eruption of a volcano. more than 30 people are believed to have died. riot police have fired at proceedtestors, the protests, they claim are illegal. rob mcbride has been watching the protests unfold. as more reinforcements arrived, tests clear they were out numbered by demonstrators. a crush of people trying to find their way into the occupation site blocked. tempers flared and everyone knew what was coming. you remember bel as went up to block the pepper spray and the pushing started. the umbrella made, apart and then the spray. officers down and hurt both

sides are feeling for restraint. the crowd had moved on. and so had events. from across the highway, more protesters saw the moment. racing across the lanes and urging others on this side to do the same. they met in the middle. the occupation just got bigger. to contain at a time occupation in a certain area. it found now ended up, going to taking over the whole center of the city. >> now, it was the protesters in charge of the traffic, but this was arguable in charge of this city's fate. it's a new day for hong kong. civil disobedience, unprecedented. today, we did something that we are proud of, yeah. the hong kong authorities this day started as a crisis. at the end of it, it still was.

now, one for beijing as well. rob mcbride, al jazeera, hong kong another correspondent there with the people in hong kong is scott heidler. >> well into the night, still tens of thousands of protesters here in the center part of hong kong much this evolved on sunday. it started early in the day. pepper spray was used, a lot of the protesters used umbrellas to repel that and gas masks and protective wear on their eyes. >> continued throughout but something in the late afternoon, we saw for the very first time, the use of tear gas by the police. now, it started first in this area where we are here and pushed protesters down that channel and a lot more came back. around that time very interesting, the father of the democratic movement here in hong kong came and spoke to te protestods before tear gas was

fired. >> when you say you are winning, what do you mean? >> trying to block them, they are calm and peaceful. we have been saying this is a movement of peace and love. . >> then in the early evening, something we hadn't seen before. in most cases, you saw the complication of the protesters being pushed back with tear gas or pepper spray but these bridges here in the central part again of hong kong, we saw something that was very interesting. a lot of the protesters had sat down right in the middle of this walkway and the police with riot gear were coming up, coming up. there was a bit of a stand-off what we had seen around this area where the government complex is, the police unif you recalled this sign that said: police line. do not cross. when that happened a confrontation ended with police backing down. they walked back to the bridgeway. what will be interesting in the coming hours, big financial

to us. what exactly are you accusing m mahmoud abbas of? >> when you have victims of war crimes, they really have a right to see justice done. a soldier who stole a credit card who got a few months in prison. basically, there is total impunity. the situation -- >> could you explain, first of all, could you explain how much leeway does mr. abbas have in terms of registering with the icc? the icc obviously is signed up to, by states, by full ly fledged states, acknowledged at states. the status of palestine is rather obscure. isn't it? >> at this point, abbas clearly does have the power to sign up.

>> that's been the state of play since the u.n. general assembly recognized palestine as an observer state. so there is no question that he legally could sign up. instead, he has been using the icc, basicallies a fwharning chip saying if the security council doesn't impose the peace, i will sign up or if this doesn't happen, i will sign up. it shouldn't be a beargaining chip. we recognize abbas is under an enormous pressure from the united states, from his european donors, who are threatening to cut off funds if palestine goes forward and embraces the international criminal court. >>, frankly is completely unjustified contact. we have been very -- conduct. we have been very critical of the united states in the western european groups for putting that kind of pressure on ab bats. at the same time, we have been critical of abbas for allowing it to be a political football rather than saying this is a basic right of the people of both israel and palestine and it's going to proceed with it.
