militarily. it's easier do that than intervene in iraq or syria, and they have been given just cause. they'll face a problem with it. >> reporter: egypt's military has been running a campaign in the sinai peninsula since 2012. it's tackling the advance of i.s.i.l. on both sides. other nations are also concerned. i.s.i.l. made a direct threat to italy in its latest video. countries separated from libya by a narrow strip of the mediterranean closed the embassy there and is calling for u.n. intervention now, we have just got pictures coming in where the libyan air force commander said that planes participated in the strikes on the i.s.i.l. affiliated groups.
3:04 am
the libyan air force said they have cooperated with egypt on the strikes, and have asked for egyptian aid and help to continue with the strikes against these i.s.i.l. targets. now, france and united states condemned the killing of the 21 coptic christians calling it savage despicable and cowardly. let's get more on the issue. we are joined by ibrahim, the deputy director at the brookings, doha center. interesting here that we have got the libyan air force saying that they have asked the egyptians to help them target the i.s.i.l. affiliated groups. >> what do you make of that of. >> thank you. this is not surprising first of all. because the libyan air force has taken one side of the civil war that happened in libya for the past eight months now, since may of last year. and in the past this civil war
3:05 am
in libya has been supported by egypt and others. so this is not - is this is not a prize that they are working closely with egyptian government in order to target the group. so this makes it each more legitimate now, and that now is being done publicly. >> we are looking at the pictures of the strikes that have occurred just in the last few hours. these are recent pictures that came in. they looked devastating, these are the strikes that happened in durma province what is the possible implication here given that libya, itself is in its own political discord. now you have egypt coming in colluding with the libyan air force.
3:06 am
and then they are targets. what are the possible implications in libya? >> first of all, this is going to exacerbate the security offices in libya, and this is going to the civil war in libya, and is even more vicious. it is believed largely that egyptian government was taking part in supporting one party, in particularly general khalifa haftar's party against libya. who were treated as the islamist party of the civil war. egypt denied in the past it was involved. but they are acknowledging now that they are taking part and bombing a number of places in libya. it's interesting that the place where they bombed in the city of durna, which is one of the most vicious battle that is taking
3:07 am
place between general khalifa haftar, and south sharia and libya. >> one would be termed to perhaps say that this is convenient perhaps, for general khalifa haftar these strikes. >> that's why, thank you, this will exacerbate them. it's going to fuel actually the civil war in libya, which is going to be serious and significant help now for general khalifa haftar for one party over the other. the other party yesterday announced they are condemning the attacks. they wanted to make sure they are not treated on the same ground. they are different. they are a coalitionful different regional and strikal and islamist parties. so for now - i mean for general
3:08 am
khalifa haftar this will be a significant help in my view where now egypt is given a free hand or excuse. let me put to this way, for bombing a different country or intervening for the matters in libya. this is going to exacerbate the civil war in libya, and is going to make it worse. i think egypt will continue to do this for the coming years, actually. but on a ground of strike a strategy of how to deal with the overall civil war in libya. >> we'll have to leave it there. thank you very much for speaking with us. from the brookings, doha center. >> thank you. >> moving on it yemen, and an anti-coup leaders - they expressed disappointment at a disappointment on rebels to hand

3:10 am
they say it was week and doesn't have the word coup in it. it's something that is very disappointing as far as they are concerned. their main issue is that the u.n. resolution doesn't provide consequently action if the houthis don't relying wish power, and therefore they say it's nothing more than verbal condemnation of the power grab. add to this that men expressed negative sentiment to the u.s. to try to get all parties to be on a power sharing deal saying that they moved quickly because the only thing that has been consistent throughout the talks is the fact that the houthis are getting more and more powerful not only from a territorial perspective but a fire power point of view. on a security front, what is
