from where? >> reporter: this information is not immediately clear to us.
6:03 am
of course because we have not had a chance to listen to the video. it is of course understood that the nigeria army had been battling boko haram fighters in the north and several fighters have been in jail and not just the north but in the capitol of bay boo jaw and last month a group of them were not far from the presidential palace and staged a prison break and a gun battle ensued in the capitol here. so there are boko haram fighters in detention it's just the numbers are not clear and the exact demand on how this exchange will happen is not clear. what is clear, jane, is of course this is the second video th that he appears on since the kidnapping of the girls and boastful of this attack and we can only imagine the distress this would add to the already
6:04 am
very upset families and the very shocked international community. jane. >> as you said that is sort of a suggestion of confidence that the group has that they can issue this video, that they can issue demands despite the fact there are so many groups, international groups along with a local nigerian army looking for them. >> reporter: indeed, jane, over the past few days the nigerian army sent to divisions and talking about thousands of nigerian soldiers according to the nigerian army on the ground in a search and rescue operation trying to hunt for them. it goes to show the extent of confidence this group has because also remember the nigerian airforce is involved in this and people have seen the airforce essentially carry it out in the area and as they carry this out there were still ongoing attacks by boko haram on
6:05 am
the ground and the level of confidence tells you what kind of group this is even with the arrival of international experts, law enforcement experts from the united states and the united kingdom. despite the fact for the past entire year there has been a $7 million bounty put by the united states on any information leading to boko haram leader and he somehow managed to operate with such impunity and said to be an illusive man and doesn't pay attention to movements and pressure coming from the international community or his own government. >> and bolstered by the catalog of disasters by the government, by the military saying they had them this their sights or not in their sights and not giving the locals any confidence and this video we have been talking about we have managed to get it.
6:06 am
let's take a look. these are the girls, some of the kidnapped girls, we don't know how many there are there dressed up and we are told the leader saying some of them had converted and those who have converted they would keep and those who hadn't they would possibly tradeoff with the government. the leadership saying that what they want are prisoners in exchange for these girls, those prisoners wounded up by the government over the years and do not know what the numbers are and who they are or where they were taken from but those are the first pictures we have seen of these kidnapped girls, i should imagine exciting for the parents knowing that at least they are alive. and this is going to have quite a devastating impact on those families whose daughters have been snatched. >> reporter: indeed, jane, the families have been very distraught as every day passes
6:07 am
by. there is confidence in the authorities to be able to locate these girls has been slowly eroding and this is a very vast area, more than nigeria and i listed the area myself. it's very remote. it's a very bushy terrain and don't forget the fighters are local fighters from within that area. they know exactly every inch in that forest where they believed to have taken the girls. it's a very different terrain indeed and difficult for these families to understand and imagine why despite the fact this area has been under emergency law by the military and despite the fact the military has been active for so many months and years they have not been able to hunt down the group. it clearly shows the gaps within the nigerian military, areas where they are lacking specifically when it comes to intelligence gathering. there is allegations within the
6:08 am
nigerian government and themselves, allegations of perhaps collusion and misleading information being given to the military but all of these in the end appear to be families that is near excuses and many families saying they have given up on the official search and rescue efforts and taking matters in their own hands and trying to find the girls themselves >> that is so significant and seeing the pictures of the girls for the first time and in a month after their kidnaps and we hope this is resolved soon and thank you for that. let's move on to other news. pro-russian separatists in eastern ukraine are claiming massive victory after a referendum on self rule. final results expected in to hours time and 89% voted in favor of creating a people's republic with 10% against and those saying yes to self rule was higher at 94% and separatists are planning a second round of voting, this

starting to get indications of what the answer is and the answer is a slide toward russia. what we heard from the chem lynn -- kremlin saying for implementation as quickly as possible of the vote. the question posed in the vote is ambiguous and referred to self rule. now what exactly does that mean? we heard two things today. first of all from the self declared mayor from slovonsk who said we are russians and speak russians and never part of ukraine and he is trying to take his city. here in donsk we had the self declared chairman of the unilaterally created donsk people's committee and said today this is dennis and said today as follows if the transition period lasts a long time it will reflect badly on the people of the region, we are russians, we are slovs and i think in the near future there will be some kind of union here.
