cup news including shining here in the world cup opener. ♪ sunni rebels in northern iraq scored another important victory as they push to the capitol of baghdad. it's the latest blow to the government. rebel fighters capture the town of talafa on monday after fighting with soldiers and also control the second largest city as well as the city of decrete, hundreds are joining the fight against the rebels and these are pictures from baghdad taken on monday morning and they are supplied with army fatigues and thousands of people volunteered after the top sheer clerk. sunni rebels posted pictures

online showing fighters massacring hundreds of iraqi soldiers near decrete and a source in baghdad says the pictures are authentic saying they claimed 1700 soldiers. hundreds of thousands iraqis left their homes because of violence and people going to the north and abdule is there and another area has fallen to rebels and this time in the north. >> reporter: yes, indeed and it was basically the last or one of the last towns where the iraqi army had a significant presence in the province. it's quite a significance and it's mixed and divide among sunni and shias and the fall of the town comes after at least 24 hours of very fierce battles,

some of the people we spoke to there said this was described as very, very, very difficult times and they said there was a lot of casualties. we don't have a figure of that. but they did describe quite violent situation in that town. now it's also quite a blow for prime minister malachi because it's the world division and elite forces of the iraqi army and a huge blow for him. >> and we have heard this call for sheer volunteers to join the iraq army and fight and how well prepared is the iraqi army to face this threat? >> reporter: well, i think if the iraqi army was well prepared there wouldn't be that call for volunteers to join the fight. and we have seen pictures of hundreds and hundreds of young men who are joining that fight. but what they will be able to do

is going to be very difficult. they could probably put up a fight in baghdad and in the shia heart land of the country if indeed the sunni rebellion reaches that be have a belt in the middle and in the north where there is no more iraqi presence whatsoever and that is the case in disputed territories claimed by the kurds and arabs and baghdad could lose those disputed territories without having to go through the legality anymore. >> it's the biggest military base in the area, known here as k1. until a few days ago it was home to the 12th infantry division of the iraq army and they are deployed and fled on the same day he fell to sunni rebels and the group known as islamic state

in iraq. we take a tour of what looks more like a ghost town than anything else. millions of dollars of u.s.-made equipment, some donated by washington, reduced to wreckage. this is the command center. it's all burnt out. you can still really smell it. it's not clear who was behind the fire. some say the soldiers destroyed as much as they could before running away. others blame looters and angry residents but seems that everyone left in a hurry leaving everything behind and a prisoner's visitors registry and a manual of the special forces. this is a listing with all the names of soldiers and officers and their personal addresses. these are passport photos. some of them have their names

behind them. if the sunni rebels were to get their hands on this, they could go after these people one by one. the iraqi army opened the door for forces to fill the security vacuum. >> translator: we have troops and we need to expand further south but all kurdish areas are under our protection. since 2004 we have been trying to explain we want to help protect people. now look at what a terrible fate. >> reporter: yet, this situation is somehow a blessing for the kurds, a points of convention between baghdad and the kurdish authorities is much delayed referendum over the so called disputed territories. a large amount of land that is claimed both by arab and kurds and at the heart is cook regarded by kurds as their historic capitol. >> translator: it has been sold on the ground, officially this

the town on sunday evening in two mini vans and gives you an idea of how many attackers or several involved to be involved and some estimates are 50 gunmen involved in the attack and gun battles lasted hours and extent of damage transpired in the early morning hours when it was clear that several government buildings and local lodging houses and a petrol station and restaurant and coffee shops were damaged by gunfire and also many people had fled into a nearby forest seeking refuge there. it's important to note the attack appears to have been targeted locals as opposed to attack targeting westerners or tourist targets per se. in that sense this attack will appear to be different. authorities immediately pointed the blame at al-shabob and comes

with the larger context there is a large threat and foreign governments issue travel warnings to their citizens, united states reviewing the level of its staff in the embassy in nairobi and uk shutting down consulate in mombasi and it's another security incident in a larger, on going terror threat in kenya. >> reporter: let's talk a little bit more about al-shabob and based in somalia but 2011 they increased the cross border attacks and kidnappings and the government responded by sending the army into southern somalia to fight there and they continued to launch attacks on civilian military and targets including an attack last year on the west gate maul in nairobi and 68 people died. just last month one of the senior leaders warned the group

intends to shift its attention even more towards kenya and threatened to carry out revenge killings that target girls. no ham is one of our journalists on the web team and specializes in africa and welcome to the program. first of all, what are you hearing about how security forces managed to deal with what happened in pakatoni? >> reporter: the attack in pakatoni, the stress code from the security services there was at 9:00 p.m. local time. what witnesses on the ground in pakatoni tell us is reenforcement arrive at 1:00 a.m. on monday. >> that is quite slow. >> that is quite slow. what we also know is kenyan authorities have been treated within hours of the initial attack happening and military surveillance plans in the air. what they didn't -- the reasons where -- why there was no rescue

or attack on military planes flying in pakitoni and only surveillance planes is not explained. what we know if it is al-shabob sometimes they claim responsibility for that and while the attack is on going but sometimes they do take their time claiming responsibility. what we know last month attack in jabuti was claimed three days after the initial attack happened. what we know in 2010 when there was attack by al-shabob and it took almost 24 hours before they claimed responsibility so the common or perhaps the coming days will be crucial. >> so we could yet get a claim of responsibility for al-shabob and surely having witnessed what happened in the past in kenya with the string of attacks by al-shabob and kenya should be on high alert and more prepared for these potential attacks. >> the smoke was there, it was

just the tire that was missing. if you look at things that happen in the last month in kenya, for example, there was the prominent government, chairman of the consulate in kenya, just on friday, uk closed the consulate in mumbasi, just a few weeks before there that was attack in northern kenya by al-shabob and the smoke was there and just the fire was missing. >> thank you very much indeed for that. and he was from al jazeera's web team. israeli military arrested dozens more hamas activists while it searches for three missing teenagers in the occupied west bank and arrested on monday is the speaker of the palestinian parliament and a senior hamas figure and accused him of abducting the teenagers and they had gone hitchhiking and myselfing on thursday and we are

live in the occupied west bank and give us the latest on these latest arrests. >> as you said, julie, they are on going and they certainly were last night. now we are here in hebron which is the biggest major city to where they were taken, those three israeli teenager. this is really where that israeli army operation has been focused especially in the initial days after they were taken on thursday night. now the streets are fairly calm at the minute and not seeing the car checkpoints and constant checkpoints and house searching during the day that have been reported over the last few days but night tirades and arrests continues and palestinian forces say 150 people have been arrested since thursday night when the teenagers went missing and continuing across the west bank including places like hamali where one palestinian man was shot in a confrontation with the israeli army as they were

conducting arrests. also today the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu released a statement saying he telephoned the palestinian president telling him he expected his full cooperation and expected him to assist in the returning of these teenager and also in basically arresting those who are responsible for taking them in the first place. he reiterated a point he is constantly talked about which is that they were taken from an area that he says was under palestinian authority control. now that has already been rejected be i the palestinians who continue to say they were taken under what was under full israeli control and that argument continues. >> concern over the israeli teenager but what is hamas saying about the accusations they are the one whose have taken them? >> hamas continued to respond by saying that accusations are not

appropriate, that they find them silly and basically this is part of a larger war that the israelis are waging on the palestinian people. it's not an emphatic no they have not been responsible for taking these teenager neither is it an emphatic yes, at this point it seems unclear who really has taken these teenagers because nobody has come forward to claim it and nobody has come forward with any demands but last night u.s. secretary of state john kerry released a statement saying that they were still assessing information as to who was responsible but many indicators pointed to hamas and reiterated the u.s. stance they believe hamas to be a terrorist organization. there is a lot of pressure on hamas and fingers pointing at them but it's not clear if they are involved in the alleged kidnapping. >> thanks for that. that is jane ferguson there. coming up, on the news hour, waiting for justice, the trial

of three al jazeera english journalists has resumed in cairo. the president of columbia describes his election victory as a vote for peace after staking his leadership on negotiating with rebels. and coming up, in sport, michael shumaker out of a coma six months after a skiing accident. ♪ now, ukraine eastern guy minister says the russian government cutoff all gas supplies and monday's deadline for ukraine to make a payment of $2 million to the gas giant has passed. the russian gas says ukraine owes $1.59 billion and the price of gas is $485 1/2 per thousand cubic meters, that is the highest in europe. the government in kiev says it's

prepared to make four payments if the russian government cuts the price to $326 and the offer was rejected and rory is live in moscow and we were expecting a press conference soon, but go ahead and cut supplies as it said it would. >> yes and he has. this is exactly what everyone who has been involved in weeks of negotiations was trying to avoid, a cutoff yet here we are the ukrainians essentially saying that although there is flow coming through russia to ukraine and bound for europe, the actual gas that it would take for itself, that has been reduced to zero. are the ukrainians worried about this? they are saying they do have enough gas stored to last them until december. but they are also asking the european commission to permit a massive reverse flow supply to

slovakia with gas being piped through ukraine almost a year and turn around and sent back to ukraine again and the ukrainian prime minister is also saying that he is preparing a state of emergency bill for ukraine eastern guy sector. so there is certainly a fairly large degree of concern at the moment but saying they can hold out for a few months. >> the argument is over the amount of money they are paying for the gas and ukraine has said there is an amount that it will accept and will pay up front, are we further along in those negotiations? >> no, not really. ukraine is asking for a low amount. what was agreed with the former president before the revolution and before he was ousted and before the new powers in kiev took over, that is the deal that

ukraine wants to return to. russia is saying, no, that doesn't apply any more so we are only willing to offer you $385 per cubic meter of gas, that is the lowest that russia is prepared to go. ukraine is saying that is not low enough and that is why we have come to this situation. so essentially both sides have been pushing each other and pushing each other and russia was willing to delay the deadline but not willing to lower the price any more and now we are in a situation where there is no gas for ukraine and both russia and ukraine are taking each other to the court of arbitration in stockholm. russia is trying to sue ukraine for $4.5 billion in unpaid gas receipts. and ukraine is suing russia for a price that it says is unfair. >> rory thanks for that in moscow there.

backed rival candidate whose party will continue to be a strong force in opposition. >> translator: this is the first state of organizing our party more effectively, it's a new alternative, a new choice for columbia. >> reporter: dispute his victory president santos will face a great challenge this congress, 20 senators from the democratic party have been elected and the leading senator there is former president who has labeled santos a traitor. and he has attacked santos saying he abandoned his hard line military policy against rebels and now he will fight back. the peace negotiations will obviously be a main issue against to which the central democratic will act on every opportunity available to it and if and when the agreement is signed, it will be subjected to a referendum against which obviously central democratic will work to assure the population votes against it. >> reporter: almost half of the

country voted for his opponent and share his concern. >> translator: i would like there to be peace but peace with justice, not peace with impunity. >> reporter: after such a tightly contested race santos will breathe an sigh of relief if he is president and his greatest challenge will now be to convince colombians it's time for negotiated peace. i'm with al jazeera, columbia. let's return now to one of our top stories, the suspected al-shabob attack on the town of pakatoni and we have the coordinator for the red cross branch and well -- welcome to the program and you are currently at a hospital there and can you tell us what you are seeing? >> reporter: thank you, currently it's very tense and people are scared.

and looking after each other. >> lots of reports of injuries and lots of deaths, can you update us on the casualties? >> the number is actually very small because what they have done is casualties and currently we have three injuries actually and all of them are actually in the county hospital on the island and currently no interviews at the county and at the county hospital. >> what are people saying to you about the actual attack? it looks a very ferocios attack with damage and burned out cars?

>> yes. actually this happened last night and it will continue, gunshots to 1:30 a.m. in the morning when it ended. this is the unit and process and they are collecting bodies and a lot of people are -- [inaudible] and most bodies identical if is with the exception of six bodies. >> thank you very much indeed

and we are from the kenya red cross. now the trial of egyptian president morsi resumes shortly and and trial with 35 others accused of spying for hamas, members of muslim brotherhood and out lawed and they will hear the testimony of the country's foreign interior minister and breste and mohama don't and they have charges of supporting the out lawed muslim brotherhood and spaghetti junction rejects charges and demand for their immediate release and we have this report. >> reporter: almost six months behind bars, waiting for others to decide their fate, journalists greste, mohamad and bahmir are accused of supporting

the muslim brotherhood and asking for the maximum jail terms and 7 years for greste and 15 for mohamad and fahmi and they are not alone and another journalist is also in prison but without charge. he has been on a hunger strike for five months and his health is declining. families are getting increasingly frustrated. >> the prosecution did conclude its case with what i think in all fairness were pretty wild and sweeping allegations against the whole of the group. >> reporter: other journalists have also found themselves being called enemies of the state, activists too. a court sentenced this man to 15 years jail just last week and a key figure in the 2011 uprising that toppled mubarak but si si is now the president and

promising to fix egypt's many problems and journalists want him to promote freedom of the press, so far they have a state which does the opposite. i'm with al jazeera. al jazeera english is not allowed to report in egypt so our colleagues cnn are helping to cover the trial of our journalists and we know the trial has resumed for the al jazeera journalists, what has been happening? >> reporter: that is right, right now that trial is underway. what we are hearing though is lawyers from other defendants giving their final statements and the lawyers for al jazeera journalists gave their final statements last time. there is abundance of state media here and that is really because we are expecting the verdicts to be a date for the verdict to be announced sometime within the next month or so, and really the highlight of this whole trial though has been the lack of hard evidence that

implicated these al jazeera journalists. at times even the prosecution's star witnesses have contradicted themselves. despite all that the prosecution is calling for the maximum sentence to be handed down, saying it should be without compassion or mercy. julie. >> it's interesting what you are saying about the case of other defendants being heard because there seems to be a feature of the egypt justice and expected to have their trial together. >> reporter: that's exactly right. we have seen that really within the past year. and it's just typical of egyptian judicial system where you will get a mass trying of a bunch of people, most notably you had hundreds of people who were sentenced to death over a certain circumstances, it is you see at times all of the people

all at once thrown in together. >> quickly, do you think we will get a date for the verdict today? is this whole thing finally drawing to an end? >> reporter: definitely seems like it will actually. and it will give us a sense of what day we will have a closer to this trial. we have been seeing the wrapping up of both the prosecution and the defense. the defense lawyers for the other people who are on trial as well delivering their final statements today and also with state media here is an indicator we will certainly get a date where this whole thing will come to a close. >> we can only hope that justice prevails on that date and ean thank you for that and ean from cnn correspondent colleague there. okay, let's get the weather with everton and apparently there is a load of flooding in brazil and everyone is going to ask will

that affect the world cup. >> it may and in question is a town northeast of the country and i don't know if you caught anything of the friday match between camaroon and mexico and you see the rainfall has been chucking its way down across that particular part of the country and we saw around 120 millimeters of rain over the last 24 hours. over the last three days we see 279 million meters of rainfall and that is the june average rainfall in just three days. this is what it looks like on the ground there. we seen fair amounts of clouds rolling across the region there and the showers and not persistent rain but heavy showers and as a result of that there has been widespread flooding in and around the town. so around 25 homes have been destroyed by the flood in a mudslide and you see the low-lying water that sits there and still raining at the moment as you can see from pictures at

pay the bill of $2 billion by monday and says it has enough gas stores to last until december. so back to our top story, that rebellion in iraq, some western embassy including the u.s. are evacuating staff from baghdad despite claims it has made gains against fighters and they are led by isil captured and taken towns north of baghdad and military is building up forces north of baghdad preparing for a counter offensive and militants are in control of the area in the other province and the latest town to fall in rebel hands is talapa and they said it averted ats salt over health of tribal fighters and the town is a corridor for rebels to conflict hit syria and we have director of research at the institute for near east and gulf

military analysis and joins us live from dubi and good to have you on the program and sunni fighters have just taken control of the three big areas north of iraq that they control and do seem to be gaining momentum. >> reporter: they have actually been on a tsunami for the past week and they are picking up a lot of equipment and finances and information that is leading to them to capture more cities and towns as they begin to encircle baghdad from the north. >> do you think they will reach baghdad? >> reporter: there is every indication they are going to try to do that or at least to harass baghdad but for the isis ideology and drive and to capture baghdad would be a huge strategic and tactical victory

that would insight a lot of other groups and individuals who are following him and his people to commit violence elsewhere in the region and beyond. >> clearly the u.s. very concerned about what is happening there as is iran and we are talking to them about the security situation in i ran, do you think we will see joint cooperation between the two? >> i don't think we will see joint military operations for example with close air cover for iranian forces on the ground but there are negotiations going on and began 3-4 days ago at the u.s. government and highest level of government and religious authorities in iran and forward progress in this. i would assume in the next few days we will see some type of action and we know iran is moving into irgc troops into

iraq. there is already a force on the ground, that swings through the arab marsh region in the south as well as into basra so the division line is becoming very clear where the epic battle will occur between both sides. >> and the iraq government seems to be firmly fixed on a military approach and we heard them saying they are going to crush and surely there has to be a political solution as well because without it it looks like iraq will be carved out and each controlled by different groups. >> i think malachi's situation is he is out on his demise because he created a military country that is basically unable to fight. there is a lot of desertion going up and videos by isis is

been strikes in one subdivision and not one but two subdivisions and casualties where 15 fighters were killed and another 12 were killed in air strikes. across the country and railroad stations and airports are on red alert. security has been beefed up. we are also hearing that in the province all leave cancelled for doctors and the hospitals have been put on emergency footing. the military operation is likely to last for some time according to reports we are getting. they have surrounded certain fighters in the north of the area and also plugged and blocked off access routes. at the same time pakistanis asked them to beef up security on their side of the border to

prevent the fighters escaping across the border and the government to conduct operations where the leader of the taliban, pakistan is said to be hiding. >> taliban fighters using pakistan's larger city karachi to raise funds and they told al jazeera the fight made as much as $1.2 million from kidnappings alone and we report. >> reporter: police sweep in karachi slums in search of suspected fighters hiding in the narrow ally and it's an operation against criminals in the city and 20 million people are estimates to be living in pakistan's largest city and police say the search was successful and weapons were found and six suspects arrested. in the last few years many taliban fighters have come to karachi after military operations against them in the north. >> translator: the largest

population is outside of tribal people and south and north or karachi and highest number of taliban fighters and come here and be guests of relatives and it's easy for them to find support. >> reporter: law abiding christian citizens are helpless for people who use exploitation and loyalty and policing is all the more difficult as the usual crime fighting carries the extra burden of counter terrorism operations and corruption within law enforcement agencies is helping criminals and many people simply don't trust policemen and the taliban know it. >> translator: karachi is the club for the tap ball and extortion is easy and you can make thousands with calls to a businessman who don't want trouble and kidnap for that and assessment in the 8-10 months is they generated $1.2 million in

windows and they set fire to all the religious books. >> reporter: the assemblies of god was started in the u.s. 100 years ago with 66 million followers it forms the largest denomination in the world. and the monks who attacked the church were angry with how they were converting buddhist in the area and we went to see the monk who led the attack. >> translator: these people go into village's saying budda is a liar and destroying buddhism. >> reporter: it's not just the christian community being targeted, groups rise over plans of a nearby building to be used for muslim prayers. tension is apparent in this muslim neighborhood of columbo and tried to go to the mosque which is 200 yards down there and film and we were stopped from filming by a group of young buddhists. they only appeared in resent years, the largest of the groups

here and denies any role in the violence. >> we have not done anything against christians or muslims but of course we have exposed certain elements of fundamentalists groups. >> reporter: of course groups like bbs represent a small minority of buddhist in shrelenka and the last condemn any form of violence against other faiths. >> in the religion you can find maybe some radical moments that these are not actually religion. they are the frontrunners and stipes they get political influence also. we can see some of the states come and they go. >> reporter: it's hoped that moderate views like this held by buddhist in shrelenka will calm
