looking for a longer lasting truce and the officials are there. and there are protesting around the around against israel's assaults and there are rallies. >> we are going to gaza first and we have a report. >> parts of the neighborhood are in ruins. there's not much for the people to salvage here. but they still try. tired men, covered in dirt and full of depair. a family with a house and a small shop, this is all they have left now. they have no faith in cease fires. >> what will we 'sooef with a cease fire without conditions? they'll come again and destroy the houses.
2:03 pm
they don't respect what is agreed upon. >> there are few words to describe what happened here. this entire neighborhood is being destroyed. and beneath the rubble are the home and lives of countless palestinians. once the cease fire started, the people walked home. it was a chance to take whatever is left. m mattress mattresses, and clothes and some pushed the cars out. they don't know when they'll be back. >> i came to my house to see what happened to it. we are not here to take anything. we just took clothes when we left. >> this man has lost his home. but he's relieved he has all his family. >> all my family because of the shelling they got out and escaped but terrified and

2:05 pm
we are holding the palestinian authority to its objectives. we are in solid darety with them. >> all right, live now to james, who is in the area there, and calling for a prolonged lull in fighting and extense of the cease fire is a positive? >> it is positive news. we have had meetings going on, diplomatic meetings are going on in paris and all that has come out of it is a 12 hour cease fire, three mortars have been fired from gaza into southernize real and for now that is an only breach of the cease fire. this is good news for the people of gaza, it is not what john
2:06 pm
kerry wanted. he wanted a much longer cease fire, seven days, and the start of substantial negotiations about the under lining issues and another person that wants that is the u.n. secretary moon, and he's put out a statement saying that he any peace effort not tackling the root causes is setting the stage for the next cycle of violence. >> right, so of course, i mean, talking about not addressing the root causes, of course neither the israeli or hamas is at the talks and what happens to getting them to agree some sort of a truce? >> well, there will be a lot of diplomatic efforts going. the key thing to watch in the coming few minutes in a half hour's time is the israeli security cabinet meeting and they are going to discuss with three hours left to go on the
2:07 pm
extended cease fire whether it should be extended. one of the prominent members, one of the hard liners, has told israeli television what is the point of extending the cease fire. it is a cease fire for the sake of a cease fire and there are those in the military and in the political leadership that believe there is more work to be done and they have to destroy the tunnels and stop the rockets from being fired and it is unclear beyond mid night israel will extend the cease fire and what hamas will do either. this could be the last few hours of a cease fire or another extension and the u.n. coordinate for the peace process is asking for 24 hour cease fire to take place from mid night tonight and we'll see how those calls are answered from both of the sides. >> thank you, james, live.
2:08 pm
we are going to stephanie in gaza and we heard james talking the possibility of a cease fire being extended beyond mid night local time and the temporary truce allowing the people to get out and about today and you were among them and what did you see? >> well, there were horrific scenes, and neighborhoods are levelled and the homes turned into pipes of rubble, bodies being pulled out. we witnessed a man, they had to dig quite deep under neath his home to actually get him out. his brother collapsed into fits of grief and put into an ambulance because of having spasms and this is just one of the thousands of stories. some of the teams going to the southern border that was pounded with the ar till yar and the

cease fire bringing no relief in the sense of people able to return to home, many having no homes to return to, one man said i spent a hundred thousand dollars to build my house and i have nothing left and how can i build it again because the construction materials are banned from coming into the gaza and because of the seize. so it is devastating day, i have to tell you. a lot of emotion. 150 bodies are pulled from the rubble. there are areas that the ambulances can't reach, especially to the east and in the central gaza strip. a relief people because the bombardment has stopped but certainly not bringing them any sort of lessening of the suffering here. >> stefanie thank you for updating on the situation there on the ground. the cease is extended.
2:10 pm
we'll keep you up to date on the latest. >> ten palestinians killed in the okay pied west bank. two palestinians were buried after being killed on saturday. they were involved in the widespread protests. eight people were killed overnight. >> protests in cities around the world against the gaza offensive. they are showing the solidarity with the palestinians. >> the decision led to a number of people ignoring it, a few rocks and tear gas followed shifting the focus away from the palestinian cause. hamas flags. in london, the mood against israel is angry and better

organized. for the second saturday in a row they came by the thousands to the embassy and hidden behind the security in the wealthest part of london. some never been on a demonstration before. they had sympathy for gaza and the right of palestinians to shoot the rockets at israel. >> if that was happening to me and someone took my house, it is a government [inaudible] >> in your view the hamas rockets are legitimate to a degree? >> israel claims that many of the people are antise mattic. >> speakers condemned the settlement extension and protests against that are not
2:12 pm
bringing out as many people. there is a struggle between the israeli army and hamas in gaza with all of the civilian casualties that is capturing the anger. we are hearing over and over again, the key israeli government is that israel is defending itself against gaza. protests ended at the parliament and about aing cue weighses of the government being biassed against israel. the protestor however say support for the palestinian cause is growing by the week. >> well, with me in the studio is political analyst, we heard james quoting the israeli foreign minister and saying a cease fire for the cease fire sake, whether this lull in the fighting lead to any change in the conflict?
2:13 pm
>> it must otherwise it will not hold. it is becoming a simple as that. it seems that the palestinians and the israelis have spent a huge capital, political capital in this war. this is usually the case for the palestinians and this time around israel is paying a heavy price. even if tactually it won against the palestinians, but the fact that hamas is holding the fort for three weeks and killing so many is maintaining the rocket launching, all of that put israel in a bad position. so now israel and hamas and palestinians have to make sure that the cease fire is going to hold. neither of them, especially the palestinians, cannot afford to have israel like it did this time violate the last cease fire
2:14 pm
on false presences. >> how do you get the two sides talking if not to each other through the mediators? >> it actually was instructive to secretary of state kerry with the foreign minister and turkish foreign minister, this is exactly what the israeli dit not want. they didn't want them getting a more prominent position in the cease fire negotiations because they want the palestinian voice to be heard as much. alas the united states understands that has to come the bear and the initiatives behind us, you have to have one of the party or carrying the documenteds, the turkish are well represented in the talks. >> sure, but the regional appetite and the world wild anger, it is wearing thin, isn't
2:15 pm
it, the people around the world israel not used to being on the side of venting the anger. >> that is true. on the other hand, it seems the political elites in europe and united states remain behind israel, in fact, some sof of those present in paris defended israel's right to protect their yosemi citizens and leading to the death of a thousand palestinians and mostly innocent people. as it remains strong in the u.s. backing, all though it has become more of a burden than an asset to the obama administration. it is overspending its political capital and overreaching and yes it is becoming to lose. the golden rule in this situation as follows, when the powerful fights weaker every

2:20 pm
>> joining me from ukraine capital kiev. mr. hunter, thank you for joining us. the eu considering the toughest sanctions yet against russia. >> well, what we have by president putin and the allies they are more afraid of the banks than they are of the tanks, so i think what is on the agenda at the moment it is a third tier of sanctions targeting sectors and the financial sectors, closing the capital markets to the russian banks, oil and gas, and also the defense, not allowing russia to sell or buy arms.
2:21 pm
i think also other sectors for example the diamonds and caviar and they are really sectors that should be targeted now because they have invaded a sovereign state and integrity and now with the horrendous incident last week with the kremlin backed rebels shooting down a passenger liner, the question is where does putin go next and what can be done to stop him? >> do you think the sanctions will hit the people, the desired people, the top tier people at the top or cripple the russian economy and there by hitting the ordinary russians in the process? >> in terms of targeting it is important to target the individuals and the industries that are backing putin. i think also part of the
2:22 pm
sanctions visa bans can be effective method to target the individuals. because at the moment, you know, if putin is not stopped at this stage, the question the where does he go from here? the mood in kiev is of shock. the internarnl community here having a large march against terrorism tomorrow morning here in the central kiev, and there is a fear. russian troops are on the border of ukraine and can invade any day or any hour and the sanctions are the number one thing to be used to stop putin invading further. >> if the sanctions fail, what are options are available to the community to stop the conflict? >> well, the next stage is then
2:23 pm
some sort of a military assistance or military intervention. i think at the moment we are hearing that washington is actually considering, at the moment support of nonlethal weapons, but the question is russia, we know that russia is sending in the military equipment that brought down the liner, they are bringing in arms and troops, so if russia is bringing in the troops to ukraine, wie the west has the right and the possibility the obligations to do so also. when ukraine became inspect 1991, the third largest arsenals. now it is really for the west to keep those assurances and aassist ukraine, which is being
2:24 pm
invaded by russia, so i think, you know, after sanctions, if we see the sanctions are not working, military assistance from the west is something that should be on the agenda. >> okay, thank you for joining us live from kiev the director of the ukraine institute. >> thank you. >> now, 53 migrants from africa are rescued off of sicily and they were spotted in dingy. 85,000 migrants have been picked up of the coast of italy. they are asking for help in rescuing and homing the migrants. >> the situation in libya is worsening and the u.s. embassy is being evacuated. 47 people have been killed since the fighting broke out two weeks ago in tripoli.
2:25 pm
the u.s. and turkey say that the suspension of the diplomatic operations is temporary. >> the united states together with other countries one of them turkey have decided that because of the free wheeling violence taking place in tripoli, particularly around our embassy, but not on the embassy, it is presenting a real risk to personnel and we are suspending our current diplomatic activities at the embassy and we have moved the people on ground to tu nearby ya and disbursed to other places. >> john kerry speaking there.
2:26 pm
we have more from washington, d.c. >> the u.s. government is saying it is suspendel operations at the u.s. embassy in tripoli and all the staff is evacuated. it took a 5 hour drive over night to get the u.s. personnel out of libya. the evacuation is simple, the security situation deteriorated so much that fighting between various partisan groups in tripoli has come to the doorstep of the embassy and in light of the killing the u.s. ambassador and three other americans september 11th #, 2012, the obama administration decided to evacuate the personnel rather than have them in harm's way. this impacts the libyans wanting to do business with the u.s. government, the u.s. citizens

2:34 pm
fighting. >> our position we want a clear position that says a cease fire including the lifting the siege. if that happened, no means we are going to have a cease fire. the one thing that is stopping the cease, the israelis are attacking the palestinians. they have to stop the attacks. that and making an end for this. it is clear that doing the both things to together. this is the clear which we are asking for. they have to say clearly we are ready to stop our relation, our attacks against gaza, by lifting the cease and militant by stopping the bombings. we are not talking about conditions or preconditions, the facts on the grounds.
2:35 pm
>> okay, spokesperson for hamas. there are sirens going off a there now. can you confirm that we are clear does the cease fire still stand as of now? >> as of now, the cease fire stands on an uni lateral basis, israel is extending it for four hours and hamas is rejecting that. three minutes after the 12 hours of the pause ended, the first set of sirens rang off in israel and signalling a renewal of the attacks. we are holding off at least until mid night. the israeli security cabinet is meeting right now, actually, and will make a decision on where they are going from here. >> so we are clear as far as
2:36 pm
israel is concerned they are adhering to the cease fire. the cease fire today revealed to the world a the devastation and the destruction that the israeli forces unleashed on the people of gaza, a thousand palestinians have now been killed and we have been seen them pulling the bodies out of the wreckage and now seeing this as a massacre? >> i think that what the humanitarian pause reveal second degree the extept of the distas tars on both sides by hamas. we didn't want to be in the conflict. >> the mortar shells that are fired from the side of gaza is nothing to one hundred one ton bombs destroying the neighborhoods and killing the men, women and children that are
2:37 pm
innocent. >> but the comparison is irrelevant. >> the relevant, the compassion is relevant if you are living in gaza. >> well, if i may, i mean, your own sister program just in the last hour has been broadcasting a program praising the he is tan si and the care that the israeli military is taking the in gaza. we don't all of the details there and who the is killed by israeli fire and who is killed by hamas fire and we know there are serious combat going on below the ground and above the ground between the organizations there, and in a determined effort by us to end the threat to israel. in the course of this combat, the people of gaza have been put
2:38 pm
in the cross fire by hamas. >> we have seen pictures on the screens right now of the neighborhood in gaza, this is devastation that is leaked be i the israeli forces, this is not coverage by hamas. >> much of it by the israeli forces, much it by the israeli forces, 150 cases where hamas forces landed in gaza. we know from the combat area a lot of people killed by israeli and hamas fire and don't forget that some 200 missiles were fired after the cease fire and a number of the terror tunnels are located there, this is an an area well known for a long time and for three or four days prior to going in, we almost begged
2:39 pm
the population there to move out and told them the neighborhoods to go to where they would be safe. >> most of gaza is unsafe. where would you like the people to go, they are bombed out of their homes and neighborhoods and seeking rerefugee in the shelters and you have also attacked and are you going to lift the border crossings to allow them to get out? >> two questions there, where should they go very specific messages have been passed and in most cases the civilian population is paying attention to the neighborhoods and when and going to be targeted and which to move to. the second half of that that you are talking lifting the siege, be honest, with the exception of the naval block aid and ruled legal by the united nations
2:40 pm
there is not a siege on gaza. there are limitations on the export. >> we are hearing in the reports there are bans with the imports like construction materials and they are vital in rebuilding the communities and fishing boats are not able to get to sea and getting income without being fired on by the israeli military. >> to be fair, to be fair, no, no, it is not disingenuous. it is true. they have invested over $1.2 billion in building materials in the building of the terror tunnels. there is no restriction on the building materials. what there has been is a diversion of the use of the building materials above ground to below ground to civilian use to terror use aj.
2:41 pm
there are limiting restrictions on the imports, jewel use material and we have just learned at a huge price, at how perhaps we should have had more restrictions on what is going on there. hamas has abused the population of gaza in a shameful way and judged in history by their poor behavior. >> okay, thank you for joining us. the deputy spokesperson for israel's ministry. >> we are hearing that hamas is rejebting a cease fire extense because of seeing no evidence of aid entering the gaza strip. >> religious groups in the uk are coming together to protest.
