at the same time the chief executive made that statement and trying to encourage the protesters to leave the streets, in fact, the opposite took place. as you can see it's just packed here now for the last several hours, 3-4 hours, protesters have been flooding in to this area. this is an area that saw some tear gas overnight sunday to monday and some people slept overnight but it was sparse then in the early morning hours and now it's just packed. you see a lot of people wearing black, that is because a social media message went out through channels last night, sunday night into hours monday to wear black for the cause and obviously that has worked and people have come out in mass numbers and a lot of them are still students and there are university flags out here and the occupy central movement have embraced this and part of this and saying this is the first victory and the first stage is a victory for their movement. now again it's going to be very interesting to see what happens

over the coming hours and saw this many people the street last night and turned violent and tear gas fired and so far, early morning hours you saw some police tactical unit officers with guns that fired these tear gas rounds. they are no longer in site and have retreated or pushed back a little bit and not too many police here, all you see are predominant people wearing black supporting the cause. >> over the weekend the leader of hong kong said he will hold new constitutions on electoral reform. has there been any other reaction from the government? >> no, other than them saying that the protesters need to leave the streets peacefully, saying that it is blocking normal business from being taken out and also a safety and security concern but he has not said anything more for the demands and one of the main demands of the protesters is that he now resigns and has not

said anything along those lines and pretty much kept the line that he had over the weekend and that is constitutions for these elections will continue but it must be said these consultations and this process going on is not a backing down by the government because of what the protesters want, it started several weeks ago and no back down and no mention of these demands that protesters have by the government here in hong kong. >> scott, thank you. viktor is director of the beijing china international studies and says the protests are counter productive. >> when they went to china hong kong was in the system and people in hong kong enjoy democracy and have the right to protest and demonstrate therefore i think the current demonstrations are more or less a reflection democracy does exist in hong kong. around i would urge people in hong kong or do such

overcome the challenges that lay ahead for the new president? >> i think so. well, today was a very important test for both of these individuals, both of these leaders tried to make sure that they agree on most of the agenda for the way forward and that was very much clear today both in the sense that people who participated in this inauguration felt the sense of unity and felt proud to be witness of what has happened for the first time in a very long and brutal history of this country. actually when you could look to the messages from both of the leaders, from president ghani and dr. abdoullah, the check executive both of them were confirming and affirming the commitment to the political deal they have signed but also to

cooperation. it's going to be a difficult path ahead. it's not going to be a very smooth way forward and anybody who can expect a smooth way forward may not have enough understanding of political developments of this country and other developing countries, but both of these individuals -- >> you say there are challenges ahead, what are those immediate challenges? the economy is in dire straits and let's talk about some of those challenges. >> reporter: the country has gone through a difficult time because of the elections and uncertainties surrounding the political development and political transition and economy as you say is in a difficult and challenging situation. security is a major issue still and these two individuals do have a huge task on their shoulders. but the first thing for both of them to operate in a very smooth environment and to make sure that they are focused on their

plans to implement them is building trust and confidence among each other. i think todd was -- today was the beginning of it and president ghani and what mr mr. abdoullah suggested yesterday and allowed it to happen today and it's beginning of cooperation. challenges, the first thing they need to sign the by lateral security agreement which is expected tomorrow to happen. >> this is a final question about the taliban, they described this deal, this unity deal as a u.s.-orchestrated sham, so where does this leave the taliban in terms of their inclusion and mission from the emerging political landscape in the country? >> reporter: well, at this stage it seems very much taking participation of people and both of the election and the very

in mexico left thousands of families without access to clean water and they describe last month's incidents as one of the worst environmental disasters in history and we have this report from the city of benameechi. >> reporter: minors on strike for the last search years protesting they say against unsafe working condition and poor safety measures at mexico's largest copper mine, a toxic spill weeks ago poured tens of thousands of sulphoric acid in the river. >> there are consequences and know of several accidents and this spill is a direct result. >> reporter: police continue to garden the copper mine and they relied on it for drinking water and to irrigate their crops and are distributing tanks to be

filled with water trucked in daily from different parts of the state and it's estimated that some 22000 people in the region were effected by the toxic spill and their immediate needs are being addressed but there is still little word on what a long-term solution might be to contamination of one of the most important rivers. the cost to the local economy could surpass $150 million. local mayors say the economic issue needs to be addressed soon. >> translator: we need to generate new jobs. we always depended on the river 100%, if the river is effected our entire livelihood is effected. >> reporter: the company that owns the mine, group of mexico, set up $150 million trust fund for operations to area residents and set up a slick website to provide efforts to cleanup the mess. few residents of the river valley received any money yet or
