"talk to al jazeera" today 5 eastern only on al jazeera america >> good afternoon, welcome to aljazeera america. thank you for joining us. i'm morgan radford and coming live to you from new york city. a daunting task recovering the bodies from the crash of the mh 17. >> the ground inigs vas are intensifying in gaza.
1:01 pm
>> well, there is a lots of activity in eastern ukraine. so here are the latest, the dutch foreign min city arrived to the ukraine and telling the president that the people are furious over the report of the bodies being disturbed at the crash site. the rebels allowed the workers to recover body and international monitors are saying they are getting only limited access to the scene and there they are to talk to the rebels about a corridor for the investigators. >> the condition and the status of the bodies and the condition and the location of the debris and if of that is removed. >> the very first tv reporter at the scene of the crash and here is what he had to say about the events unfolding today.
1:02 pm
>> wild flowers, the first memorial on site for the 298 people aboard flight mh 17. some placed by a woman's house is just nearby. >> it is very sad for all of the people, the pilot, the children, it is awful to see something like this happening in your country. >> after living uncovered in the field they put the bodies in the bags and laid them by the roadside. the separatists coming down from the hill, and for the first time in 48 hours since this krach happened we have been told to get out of the area because investigators are coming in. soon after we moved away, a monitoring exhibition arrived
1:03 pm
and let into the area of the crash and more negotiations are needed. >> i'm saying no to the oesc. >> they were allowed to more areas than the trip on friday that ended with warning shots and early exit. >> the site is large and going beyond what we have seen and we are consulting with those in charge to get access to other sites. p >> as the dutch foreign minister arrived, there is is more push for access. >> the prorussian rebels are allowing access. >> a small step forward for the european monitors but with fighting nearby and the access restricted any international investigation is still in question. >> meanwhile, malaysia airlines
1:04 pm
released the list, 198 people from the netherlands, including a student with dual dutch and american citizenship and 43 malaysians on board. the u.s. is now sending a team of experts to help out the government to figure out exactly what happened. joining us live in john from d. c. and good afternoon to you, there is a lot of high level conversation between the u.s. and russia today, what details do you have on that? >> well, there is, you are right, and good afternoon to you by the way. we have learned that there was a top level phone conversation between john kerry and his russian counter part. this was like a meeting and taking place over the telephone. now,, we have not had a readout from the state department,
1:05 pm
according to the russian foreign min tri they are using the influence to bring an end to the hostilities, so in the russian's case is in the separatists. according to the russian foreign minister, they are agreeing that the evidence should be handled over to an international investigation including the black boxes and according to the russian foreign minister, the lead agency in the investigation yet to get going properly remember should by the icao. and interesting, morgan, that is the division of the united nations that looks into air crashes and other civilian aviation incidents. we are still waiting for official readout from the state. >> so, john, agreeing on what should run the point, what
1:06 pm
leverage does kerry have at this point and is there a threat of sanctions? >> well, the president hinted about that and introduced the sanctions before the crash on wednesday, the president putting the line forward this is going to take a long time to sort this out and patience when it comes to resolving the issue of the cause of the plane crash. but the united states is sending people to help immediately. the fbi is saying that one member of the staff is going from the lab to help out, and more is sent if necessary, and the ntsb is saying that a member of the staff is arriving there today in the capital to help. beyond that, help offered by the french, mele melee lay sha and others, and all of this depends on them being allowed to get
1:07 pm
close to the wreckage, as we have seen today from they are there but not allowed close to the wreckage and why is that that is because the russian backed rebels are not recognizing the authority. >> and we are hearing reports that shots were fired nearby. >> thank you. >> at least six people are killed on mh 17 on the way to hiv aids conference in australia, and they are paying tribute to a well known researcher and spokesman. >> we discussed this of course among ourselves, friends and colleagues and we agree that the
1:08 pm
colleagues that we have lost are people that committed their lives and work to hiv aids and would want the conference to go forward. >> officials don't know how many of the victims were going to the conference. >> the ukraines in the united states are remembering the hundreds of lives lost in that tragedy. many joined a vigil last night in philadelphia and calling for those responsible be brought to justice. >> and now to other top story, where it is now the third day of israel's ground e fencive in gaza. netanyahu saying he may expand the operations. so far over 300 palestinians have been killed and more than
1:09 pm
two thousand injured. now, two israeli citizens have been killed and three soldiers. these right here are the latest pictures coming ut o of gaza. watch this, the bombings are focussed on the north side of the strip. the smoke is visible. our reporter getting up and personal and looking at the physical and the psychological damage of the attacks. >> death succumbs the air here. you hear the sound of a drone. this is a border town and no one is feeling safe. >> every house has hundreds of people fleeing their homes and no food, no water. i hope that's whaping to us happens sto all of the arab
1:10 pm
countries so they can feel what we are suffering. another>> we were met with people running away. there is panic here. we are being told there is a few dead people up this road but they are telling us there are israeli tanks and advancing and one is running back from here. what is happening is that people are dying. we see a young girl brought to the morgue and joining her mother and father in death. the result of a tank shell. part of the mother's head is missing. war has no mercy. for those left living there is no peace. this man pulled from the rubble and he's not well and forced to join others seeking shelter. >> i left my house. i don't know if it will be there. my house is 200 meters from here. i have no clothing.
1:11 pm
i am now at my father's house. >> we hear the firing in the air. the war is having a huge psychological impact on everyone, the old and the young, the fear of the people being trapped and no way out. >> funerals for friends and family now daily occurrence in gaza and a funeral for three of the children on friday and the home hit by a tank shelling and the gaza health minister is saying a fifth of the palestinians killeded are children. they need $66 million by tomorrow or else it is running out of emergency supplies. we have more from gaza city. >> the condition for the citizens of gaza becoming
1:12 pm
desperate. they have appealed for $66 million if water, food, blankets. the focus is right behind me, that is the northeast corner of the gaza strip and a lot of the rockets have been flying. the israeli army focussed the air strikes in that area and now that the ground operation is the second day focussing tank shelling in those areas. and that is why so many are fleeing and coming to gaza city and they need water, food, shelter for all of the people fleeing. the israeli army is focussed on tunnels and rocket launchers and they have 13 tunnels going from gaza into israel, and that is new. they have not seen that number of tunnels being used by the
1:13 pm
fighters. they are usually used to launch the rockets. the israeli military is focussed on those. and at the same time, the toll is being taken on the palestinians in northeast gaza. last night we saw nine members of a single family killed and the worry among the residents and the u.n. that the toll on the residents is going to increase. >> nick mentioned that israel one of the main objects is finding the tunnels and destroying them. they found a military wing in tun of the tunnels. the palestinian fighters used to enter to israel. one of the palestinians was killed in a fire fight and the rest fled back to gaza and two more israeli soldiers killed on saturday.
1:14 pm
three are soldiers and two were civilians. we have in israel with more. >> we are two to three kilometers away in the northern part of the gaza strip and we have been seeing a lot of shelling and hearing the shelling from the israeli tanks based in the israeli territory and shelling the targets in gaza behind me. that is continuing throughout saturday. now, separately we know there are efforts by the united nations in order to reach a cease fire to stop the fighting between gaza and israel. we understand that he's arriving to the region to try to advance the talks on the cease fire that has brockered by egypt. he would like to see the cease fire happen soon. we understand from jeffrey felton who is the under
1:15 pm
secretary for political affairs at the united nations that he's meeting with the israelis and palestinians and expressing solid darety and going to the west bank and won't be going to the gaza strip for security reasons. now according to felton, there is a proposal by the palestinian president an order to reach a cease fire. he's willing to send the soldiers to man the corridor between gaza and israel in to guarantee the opening of the border between gaza and egypt. that is a key palestinian dependent and hamas is not going to agree to a cease fire unless an easing of the siege and restriction sz imposed by egypt. it is unknown whether hamas is
1:16 pm
going to agree on the forces based on the border with egypt. >> everyone is condemning the invasion of gaza. we are in london and we are hearing what they have to say. >> thousands have arrived here all over the country outside of downing street, the residence of the british prime minister. >> all of us want to speak up about the horror that is happening on the west bank. what is happening now with the killing of children it is not humane or acceptable. this is no way to try and bring peace. >> everyone has a right to freedom, everyone has a right to be in peace and live in peace. palestinian should be one of the most peaceful place on earth.
1:17 pm
people shouldn't be fighting over this. >> the uk is maintaining their stance and there are dissenting voices emerging and how harshlyize real is using the insurgence in gaza and the death toll there as well. the deputy prime minister saying it is in effect a collective punishment and there are voices as to how israel is using their force and certainly here it is strongly felt. >> next, refugee crisis from the violence in iraq. don't go any where.
1:18 pm
1:19 pm
>> in iraq, three bombs going off in a shopping district in
1:20 pm
baghdad in a span of ten minutes and 27 people were killed. the suicide bombers drove the car full of explosives into the area and hundreds of refugees are fleeing the area every day. we have more. >> it was a show of solid airty. that is how the u.n. head of the refugees described the visit to the camp. hundreds of families living here since june 10th once the fighters pushed the iraqi army out of the cities. people had a lons list of complaints and what they fear is the most is never returning home. they want to return to home and to restart their lives. >> but reconciling the iraq's communities are not easy.
1:21 pm
many of the people are shiites. others are sunni and can't return. 1.2 million people have moved and the kurdish government is already hosting up an a million iraqis and thousands of syrian refugees are here and this is a huge burden. >> the kurdish government has fallen out with the central government in baghdad and not getting their share of the budget. the influx of the people raised the security concerns for the kurds that declare the state as their enemy.
1:22 pm
>> those measures angered many of those here. >> we can't go to the hospital there, we aren't allowed to mv. we are only allowed to stay here. >> those that don't have a kurd to sponsor them are not allowed inside of the urban centers and many are saying they are feeling discriminated against because offest nicety and religion. it is a sensitive time in iraq and the political divide is creating more barriers for the people to decide. >> flight path dangers, where is it safe to fly, the hot spots next. >> plus, wild fires blaze through parts of washington state. stay tuned.
1:23 pm
1:24 pm
1:25 pm
>> good afternoon to you. welcome back to aljazeera america. thank you for joining us. i'm morgan radford from new york city. it is the third day of israeli ground defenses on gaza and 300 palestinians have been killed. the prime minister is visiting the territory. >> and in ukraine, the government is saying it has evidence that the missile that brought down the flight came from russia and operated by russians. the u.s. is joining the monitors to survey the scene of the crash. john kerry spoke with the russian foreign minister and ntsb is going to help figure exactly what happened. >> imagine taking a flight across the world and knowing you might be flying through a war zone, did you know each airliner
1:26 pm
assesses the flight paths differently. well, we look at how airliners deal with the hot spots. >> the faa and other agencies issue notices, and the notices warn about the hot spots on the ground. they have halited ukraine and syria. some war zones fall along or near major air transportation routes. before mh 17 crash, airliners were flying over the ukraine and avoided the crimea peninsula. as a measure we have been avoiding the air space over the region already and we don't foresee impact on the passengers. however, as the airliners are
1:27 pm
diverting the area, retired commercial airline captain says there will be impact to the passengers bottom line. >> it is going to cost the airlines more money to take a longer route, a little longer flight plane and passing on the costs. >> flights to the mideast fly over iraq unless the state restricts the air space, the airlines can take a chance to fly over. thousands are in the air some where around the world, some of the flights will travel above or near war zones. for example, planes travelling from johannesburg to london fly over a warring regions of
1:28 pm
africa. mr 17 flying at 37,000 feet. >> it is subjected that the higher planes fly the lower the risk from the ground fire. the greatest safety is not flying over the war zones and sometimes that comes with higher costs. >> it is all about money. what determines a route of flight is bay the airline by the dispatch the shortest line between two points. >> between two points where hundreds of people lost their lives. aljazeera. >> keeping a watch on the northwest and a cold front is approaching but little rainfall associated with that. we have a number of wild fires
1:29 pm
on going. going to central washington and the fire has destroyed a lot of area. we are dealing with the dry part of this time of the year across the northern rockies and the west and unfortunately no rain in sight. the winds are continuing to gust throughout the day on into sunday as well and the winds are continuing to fan the flames and unfortunately that is not helping with the battling of the blaze. it is causing probleming with the air quality. now back to the maps. the westerly flow is continuing to blow the flames rather alittle further inland and creating the bad air quality for washington and northern areas of idaho as well. this is the case throughout the weekend. hit or miss showers there. but really likes like the rest of the weekend is staying rain and rain into the areas of the

east and ohio valley. morgan? >> thank you. thank you for watching aljazeera america. stay tuned, 101 east is coming up next. >> for more than a decade... the world has witnessed seemingly endless violence in afghanistan... many tell me... the daily reports of attacks... the daily killings... have ceased to hold much meaning... but for those living in this land torn apart by war... there is no more important a time than now. after years of trying to drive back the taliban... most of the nato and u-s troops are leaving... having reported here since the
