beach and a two-year-old girl has been killed. the israeli army says more than 440 rockets have been launched from gaza over the past three days. 96 on thursday alone. some of those rockets have gone as far as tel-aviv, but the iron dome defense system has intercepted many of them. >> reporter: family members huddle and cry around the small body of the 9-year-old palestinian girl killed during an israeli air strike. she was rushed to hospital, but died soon after. her father carried her through the streets of gaza during a small and subdued funeral. >> translator: i would like to send a message to the coward enemy. what wrong did this innocent child commit to you. this isn't the first child

buildup is taking place just outside of the border with gaza for possible ground invasion. but palestinian fighters continue to fire rockets into israel. rocket sirens are regularly heard in israeli southern cities close to the border with garza, and for the last few days, rockets targeted tel-aviv. many rockets have been intercepted by israeli's iron dome defense system. but israel insists it will continue to attack hamas from the air, land, and sea, until no more rockets are fired at israeli territory. the united nations city council has held an open session on the conflict. and has been hearing from the palestinian and israeli b bam -- ambassadors on the crisis. >> today we face the risk of an

he took a very rare step in actually asking for this city council meeting, and saying it was important for them to meet. he can do that, but doesn't do it very often. we didn't hear the various positions of the 15 countries around the table of the city council calling on the city council in open session. they all spoke in closed session, but we know that the us will support israel in some ways. the us is not happy that there should be any strong condemnation of israel. that is always the situation, and that will have been the situation again when they met today, and that's i think why you won't have anything more than a statement from the security council right now. >> okay. james thanks very much for the update there from the united nations.

the israeli military is saying a family who lost eight members in an air strike have been given adequate warning. six of the victims were children. it happened in an area of gaza. bernard is life in jerusalem. what exactly is the military saying on this? >> it says it was targeting odaey, the hamas commander in the area, so they targeted his house, but in fact the list of people say they didn't kill him but eight members of his family, and injured another 25. the israeli military have put out a statement about this, and in it they say in this specific case, . . .

>> the family left the building, proving that they had received warning call. and just let me quickly explain this knock on roof procedure. after calling a house that the israeli military are targeting, they fire a small rocket without an explosive war head on to the roof of the house essentially to tell the people in that property that they mean business and that house is going to be hit, but something went wrong. eight people were killed, as we said, 25 others wounded. i should also add in the rockets that have come out of gaza today in the past hour, we have seen one come very close to our office here. we're just south of jerusalem. the siren went off about an hour

♪ hello, this hour here on al jazeera, the israeli and palestinian envoy of the united nations has accused each other. and ban ki moon says there is a big risk of an a ground offensive. an israeli family who lost 8 family members had been given sufficient warning says the israeli military. amid all of this talk, it is easy to miss one very clear fact. that is that at least 88 people have been killed in the gaza strip since those air strikes

began on tuesday. the number that have been killed in israel is zero. now the number of people who have been injured in gaza is at least 550, and the number of israelis injured, just two. these numbers reflect israeli's superior military. the israeli military says it has hit more than 600 sites in gaza. and says 442 rockets were fired from gaza. some have hit israeli targets but most have proved ineffective. republicans we're joined live now by john in gaza. those numbers speak for themselves. gaza is not a safe place to be. what is the situation now? >> it is not safe here now by any means, and that disproportion is what strikes everyone here. you hear those debates in the un and each side is talking as if

this is somehow an balanced fight. it is not balanced by any measure. the israeli military said that if that family were all killed mistakenly, that would be a tragedy. nevertheless that was just one of two major strikes last night in that same town, and today we're told that a family of eight has been killed. the question that people here have is -- is israel justified in killing your whole family even in you were responsible for a rocket attack that so far has killed no one. that's what has people here very much upset. and adding to the general sense of unease here in gaza, israel has been distributing leaflets telling people to leave their homes. you can imagine the effect that

has. talk of a potential ground war and calling up of israeli reservists. people here are terrified that that is what is going to happen next. and they feel there is a an imbalance that is not being seen internationally. up with good thing has hand, and that is that the border crossing to egypt has been opened for very, very limited purposes. for people to get treatment who are injured. however, stephanie decker tells me that so far only about a dozen people have been able to cross. and one reason for that is you have to have duel nationality, visa or residency elsewhere, and so few people here have that. >> thank you very much indeed. we'll return to this story, of course, over the course of the evening. for now, though, let's get you other news. it's the kind of treatment that

crises like syria. she is asking the top intelligence official of the united states to leave the country. there was an case of a 31-year-old intelligence officer who exchanged some 200-plus documents in exchange for over $30,000. the second incident involves a member of the military. it's not clear at what level this person was operating at or what kind of information they may have gathered. however, it was clearly just too much. the snowball effect here last october when it was revealed that america's national security agency was spying on angela merkel's cell phone, following other revelations about how the

targets inside the city in preparation of a ground force moving in. but we haven't seen any evidence of a ground force preparing to move into the area. there is a question of what kind of hardware is being used in these air strikes? the iraqis really have two options. one is the cessna plain which is equipped with hell fire missiles. also now they are using the su25, these are planes supplied to them by rush and iran. they have heavier weaponry, so that's another option for them. but we have heard that the iraqis are using drones. when you think of drones, you normally think of americans. there are american drones flying over bagdad, but they are here for defensive purposes for american assets within the country. so it's likely if there are drones being used they are

either iranian or very low-grade iraqi ones. no one in the government is admitting to the use of either of those two drones, but that's what we're hearing from the people inside the city. meanwhile inside the city of musol all is not well. >> reporter: the iraqi government has lost this city, but the new rulers don't agee on who should control the province. among one of the groups here the self declared islamic state. weeks later the groups still share the objective to recall the maliki regime. it seems the group has started a campaign to get rid of any descent to its rule. >> translator: masked fighters
