rebels ♪ gaza facing some of the most intention shelling since the beginning of the air strakes began two weeks ago. israel has intensified its ground offensei in the last few days. the israeli army confirming 13 of its soldiers were killed overnight. one neighborhood in eastern gaza was heavily bombarded with missile fire. over sixty civilians there including children were killed. this appears to be the highest loss of civilian life in one district in gaza so far. we are joined by nick schifrin who is live for us in gaza at the moment. nick, good afternoon to you. i understand that you went down to the neighborhood where those bombings happened. what did you see? >> morningan this is the shujayea neighborhood which is
1:02 pm
about two miles, no more, to my left. i can still see and hear lots of fires there. no neighborhood, we drove around. as we got deeper into the neighborhood, the emptier the streets. you look around and there is very, very few people left. there were a couple of people who came to see whether their homes had survived. most of their homes had not. we saw a u.n. school heavily damaged across the street from a house that had been clearly direct hit by an israeli strike. it's a war zone over there. it really is. it's very dangerous for anyone especially for all of those residents and what we saw this morning was an exdid you say, people grabbing whatever they could, leaving as quickly as they can and coming to the only safe place that they thought was safe in gaza, which is the hospital, the main gaza the shafi hospital was overwhelmed.
1:03 pm
the scenes were of horror. mothers crying over their children, the mothers having lost their husbands. we saw medics crying over another dead medic killed in an ambulance this morning by israeli strike. we saw the body of a journalist who the came in. in all, as you said, more than 60 palestinians killed today by far, the deadliest day of this conflict. it does feel like it's getting more violent every day. >> nick, earlier, you mentioned that one of the hepatis that you went to in gaza only has supplies for just one more day. i know there have been requests for more aid. have those requests been met yet? >> yeah. the head of shifah hospital, this hospital that has been really damaged heavily by -- not damaged heavily. i shouldn't say that has been hurt by the people who have come in. it's been overwhelmed. that's the word i was look looking for. overwhelmed by hundreds of people who have been injured and killed in this fighting.
1:04 pm
it was already short of supplies because of an israeli embargo' supplies swoles the e job descriptions closing of its border with gaza. so now that after all of these wounding have come in and all of these dead have come in, the head of the hospital says he only has enough supplies until tomorrow to be able to treat all of these people. the u.n. is calling this the humanitarian catastrophe and they are asking for 60 or $70 million to try to get some of the basic needs, including medicine in to gaza and they say that it is desperately needed within the next 24 or 48 hours and it's not clear they are going to be able to get all of that supplies in time. >> all right. nick, i want to go back to something you said earlier on. you described the empty streets and the mass exodus. is that because of the warnings, because israel said it dropped leaflets in that very neighborhood for two days warning residents about an impending attack. but did residents, at least the ones you have spoken to, say that they actually received that
1:05 pm
warning? >> yes. so this is a -- for the first time really, we have seen a neighborhood targeted for constant battles for the last almost 2 to 4 hours and what's happening is that israel is trying to focus on the tunnels that it says leads from this neighborhood in to israel as well as a lot of rocket launchers. israel had a big operation into the neighborhood last night. a lot of fighting and that's where at least been six or seven or of those 13 israeli soldiers you mentioned were killed, in that neighborhood. today, in response, israel has absolutely decimated in a neighborhood. israel says two days ago, it started warning these residents. you can still probably hear those booms am those are from the same neighborlied. israel warned these residents two days ago. they got those warnings. they were delivered by voicemail, text, leaflets dropped from helicopters, hamas which runs gaza encouraged these people to stay. some listened to hamas. some did leave and listen to israel but there were a lot of
1:06 pm
people there as of last night when that fighting started. that's why we are seeing the numbers, the extremely high numbers of palestinians who have been killed today. >> nick schifrin joining us live from gaza. thanks for being with us. 13 israeli soldiers were killed just overnight. and that's as many as were killed in the last two operations combined. so right now, we are waiting for israeli prime min still benjamin netanyahu to deliver a statement on that and we will bring you that as soon as it comes. but speaking of world leaders, secretary of state john kerry was call in a bit of an open mic slip all during a sunday morning talk show today. john terrett joins us live from the heart of the nation's capitol with that part of the story. john, tell us what happened, one, is kerry appearing to take sides in this off-the-cuff comment? >> well, morgan, good afternoon. this is an extraordinary situation to have cropped up on national television. to put this in context for you,
1:07 pm
when a guest like secretary kerry is appear okay a national television program from a remote studio, there is a lead-in time when they are sitting in their seat but before the presenter begins to ask them questions. >> time is usually recorded by the broadcaster. >> happens all over the country. what happened today was fox news on their sunday morning broadcast, "fox news sunday" decided to record and broadcas , unguarded remarks by secretary kerry in which he appeared to be highly critical of israel's operation in gaza. take a look. >> it's a hell of a pinpoint operation. it's a hell of a pinpoint operation. >> escalating significantly, under scores the need for cease-fire. >> we have got to get over there. >> thank you, john. i think, john, we ought to go tonight. i think it's crazy to be sitting around. >> well, after that, chris wallace, who is presenter of "fox news sunday" asked
1:08 pm
secretary kerry about it and he addressed the remarks he just made only in more usual diplomatic terms. >> yeah. it's tough. it's tough to have this kind of operation, and i reacted obviously in a way that, you know, anybody does with respect to, you know, young children and civilians, but war is tough. and i said that publically and i will say it again. we of defendis's right to do what it is doing in order to get at those tunnels. israel has accepted a unilateral cease-fire. it's accepted the egyptian plan which we also support and it is important for hamas to now step up and be reasonable and understand that you accept the cease-fire. you save lives. >> well, secretary kerry's main remarks in those programs this morning were that hamas should come to the negotiating table and accept the cease-fire offer which is on the table and which is backed by the american side.
1:09 pm
whether he was being critical of the israeli operation or not is for our viewers to decide. but it certainly does appear that way and now, as a result of what we learned this morning, it appears as if secretary kerry or one of his representatives will now be in the region in the next couple of days. morgan? >> well, a lot to unpack there. thanks. john kerry and our other john, terrett, live from the heart of the national's capitol. thank you for being with us. the united nations has asked for aid that is running dangerously low in gaza. over 50,000 people there are in internally displaced and have taken shelt ner 44 u.n. relief schools. before this offensive even began, some 900,000 people of the 1.7 people who are living in gaza already lacked clean water and even sanitation services. in fact, 80% of that population is now limited to four hours of electricity a day. qatar is hosting a meeting
1:10 pm
between mahmoud abbas and ban ki-moon. they are in doha trying to push for an ends to the fighting. mohammed vall has more. >> we know these liters are here the secretary general of the united nations, ban ki-moon is in doha and mohammed abbas. they are having a meeting with the emir of qatar. it is an initiative by qatar to try to find a solution to this conflict. at least a cease-fire for the moment. we have seen the failure of the egyptian effort last week when they proposed a cease-fire. israel accepted it. but hamas rejected because it said it was not consulted with. now, we have another effort by the qataris. they are cashing in on their previous initiatives, the roll of qatar, well known as a broker of peace in many regions. they think they can make a difference here, now that the it has reached a climax. both sides are willing to find a way out.
1:11 pm
we don't exactly know how israel will react to this. we don't know many other factors at play here especially the american role, the egyptian role, whether egypt will finally, accept if anything is agreed on whether egypt will accept some of the items that have been advanced by the palestinan faxes, especially hamas. there is a list of dmaningz hamas has sent to, to this meeting to be conveyed by mahmoud abbas and the secretary general going to tour the region including kuwait and ban ki-moon will convey to the other side. we don't know whether the egyptians will come on board later when this has become something serious. we don't know the american role. until now, the united states has shown support for the egyptian initiative. now, we have rifle initiatives. he job descriptions said they
1:12 pm
are not going change what they have agreed on or the terms of their proposal. the qataris are putting on the table another initiative. all of this effort at least for those who are watching what's going on gaza and the blood shed that is going on. all of these efforts, at least, are expected to or are hoped to bring a solution to this conflict. >> a programming note. "al jazeera america" owned by the al jazeera media network is funded by the government of qatar. now, many are questioning how and if israel will expand its offense-off gaza. in west jerusalem with the latest: >> reporter: they have repeatedly said that this operation can be widened and can be expanded in order to achieve goals. these goals have been stated in the past: destroying the infrom a structure that hamas uses to launch rockets at israeli territory, destroying the tunnels that they use to smuggle in weapons and to try to infiltrate into israel. in the, these goals, we have
1:13 pm
heard over and over again. we hear them in statements from the army more than once a day. and there is no indication of how big this operation could become, but we know that the government has instructed the army to be ready for a possible expansion. we have already seen expansion overnight with lots of civilian deaths, but where it goes from here, we are not sure. >> as the death toll mounts, some demonstrators are showing their support for the people of gaza. in ramallah, for example, protesters are urging israel to stop the fighting. a palestinian lawmaker who took part said the entire west bank is rising up against the aggression happening in gaza. [chanting.] >> meanwhile, hundreds of activists, both for and against theisitsi offensive gathered in tel aviv on saturday, called on hamas as well as theisitsi prime
1:14 pm
minister benjamin netanyahu to end that violencviolence. >>. >> victims of this war, civilians, regular people. life in gaza is hell under this. it must be stopped. >> police officers had to block off crowds who tried to attack the protesters and in totals, 13 people were arrested in demonstrations all across the city. but it didn't stop there. protests for and against theisitsi offensive were held other places around the world. for example, in sydney australia, protesters were seen waving palestinian flags and saying in our thousands, in our millions, we are all palestinians. the protest came after four palestinian children were killed in an airstrike on a beach in gaza just last week. right here in the united states, in indianapolis, people gathered to protest the white house's support of israel and its military campaign. activists carrying signs with messages like "honk for peace"
1:15 pm
and "long live palestine" protesters say they plan to demonstrate every single weekend until the violence ends. >> to the latest on malaysian airlines flight mh-15 shot down over eastern ukraine. the united nations it considering a draft resolution to press russia to get the crash site open for an international investigation. pro-russian separatists in control of that crash site showed international monitors today where they are keeping some of the victim's bodies. the rebels say they are using refridge rated trains in the town of torez until the international delegation arrives. they claim they have located the plane's black boxes emergency service workers were seen removing orange-colored devices from the debris field on friday. rebels say they will hand over those devices to an international civil aviation organization. 298 people died in that crash. the majority from from the netherlands. one american and three infants are among those victims.
1:16 pm
the latest. >> we have been here at what is the remains of the cockpit of mh-17 in the first class lounge which you can see behind me and in the past couple of hours, what was a relatively intact wreckage scene has been completely opened up and destroyed by rescue workers who say they believe there was a body inside. now, what they are doing clearly is gruesome work and they want to get all of the bodies out because they are decomposing. but at the same time, they are tampering with potentially key evidence. the footage that has emerged shows clearly from the 17th and 18th of july that there are intact flight box recorders in the hands of the separatists. they say they were handed over to international experts, again, investigators will need to look at that data to see the last moments of that flight and the conversations in the cockpit which could provide potentially crucial information so those people investigating.
1:17 pm
there is real confusion about how many bodies have been discovered, where they are. at the moment, we understand that they are on a train freight which has been refrigerated at a station waiting to depart after international experts actually view the corpses and the bodies inside, waiting to depart what we believe towards ukrainian government held territory. clearly the investigators from the netherlands, malaysia and interpol want to see those corpses as soon as possible to try to identify the bodies for those families of the victi waiting for any type of information. >> world leaders are putting pressure on russia to rain in pro-russian separatists in eastern ukraine. this, while also trying to guarantee international monitors unlimited access to that crash site. phil it ner joins us live from london. phil, what are you hearing about european union efforts to strengthen sanctions against
1:18 pm
russia? >> well, morgan, there is a lot of talk about heightening sanctions against russia, namely coming from britain. we have heard from the british prime minister today, david cameron in an editorial in the sunday times newspaper in which he said this incident is so significant it might mean the eu has to re-assess completely its relationship with ukraine and that the european union should bring to bear all of its financial, diplomatic and other resources to try and influence vladimir putin, in particular, to move away from his support for those groups in the east, those separatist groups. we also oh, my goodness heard from the dutch prime minister, mark ruta. he is talking about the possibility of further sanctions. morgan, later this week, or in the upcoming week here on tuesday, it has been confirmed that the german, french and
1:19 pm
british representatives are calling for a meeting in perilous of eu members to talk about that very thing, the possibility of harsher sanctions. we will keep an eye on that closely but in europe in general, we are hearing much stronger language today and an awful lot of anger. morgan? >> tough talk from david ramron specifically addressing the eu. what about the united nationss? what's happening there? >> the uniated nations we hearing there is a draft resolution being put forward that would call, what we are theorying at least, with it would can call for investigators to get immediate accounts to the crash site. it calls for condemnation of the event, itself, and for finding out who is accountable. those last two things may be a problem for the russians who hold a veto. but certainly unlikely anybody
1:20 pm
is going to veto a resolution that would condemn the incident, itself. now, that is being drafted by the brits but along with the australians who are incensed about what happened. they lost many and now we have heard from the australian prime minister tony abbott about this incident. let's take a listen to what he had to say. >> i sum monsed the russian trade minister to a meeting and i made crystal clear my concerns and dissatisfaction with the way this is being handled. russian controlled territory, russian-back truck driver rebels quite likely a russian-supplied weapon, russia can't wash its hands of this. >> morgan, that kind of language from tony abbott, mark ruta in the netherlands is gathering
1:21 pm
steam with this sense of anger. well have to see whether those investigators are shroud on the ground to start and get some sort of clearer image as to really what was behind all of this. right now, this situation is getting more tense and getting more tough with the diplomatic efforts. >> rapidly unfolding. facilityner joining us live from london benjamin natali speaking right now. let's take a look. >> this is essential because if these tunnels had not been exposed, consequences could have been much worse. tunnels like the ones that we had exposed could lead to family homes or communal dining areas lead to go mass casualties. this was the plan of hamas. and this is the plan we are
1:22 pm
working to foil. as i sewed, when this action began, there is no guarantee of success. but we are doing everything to achieve as much as we can and i hope to say that resorts until now have -- results until now have exceeded expectations. in the days before we started the ground offensive, we have worked to establish the diplomatic and military infrastructure for this operation. we have accepted the egyptian cease-fire proposal and, also, two others, the humanitarian cell phone cell phone procepose by the u.n. and another one proposed by the red cross. these steps along with conversations that we have
1:23 pm
engaged with world leaders have laid the foundation to the diplomatic capital we have acquired. we today have the support of germany, the u.s., canada, and other important countries. they recognize israel's right to protect itself and to restore peace and security to our citizens. a short while ago, i spoke again with president obama. i thanked him for the united states support for israel at this time. because would he accepted the cease-fire proposal, it cannot be argued israel is responsible for the escalation. hamas is responsible for it. we are doing all we cannot to
1:24 pm
harm civilians in gaza but hamas is doing everything it can to ensure civilians. we regret any harm to civilians but when -- but when they are harmed, the blame lies with hamas and hamas only. the hamas built two sets of infrastructure to damagitsis. the rocket and the tunnels, the idf has seriously attacked both these infrastructures. we have disabled many of the rockets. hamas felt those rockets would be used to break ourisitsi morale amany of these schedule
1:25 pm
rockets and the air force has also attacked many rocket factories and launchers tidf is performing this task. as for the tunnels, the current operation is significantly compromises hamas ability to attack israel. i would like to express deep appreciation for all of the solids who have fighting, e specially their reserve solids who left families behind to go into this operation. i would like to express special gratitude to the chief of staff, chief imagine gaviasnk leading his shoulders. he asked to be with his men rather than come here.
1:26 pm
and the defense minister. we wish them success that we know we need to have along with the chief of staff and the minister of defense, we stand together when we have the same objective we operate shoulder to shoulder with following a systematic plan in this operation against terrorism. this is part of our historic struggle t as in every battle, there are difficult and complex events, and this operation is no different. but the operation is proceeding as planned and it will be expanded as required until peace
1:27 pm
is restored, until security is restored to the citizens of israel. when we started this journey, we knew and i said that this could be a very long campaign. but, from the history of our nation, we know a simple truth: the nation of eternity is not afraid of the long path. we are proud of our soldiers. with god's help and with their help, we will -- we will achieve our targets. >> theisitsi prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying results of the ground invasion have exceeded expectations. >> we are joined now by nick schifrin who is in gaza. nick, before i ask you a question, i just want to recap
1:28 pm
for our viewers what the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu just said: he said if these tunnels had not been exposed, speaking about the underground tunnels that hamas had in gaza, the consequences could have been much worse. he also said he did speak with president obama and he is thank you the u.s. for its support and that he says, quote, hamas is responsible for this escalation, and we regret the harm to civilians but it is exclusively hamas's fault. he said the offensive will be expanded as required. nick, given those statements, it sounds like netanyahu is in this for the long haul. how do you think both sides will react to benjamin netanyahu's comments? >> reporter: oil mean i think that last point is the case, morgan, that both sides are in it for the long haul and perhaps you can hear the drones and the strikes that are happening pretty much every five or six seconds two miles to my left, the shujayea neighborhood.
1:29 pm
this has been the scene of a lot of flighting the last 24 hours, 13itsisi soldiers killed in that neighborhood, more than sixty palestinians, almost all civilians have been brought to the morgue here, killed in that neighborhood. and the language that netanyahu used, especially right before we came to him, is very significant. he said: no war is more righteous or just. you can translate it both ways -- than this. and that was a message for the families of those soldiers who have been killed. he said that we all stand united. we will finish the goal that your sons started, speaking to the parents of those killed and that end of that sentence was, it will be more difficult days to come. so clearly, netanyahu indicated to everyone this will could not. >> all right. al jazeera, nick schifrin who has been on the scene since the beginning right there for us live in gaza. nick, thanks for being with us. thank you for watching "al jazeera america." coming to you live from new york. i am morgan radford. make sure you follow us online
