sold to landlords for little to no money. i lived in a big family. there were 24 of us. i told my father how hard my life was as a kamlari but he insisted that i had to go back and work. i was so hurt. my parents did not seem to understand or care. they were declared free in the year 2000. but kamlaris are still kept by nepal's elite - including government officials and decision makers >> these people have the connections. if a case is filed against them they are able to bend judgments to their favor. they are able to threaten poor families. they are the ones with land and if they do not get kamlaris, they could give the land to someone else to farm.

>> but today some are fighting back against nepal's feudal traditions. >> i'm subina shrestha. on this edition of 101 east we ask, if nepal's slave girls will ever be free. june 2013 - former kamlaris from all over nepal are protesting outside the government complex in kathmandu. just weeks before, 12 year old kamlari girl srijana chaudhary had burnt to death under mysterious circumstances at her owners house here in the city. outraged, these women, who have all worked in servitude, are demanding a full inquiry into srijana's death and an end to slavery once and for all. it was a lonely battle for them.

political parties, human rights groups, child rights groups, all stayed away from the protest. when the women try to enter the government buildings, police react with brutality. to find out more about srijana's case, we travel 450km west to the home where srijana grew up in the terai region >> i keep thinking of my daughter. i even see her in my dreams. the last time she came to my dream she wanted her sister - her sister samjhana.

she kept saying, 'my mother, send my sister to me. srijana, like all kamlaris, was from the indigenous tharu community. their history of subordination began 160 years ago with nepal's first social order ranking tharus almost bottom of the caste system, just above the untouchables. their land was taken away from them. and they became bonded labour on the land that once was theirs. srijana's parents rely on the goodwill of their landlord for access to land. and must give up half the produce they grow. they also gave up their daughter. >> we did not want to send srijana. but the landlady came to us and said that i should send my daughter to kathmandu. she said that my daughter would become clever in the city.

she said that srijana would go to school. i told her that we did not want to send her. but the landlady would keep coming back and asking for her. srijana left home at the tender age of ten. two years later, srijana's father got a call from the back. former president hosni mubarak after a verdict in his retrial suspended for two months. relatives of protesters who died in the egyptian up rising three years ago from infuriated by the judge's decision that he needs more time to consider his ruling. >> the man who led egypt for three decades expected a verdict on saturday in a case that implement kateed him in the death of peaceful protesters during the 2011 revolution, abuse of power and profiteering. but the verdict has been postponed. >> the court has decided to

you are responsible for. and these are the real war crimes you should have investigated or spoken out against from this podium last week. [applause] ladies and gentlemen, as israel's children huddle in bomb shelters and israel's iron dome missile defense knocked hamas rockets out of the sky, the profound moral difference between israel and hamas couldn't have been clearer. israel was using its missiles to protect its children. hamas was using its children to protect its missiles. [applause] >> by investigating israel rather than hamas for war crimes, the u.n. human rights council has betrayed its noble mission to protect the innocent. in fact what it's doing is to

turn the laws of war upside down. israel which took unprecedented steps to middl minimize civilian casualties. hamas is given a pass. thus sending a clear message to terrorists everywhere. use civilians as a human shield. use them again and again and again. and you know why? because sadly, it works! by granting international legitimacy to the use of human shields, the u.n. human rights council has thus become a terrorist rights council. and it will have repercussions. it probably already has. about the use of civilians as human shields. it's not just our interests.

it's not just our values that are under attack. it's your interests and your values. ladies and gentlemen, we live in a world steeped in tyranny and terror. why gays are handing from cranes in tehran. political prisoners are executed in gaza. young girls are abducted en masse in nigeria and hundreds of thousands are butchered in libya syria and iraq. yet nearly half, nearly halfful u.n. human rights resolutions focusing on a single country have been directed against israel, the one of true democracy in the middle east. israel where issues are openly debated in a boisterous parliament. where human rights are protected by independent courts. and where women, gays and minorities, live in a genuinely free society. the human rights that is an

oxymoron, the u.n. human rights council but i'll use it just the same. the council's bias treatment of israel is one manifestation. we hear mobs in europe call for the gassing of jews. we hear some national leaders compare israel to the nazis. this is not a function of israel's policies. it is a function of diseased minds. and that disease has a name. it's called antisemitism. it is now spreading in polite society where it masquerades as legitimate criticism of israel. for centuries, the jewish people have been demonized by blood,

today the jewish state is demonized by the apartheid label. and charged with genocide. in what university does the genocide include warning the civilian population to get out of harm's way or ensure they receive tons of humanitarian aid, even as rockets are aimed at us or setting up a field hospital to aid their wounded? i suppose it's the same moral university where a man who wrote a dissertation of lies about the holocaust and who insists on a palestine free of jews, could stand at this podium and shamelessly accuse israel of genocide and ethnic
