intense bomb g, heavy plumes of smoke over gaza. bodies littering the streets of the palestinian territory. gruesome pictures. hopefully we can show you some pictures we have been getting of the bodies that have been littering. let us remind you of the main developments first in gaza. in the last few hours. israel stepped up the bombardment of the palestinian territory. our correspondents on the ground tell us the attacks are getting nearer to gaza city. a number of casualties are rising. the palestinian health ministry says 40 people have been killed east of gaza city. the total number of people killed in 12 days of attacks by air, see and ground stands at
5:33 am
397. the united nations says it needs basic supplies, thousands of wounded have been overwhelming the main hospital. these are the pictures i was telling you about earlier. bodies on the streets of gaza. people caught up in this bombing, innocent civilians lying on the streets of gaza. people have been fleeing to hospitals, trying to seek safety, trying to find a secure place in gaza, which is hard because it's a densely populated area. almost every area is under bombardment. we spoke to a hospital. they are forced to turn back people trying to seek shelter. a desperate situation in gaza. the fierce day of shelling came after a continues night of bombardment.
5:34 am
nicole johnson watched it unfold. here is her report. >> the eastern part of gaza was hit hard on saturday night. wait, wait. we can hear shells and rockets fall on the streets and homes. they are falling everywhere. we have no electricity, everybody has been cut off. for a few hours ambulance vehicles could not reach the neighbourhoods. the attack was so intense it was not safe to go there. >> the red cross can't reach the area, it's too dangerous. people are stuck at home. some managed to flee to schools
5:35 am
in safer areas. we are stuck. the streets are empty. all you hear is shelling. we are living in fear, terrified. there are 18 of us in one room. it's my whole family. we are stuck k and the kids are crying. >> reporter: after a while emergency crews started to reach the area which had been heavily killed. amongst the wounded two women and a child. >> translation: there's random shelling and no communication with israeli forces. >> it was a long and difficult night in gaza. each in daylight, the tense shelling is going on. people will be hoping for a break. long enough to pull out anyone who has been injured or killed. >> an update on the death toll
5:36 am
now. as feared, it is rising. we now here that more than 400 people have been killed in gaza since israel's bombing campaign began 12 days ago. a huge number of people killed overnight as the shelling intensified over gaza. more than 40 killed, but over 400 dead in a 12-day since israel began the offensive on the n closed palestinian territory. the number of injured is more than 3,000. that's higher than the number of people injured in the 2012 campaign. at the time in 2012, more than 1,000 palestinians had been injured. right now today, the number of injured stands at more than 3,000. we spoke to a doctor, the executive director at a rafa hospital destroyed by israeli air strikes. he was forced to loelent at
5:37 am
another -- locate to another clinic and said patients have been turned away because they are over whelmed. >> this clinic is not set up for an emergency hospital. what we receive are children, women, old men in a wheelchair seeking shelter. they say, "protect us, we have nowhere to go, no shelter to hide and we have nowhere to go, and the israelis are shelling everywhere", people coming here are children, women and older men in wheelchair s. we can't accept them, we take them as as we can. the clinic says we don't have places for them. we are unable to get medical supplies to fruit the wounds or move people from other hospitals for surgery, and the difficulties, the influx of people that are huge and our
5:38 am
capacity kept handle the influx of injuries, and we are suffering and people are dying because they are left outside bleeding. gazans are suffering, gazans are dying and are being turned away from hospitals that are overwhelmed with patients as israel's bombing campaign continues. let's check in again with nisreen el-shamayleh. what is the word from israel this sunday morning? why are they intensifying the campaign? >> well, the israeli government structed the army several times to be prepared to expand and widen this operation. we heard a statement earlier from the army this morning, early, saying that they have, indeed, widened the operation. they didn't say why, but said the main goal of this operation is to destroy the tunnels and hamas infrastructure in the gaza strip that is used to attack israeli civilians they are not
5:39 am
justifying why. they were not surprised, because we have heard the government instruct the army several times to be ready to widen the operation when needed and as necessary. we know that more reservists have been called. we know the latest figure is over 57,000. reservists have arrived and called for this ground operation. so they are not justifying why they are widening the operation, but the deaths of four israeli soldiers in less than 24 hours may have something to do with it. one of the cases and deaths that we understand a fighter fired an antitank missile at a week that was operated by that soldier, and in another incident, another soldier was killed when he was in direct combat or fighting with a number of palestinian fighters. this may be why this operation has been widened.
5:40 am
nisreen el-shamayleh, there are diplomatic efforts under way to broker a truce between hamas and the israelis - efforts happening in doha with the u.n. secretary-general visiting. sitting with mahmoud abbas as well. is israel receptive to all this. what is their position on everything happening in qatar today? >> in the last 24 hours, we haven't really heard statements from israeli officials about a possible return to negotiations, to reach a ceasefire. what we have learnt is that the qatari props am, which has been mentioned in the last few days is not on the table. this is the latest that we do know, and this is only what we know. this doesn't mean that israel may not accept a qatari proposal for a ceasefire at some point, because this operation is widening, there are more casualties among the army as
5:41 am
well. at some point the israeli prime minister might decide it's best for him to find an exit strategy, and not continue to carry out the operation in gaza, which he said night not be able to achieve its goal, which is to destroy all the underground tunnels and the network of tunnels that palestinian fighters are using. that indicates that the prime minister, the israeli prime minister would accept an accuracy fire. they are not mentioning one or commenting on the talks in qatar. >> thank you for the moment. let me turn to my guest in the studio from qatar university, to talk more about the diplomatic efforts under way. we have a lot of actors involved. you have the qataris, the turkish prime minister, hamas's leader is here, and the
5:42 am
palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas. is this - you know, the sign that maybe something is likely to come out of this, something positive given that all the players are in doha today. they won't allow me - israelis are not speaking about ceasefire, what we are gathering this morning is that the people of hamas mentioned that they have not insisted to discuss it. it's basically none of the players anticipate diplomacy. the efforts we are speaking about, there is one important fact, that this military operation should stop. every player is believing, but there is no - there is an effort done by qataris brokered. in cooperation with turkey.
5:43 am
the ideas of this initiative by palestinians, hamas and other, you know resistant movements. they sent this kind of demand. these are... >> the conditions to a ceasefire. >> yes, conditions to a ceasefire. there's no fishive. they are playing as a mediator. for these reasons, we see ban ki-moon in doha and a norwegian foreign minister, and all the meating, and the palestinian president in doha. all of this basically is targetting one thing, it is to convenience the international community to have a long-term solution. it is - the whole thing now about who want a long-term solution and who wants a short-term solution. the true mediators, turkey,
5:44 am
qatar, and others, they want a long-term solution. they want sort of efforts done by international community to allow the groups to have a normal a normal life: can there be a long-term solution in 2008, 2009, 2014. a ceasefire has rasped let me go back to square one. the long-term solution, for the last two days that i have talked about it is to have a normal life. >> lifting the siege. >> yes. >> the blockades and all that. >> the discussion is not about liberation of palestine, ending the occupation, solving the israeli conflict. it's not about all of that. it's about lifting the siege, opening the borders, letting people move normally. go to the universities, have a
5:45 am
normal life, medicines, go... >> that's something that israel is not going to agree to as long as they've been under threat. >>nd of the siege -- end of the siege, they were certain. what we witnessed in the last 12 days, with all of the engines with egyptians, and others destroying the tonne 'ems, all did not -- tunnels, all efforts did not weaken hamas. they should think of an exit strategy. and other strat guess to solve the -- strt anies to -- strategies to solve the problem. seem is not solving the problem. you say the latest offensive have not weakened someone, that's the palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas. it has highlighted the divisions among palestinians.
5:46 am
mahmoud abbas will have a meeting in doha. can they agree on a way forward, which hasn't been the case in the last two weeks. two things here. one even if hamas is, you know, the main players on the scope, as we hear, still they recognise the role from mahmoud abbas. they are not really convinced that he's doing an amazing job. they still consider him as, you know as a spokesman of the palestinians. this is a fact. the second fact that after the unity government from two months ago, they believe that they can't work together. they believe that palestinians can't work out all of their differences. the problem is what is happening between hamas and mahmoud abbas. the problem is how much you can convince israeli government, and binyamin netanyahu in particular to end the military operation.
5:47 am
basically, i mean, israelis respect of the leadership of pal stipe, they should listen to the advice and report, because all of the number of casualties will undermine the authorities, if they want mahmoud abbas to be more popular they have - they should allow people so have a normal life, a dz ep people to -- dozen people to have a normal life. this is not happening. >> that is not what is happening to gazans now. they are fleeing their homes, trying to seek shelter anywhere they can find, as israel's bombardment campaign continues. we have seen people fleeing and people arriving in hospitals that are overwhelmed with patients. paramedics, our correspondent told us, are targeted. two of them have been killed in the last two hours.
5:48 am
doctor, we spoke to that they were forced to turn patients away from a clinic because they couldn't cope. >> earlier my cole eke spoke to a nor weegan doctor in gaza, and he said there's a large, large number of civilian casualties. >> we are receiving loads of injured from the shajaiya area, and we were flown over by two f-16 fighters, firing a large number of air to ground missile direct into shaijia. we cope with the situation, but the injuries are severe. as it has been, a large number of civilians and women and children. the problem is that the israeli forces do not allow ambulances to access those people who are trapped.
5:49 am
more than 1 underand hundreds. we don't note the injured in the area, but it's a major problem. the hospital managed, but it is under intense pressure. >> what injuries are you seeing coming into the hospital? >> right now we are operating almost on amputation injuries and shrapnel on the artillery, and the israelis are shelling against the local areas. this may cause internal bleedings and other life-threatening situations. it's very disturbing to see the large numbers of civilians, and the children. the father came running with his daughter, screaming that we need ambulances, we need ambulances. >> you made a plea earlier to world leaders when we spoke to you to stop the violence because it's the vulnerable,
5:50 am
particularly the children, who are being hit. what injuries are they facing, what are you seeing coming in there? >> well, shrapnel injuries, amputations, and fatal injuries. more than 70 children have been killed so far. i think we are getting close to 500 injured children. all steeps of injuries, and for the last two dates following the ground invasion it turned to shrapnel injuries shot into the skin, and the flex of the body. dangerous injuries. there are extremely scared and painful children coming in with minor injuries, the situation is dramatic. i urge the international community, the red cross and u.n. to safeguard the security of the hospitals and the access of ambulances for the civilian
5:51 am
people in gaza. what about supplies? it's difficult to get supplies in during peace times, how are the medical supplies holing out. how are you coping. >> i asked my colleagues, what do you think? and they said everything is critical. disposables, drugs, medical equipment and not to forget power and water. the 7 years of siege on gaza has gripled the system, and it doesn't get much better when there's an enormous case load, and we do not have supply lines for urgently needed supplies to run the hospital in gaza. >> let me get a final thought. i know you are a medical doctor, but what do you think the psychological impact is, particularly amongst children and parents of children. >> what is remarkable with the
5:52 am
palestinians in gaz e is their resill -- gaza is their resilience. i'm amazed to see the calm and coherence in the community and in the hospital among the staff. it's the three medical doctors who had their homes shattered by the israeli attacks. still they are standing their cause. the psychological effect is that the more they bomb, the more they are convinced and determined that they will not give up. they will not yield to the pressure. they stand tall and say calmly we are used to this, we will not screpder. we have the right though this planned, and we'll help our people. despite the fact that they are exhausted. i see a palpable determination and co-he weres among the palestinian -- coherence among the palestinians. really they are talking about how can the world accept israeli
5:53 am
terrorism targetting civilians in an area shut off. nobody can say, there are no shelters, systems, the population is completely naked towards enormously strong israeli military machine. >> that was dr mass gilbert speaking a few hours ago when it was still night-time. i'm sad to say the situation has not improved this morning. the palestinian territory still being bombed by the israeli. al-shaaf and other neighbourhoods east of gaza city were the worse hit. people said the shelling was indiscriminate and they were trapped. ambulance teams say it's been too dangerous to go in to help. stefanie dekker joins us live from gaza. you were at a hospital an hour ago, but the hospitals a too
5:54 am
dangerous. >> there was a shooting episode outside the hospital. we are not sure what happened. it was tense. to understand that it's because there was a steady stream of balances coming in, dead children. it's understandable that the people are incredibly distraught. the guards were getting nervous. we have been there for a whale. we decided to leave. we are back at the bureau, you can hear the relentless shelling, and you have a shot of the eastern border. massive... [ siren ] ..there's a lot of ambulances coming down the road, but have not managed to get into the center of those areas. hamas were being told, tried to ask for a 3-hour ceasefire so that the ambulances could reach the area. israel denied that. so as we heard from dr gill
5:55 am
berd, we spoke to, i spoke to him at the hospital. he said, you know, in times of war, these are war crimes. civilians should have a safe passage, they shouldn't be targeted. it's not even a concern. people know there are many, many people there, bodies under the rubble that they want to get out. i don't know if you can hear it over the audio, it's too dangerous to head near there. let's check in with nisreen el-shamayleh in jerusalem. dk says hamas asked for a pause in the bombing to allow ambulances to get into the neighbourhoods that were shelled intensely and israel denied this request? >> i'm not aware of the request or aware of israel denying the humanitarian pause.
5:56 am
we'll have to check and get back to you. >> okay. tell us about what the israeli have said about the bombing campaign, and why we see it expand in the last few hours? >> i think the operation has been widened and expanded following the death of four soldiers in less than 24 hours. two were killed in the morning on saturday in an attack where apparently palestinian fighters, a number of them tried to infiltrate israel through a tonne 'em. that attempt -- tunnel. that attempt was foiled and two soldiers were killed and this morning, overnight, two more soldiers were killed when palestinian fighters fired an antitank missile on a vehicle. the soldier was operating, and another died in fighting with palestinian fighters, in clashes. we saw that these - that the
5:57 am
ground operation has significantly escalated after the incident. it intensified overnight. from the beginning the government saved the army orders to be ready to expand as necessary and when needed. this was expected. it's as if the entire army has been on standby waiting for the order or for when the army finds its suitable or fit to expand the operation. the approval was always there. we heart statements in the last -- heard statements in the last couple of days that the army will intensify, and this is what is happening. >> nisreen el-shamayleh reporting live from jerusalem. we'll continue to monitor the situation in gaza here on al jazeera. we have correspondents on the ground. we have a correspondent in jerusalem, as you saw nisreen el-shamayleh. the israeli bombing campaign on gaza intensifies. more than 400 people have died
5:59 am
real reporting that brings you the world. >> this is a pretty dangerous trip. >> security in beirut is tight. >> more reporters. >> they don't have the resources to take the fight to al shabaab. >> more bureaus, more stories. >> this is where the typhoon came ashore. giving you a real global perspective like no other can. >> al jazeera, nairobi. >> on the turkey-syria border. >> venezuela. >> beijing. >> kabul. >> hong kong. >> ukraine. >> the artic. real reporting from around the world. this is what we do. al jazeera america. >> i'm joie chen, i'm the host of america tonight, we're revolutionary because we're going back to doing best of storytelling. we have an ouportunity to really
