palestinians. the u.s. secretary of state condemned the violent, john kerry calling it an act of pure terror. let's take you now to west jerusalem where we've got these live pictures coming to you from west jerusalem, where funerals for the victims of the attacks are taking place currently. our correspondent told us that thousands expected to attend the if you know release. security across the city has been beefed up in light of the if you know release, as well as the rising tensions. let's get more from west jerusalem. we are getting reports of clashes in israel in the aftermath. we saw pictures of that before. tell us a little bit more about that. >> that's right, a very tense situation right across occupied

east jerusalem and west jerusalem as we were just seeing with those pictures at that funeral of those four israelis who were killed in an early morning attack at a synagog in west jerusalem. in occupied east jerusalem, we've already seen confrontations between palestinian youths, and israeli security forces, israeli security forces which have used stun grenades, tear gas canisters and the like against palestinian protestors, but of course, the background of all this and these picture at this funeral, not only a moment of sadness for many israelis, but one would imagine some anger, as well, whatever the case, it's been a very unpredictable and volatile day in west jerusalem and occupied territories. let's look at the day's events. >> more violence on the streets of jerusalem, this time in the city's west, a synagog in an

orthodox jewish neighborhood was the tarts. according to israeli police, two palestinians wielding guns and axes attacked worshipers during daily prayers. cousins belonged to the palestinian group known as the popular front for the liberation of palestinian. a statement from the group's armed wing welcomed the attack but stopped short of taking responsibility for or directly organizing it. police say they killed the two attackers. >> police who arrived in the scene shot and killed the two terrorists, and we have six people taken to hospital, four of them still in sir yes, sir to critical condition and heightened security is continuing now in jerusalem after this terrorist attack. >> the palestinian president condemned the attack. so has the u.s. secretary of state john kerry. >> our hearts go out to all israelis for the atrocity of this event and for all the reminders of history that come with it.

the right to pray within the walls at the site, something they cannot do as part of a long-standing agreement with jordan, which oversees religious shrines in occupied east jerusalem. >> in the rising tension and aftermath of the synagog attack, what's been the response from the palestinian leader, abbas? >> president abbas condemned the killings at this synagog in west jerusalem, however, he has also said that it's very clear that israel needs to end its occupation, draw ago very clear line between this attack, which according to israeli police was carried out by palestinian men, and the on going unrest we've seen not only in the unoccupied east of em, but also in the occupied west bank, as well. now the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu net has made

a very strong statement. he's gone on to say that the israeli government will use a heavy hand against those responsible for this, and he also singled out president abbas, accusing him of using language which has stoked this kind of unrest. whatever the case, we haven't seen an attack like this against a jewish holy silent or against jews in a holy site like this for many years. in fact, i think the last time we saw something like this was in 2008, when six or seven israeli jews were killed in a religious seminary. that resulted in the very angry reaction, not only from the israeli government, but also we saw a number of revenge attacks carried out by israelis against palestinians. that's no doubt a huge concern for the leaders in the palestinian territories. they have of course don't want to see more violence in these areas, but what's become very

clear is that the situation i guess spiraling out of control. we've been seeing violence now for several weeks, and again, here we are seeing it today, and not only are we seeing these scenes are grief on the streets of west jerusalem, we're also now seeing confrontations on the streets of occupied east jerusalem and indeed in occupied palestinian territories, as well. when given the context of all of this, the fact that we've seen violence, we've seen these one off attacks or individual attacks growing in frequency, the big question really is where is this all going to lead, how will the israelis respond, and more to the point, will we see further attacks from palestinians acting as individuals, as well, so more questions than answers, but again, a lot of sadness on the streets in west jerusalem and more confrontations in occupied palestinian territories.

isil captured the town and refinery north of baghdad in june. government forces are also fighting a crucial battle to stop isil fighters reaching the strategic town which is in anbar province. this is the last town before baghdad international airport. we have an exclusive report. >> isil fighters have mooney trapped this building with explosive devices in a bid to push back iraq's army. this is the only way of dealing with that threat. this is iraq's countryside leading to the south and to the west and baghdad. the army pushes further into the farm lands to fight isil and stop them from using it is land as cover. monday, iraq irforces took control of village in the area and this crucial bridge. >> we are standing here behind the bridge that links the town.
