9:02 am
organizations and u.n. and european union and others to support the war on terror. they are fully aware that iraq could be the direct target but the region as a whole is going to suffer. we call upon them to cooperate with iraq and control therd boors in order to stop the terrorist groups from coming into iraq but cutting off the lines of support that provide them with funds, weapons and resources and men. the government is calling on them to carry out the duties. >> we are live from baghdad, we are looking at what he's saying and looking to pass a state of emergency and give us the context here and idea of how difficult it might be to launch since actions.
9:03 am
>> well, i can tell you that the speaker of the house said that the parliaments are reconvening for an emergency session on thursday. all eyes now on thursday to get a state of emergency passed. it is not going to be easy. he's faced immense criticism with the handling of the security of iraq. a state of emergency will give him sweeping powers. he's already put the iraqi arm on a state of alert. how long would the state of emergency last and what happens with the forming of the next parliament and returning to a state of dictatorship. it is clear that most of the politicians are in favor of taking a strong grip.
9:04 am
it all depends on the powers he's given the rules of the emergency of the state. >> if you look mosul -- we have lost our contact with him. we are going to the guest in the studio, the former middle east policy and director of the center, picking up on what he was saying, he was saying questions in iraq on the state of emergency is actually going to mean and not everyone is on board with it. >> absolutely not. he's going to strike hard in mosul and the areas of elsewhere. it is not likely going to pacify the suni population there.
9:05 am
where we have seeing a break down of trust between that community overall and the central government in baghdad. all this while the politicians are wrangling about a new government. we don't have a new government at this point and he's hoping to be the prime minister again and all this before a new parliament. it is showing how broken that the iraqi political system is. >> we talk about the suni community, and they are representing the community, and we have seen the violence because the suni community is antithe shiite led government. >> it is going to be a very dangerous game to target them at all al qaeda or terrorists.
9:06 am
there is a divided opinion. the problem is that we don't seem to have a reconciliation memberingism with the central government or the prime minister in particular. as long as that continues, we are likely to see iraq few they are and further into the abyss. >> that is a frightening thought. the governor has thrown his hands up and people fight to save your own neighborhoods. i mean, where is the police, the arm? >> the army and the federal police are seeing as sectarian actors here. it should be alarming that a second city, and other places are now under pressure and prove
9:07 am
vennses as well collapsing and putting a strong arm in place is not working. we have to find another way. i suspect that requires a regional approach as well as working with the iraqi's. there is a problem here developing, where the dreams of this islamic is drawing a line. i hear even today on the border crosses of syria and iraq there are elements who are now putting the pressure on the areas controlled by the kurds. >> what is the response he can get? >> he should endorse a regional conference and i believe that the u.n. should take on that role. there is an an exlented u.n. representatives there who has
9:08 am
got to know the parties well. there needs to be a regional approach. the government was planning a conference on the 15th of this month, the problem with that is government invitation is not taken up by so many of the suni leadership and the tribal leaders and while the efforts continue, i think more of a regional approach and bringing in saudi arabia and gulf states and iran and getting away from what is looking like a very serious problem. >> can action be taken fast enough? it is out of nowhere for the people that they have taken their eyes off of iraq. >> this is what happens when you try to manage some of the brewing conflicts that we have seen in the region, rather than try to resolve them.
9:09 am
on syria, we have let it drift. we had been warning that these areas were being infiltrated by the al qaeda extremists and similarly in iraq the broken system is allowing the resurgence in iraq. this is a very deeply worrying silts situation. it is requiring the regional actors to avert the kind of horrible scenario that we are seeing of these al qaeda, extremists taking over large parts of the territory in iraq and syria. >> very worrying situation. thank you for coming to the studio. >> now to pakistan where the gunmen attacked a security post near the karachi airport and still recovering from sunday
9:10 am
night. pakistani taliban is claiming responsibility for both of the attacks. flight operations have now resumed. >> even though the local media was reporting a fresh attack on karachi airport the security forces were quick to say this was not an attack but a fighting incident in which unidentified gunmen opened fire on the security force at the airport. the airport is now clear and the search operation is underway of the airport and the airport is now safe. all flights have indeed resumed into karachi airport and the situation is now normal. >> the military restarted a campaign of air strikes targeting the taliban and 15 rebel fighters were killed on

streets. that is wrong. they don't have a right to do that. >> cameras were only allowed in the opening moments of the trial and the relatives shouting animals, murders. there was the opportunity of the defense to make the points, the lawyer saying that the captain did all he could do to right the ship and he was the last member of the bridge to get to safety. the charge of homicide is unusual in a case like this and combined with desertion and the crews actions. there was a reminder of those in court are far from those being accused. they are calling for the police to arrest the business leader accused of being the real owner of the ferry company. it's actions are overloading the
