big questioning about the scottish referendum - is there enough oil here to fuel the nationalist's dream, and what happens when it all runs out. >> representatives from around 30 countries are meeting in paris to debate how to combat islamic state. the united states is trying to build an international coalition to defeat the group in iraq and in syria. let's go straight to paris and speak to nadeem basha. francis hollande is co-chairing the conference. do we know the french commitment to the coalition at this point? >> it's becoming clearer. francis hollande is co-hosting the conference with the iraqi president whom he met in baghdad on friday. this comes as the french defence minister announced that french planes are taking part in

reconnaissance flights in the iraqi air space, helping the u.s. with air strikes, against a group calling itself the islamic state. clearly francis hollande wants to be seen to be a lead nation backing up the u.s. in the fight against the i.s. group. francis hollande has said, clearly, that france is prepared to take parts in air strikes if called upon. it's worried about the repercussions here in france itself, as my colleague jacky rowland reports. >> reporter: a french navy fridayingate crossing the -- fridayingate crossing the mediterranean. france includes an aircraft carrier, making it an important partner in any operation against the islamic state group. francis hollande was in paris,

in conference is a brief af, a few hours. what do they -- affair, a few hours. what do they hope to achieve? >> it's a broad representation of foreign ministers meeting at the foreign ministry that you see behind me. you see the red carpet, where they started arriving. many of the arab states, some of whom, according to john kerry, have said they would take part in air strikes, they are represented. turkey is represented, along with many european countries. some of whom are also saying they'd take part in air strikes. perhaps britain, germany ruled it out. france prepared do so. obviously they are hoping to get more and more countries on board, if not to take part informant air strikes, then like the french are doing, taking part in the background operations, gathering intelligence and so on. john kerry, the secretary of state says he will not release

care. they've had enough. it was a good night for the democrats, trying to go mainstream, campaigning for a cut. they doubled their vote and will be the third largest party although none of the main parties will work with them. the possibility of higher taxes to pay for it. at the same time, a surprising number voted for a radical party that wants to end sweden's reputation as a save haven for escaping war and persecution. a boat carrying 250 african migrants has sunk in the mediterranean sea, singing off the coast. 26 people have been rescued but a libyan navy spokesman fears others have drowned. reporting from tripoli. libya and italy are blaming each other for the tragedy.

seats to form a majority government. so let's look at the countries that have agreed to join the u.s.-led coalition against the islamic state or i.s.i.l. we have egypt, jordan, lebanon and iraq, plus several gulf countries involved - kuwait, bahrain, qatar, u.a.e., imam, saudi arabia, britain, denmark, france, they represent the contingent, and others include canada and australia - which is the only nation to give details of its contribution. it's sending 600 personnel and 10 aircraft. it is unclear what many role the coalition will play. douglas ol fant is based in washington and says the paris conference must be more than a show of flags. >> the strategy, while it's working is evolving, and the role that each country plays may have to be fleshed out.

the most important piece of this is getting the ground forces in iraq, the bulk of which will be provided by the iraqi army. given the government just formed and they don't have a minister for defence, it may be weeks before that moves forward, and therefore there's more time to sort out what is being contributed. it's unlikely that any of the countries are providing ground troops. the bulk of the troops will have to be provided by the countries in question. mostly by iraq. the most important piece of all this is the intelligence and diplomatic support. i.s.i.s. needs to be isolated financially, in terms of supporters, and isolated in terms of ideology, it will help the europeans provide help and

all those that make up the iraqi people. thus ensuring its unity and sovereignty. that was an indispensable condition in order to re-establish trust, confidence, and to bring people together. but unity is also necessary internationally. the security council, in its resolution, 2270 declared that it is a huge danger for the security of the world, dash is a huge danger, and the battle carried out by the iraqis against the terrorist is our battle. we must commit ourselves together. that is the purpose of the conference alongside the iraqi authorities, clearly, faithfully and with strength. we can't waste time. this aid must be humanitarian

punish those responsible. the response to the terrorist threat is political. and the international community needs to find a lasting solution where this movement arose in syria, and i would recall that for three years now, the crisis in syria has caused 200,000 deaths. and this plays into the hands of the terrorist, this chaos plays into the hands. and we need negotiations to preserve the future of syria and we need the support of democratic forces. we need to support them by every means, and france is playing its part with regional partners who have understood what is at stake

in syria. finally, i want to, on the occasion of this conference, call attention to the urgent need to preserve the unity and sovereignty of lebanon, because lebanon has window 2 million refugees, together with saudi arabia. france decided it can support the lebanese army, in supplying equipment in order to ensure the security and unity of lebanon. and i know that the secretary-general of the united nations, the lebanese support group is coordinating international aid to that country. i'm thinking of jordan, which also needs to enjoy the support of the international community. so this is the agenda for this

conference. it reflects the solidarity which we must show to iraq, political support, the new authorities and government there, coming together and reconciliation. humanitarian aid to ensure protection and assistance to the civilian population and refugees, and the fight against d.a.s.h., the terrorist movement which spares no effort in its actions. and in holding this conference, the countries meeting here today give an indication of solidarity towards iraq, and i thank them for that. but they also express their common will to protect themselves against terrorism and act accordingly, and that is why i thank you all for coming here
