1:01 pm
>> well, the cease fire in gaza is holding at least for now. you are looking at live pictures from gaza at this moment and the 12 hour truce just ended but now it is extended for four more mores. john kerry and world leaders are in paris and working on a longer deal and while they talk the residents are returning to homes and looking for survivors and burying their dead. a hundred bodies were found today and the palestinians killed is above a thousand. we have nick joining us live from gaza and how is it looking now that the cease fire ended and are they worried that the bombs will start again? >> the cease fire is extended for four hours and the confidence that we are seeing
1:02 pm
the first time in a long time and allowing the people to return to homes and coming out from hiding, whether in u.n. schools turned shelter or private homes, all of the people are pouring into the neighbor hooteds that with no-go areas simply too dangerous to go and they are hoping that the cease fire will be extended. going into the neighborhoods, two or three miles to the east, not far from here, and you sense and see the level of devastation. some of the blocks are completely destroyed. some five, six, seven hundred feed of buildings are flattened. it is looking like apock lip tick and the people are sifting through the rubble of the homes, and looking for the dead. one man was looking for cash, money, jewelry, anything he
1:03 pm
could sell to keep living. you see the destruction and smell the destruction and smell of the war and the blood that is staining the streets and seeing how devastated that the communities are. >> you talk about the nature of the scene and this smell of blood, we want to look for solutions, what do you think that sek tir kerry is hoping to achieve? >> that is a good question, he's working and the aides are working on trying to convince hamas to accept a cease fire deal and assure hamas that a deal will include what it wants the opening of the border crossing and lifting of the siege and the frustration is now with the israeli government. it was the iz idz cabinet last night that rejected john kerry's
1:04 pm
proposal and one said look we can't even officially propose it and they have rejected it. and so a lot of frusation last night and today from kerry's staff on what happened. the israelis are continuing to continue attack the tunnels going from gaza to israel the fighters are using to sneak into the communities and they are using drugs and trying to kidnap the soldiers and residents and bring them to gaza and they are going to continue after the tunnels and with the permanent cease fire they are reluctant according to the u.s. officials to sign a deal without the assurances of going after the tunnels. >> nick, briefly, going back to something, the frustration with the israeli cabinet, so who do
1:05 pm
they have faith in and who is part of the summit in paris and who are they putting their faith in? >> well, it is less about faith, of course, more about diplomacy. this is something that the u.s. officials are used to, middle east diplomacy and intermediaries with hamas and through egypt or done in part in cairo, and the relationship between secretary of state john kerry and netanyahu is a good one according to the officials on both sides and they are continuing to talk regularly. but ultimately this is something that the u.s. has to do with turkey and convince both sides, convince hamas, assure hamas a cease fire is including what they need and assuring israel they are getting the time and the space to get done what they want to do and namely the
1:06 pm
tunnels and the israeli officials are saying they need more time and seeing the resince tense to have a cease fire right now. >> we are continuing to watch, thank you, nick. >> and as mentioned the palestinians in gaza using the cease fire to go through the buildings and this is the first chance to recover their dead. >> this means little, it means nothing to those that lost everything. we are in the area to the north and they are actually pulling a body out of the rubbles. that is the sound of absolute grief as they are pulling people out of the houses here.
1:07 pm
we are told that before this cease fire took place, israeli war planes hitting this area and hitting it extremely hard. there are areas of complete devastation. they are continuing to look for the bodies. we met a lady on the side of the road and she said this has happened throughout my lifetime and when is this going to stop? >> pro demonstrators protest in a number of the cities across europe today one of the largest being held in london. ten thousand people rallied outside of the israeli embassy. in paris hundreds are prote protesting. more demonstrations are scheduled this afternoon. >> and in libya, violence led the u.s. state department to shutdown its embassy in tripoli.

1:09 pm
libya. most of the staffers will be returning to washington to don't their work and a few of the personnel going to other embassies in the region, in terms of practical impact while the embassy is not officially closed, basically if you are a libyan and wants a visa or engaging with the u.s. government you have nowhere to go for the time being. the safety situation in libya is simply precarious and it is hard to bring it to heal and it is going to what it can do to assist the libyan government but no diplomats there from the u.s. to assist for now. >> all right, thank you so much. >> the u.s. is saying that russia is sending more military
